What's Trending in Games

Store-measured mobile game spending is contracting further: $19.6bn in Q3 2026 (-7% year on year) and $6.13bn in September (-7% month on month), and no 2026 launch has reached the global top-grossing chart. Newzoo and S&P Kagan see the wider market growing, so estimators disagree on direction. Honor of Kings leads monthly. Japan's trailing-year IAP is over $10bn (-5.1%); eFootball led January-July with Monster Strike second. Enforcement and litigation on minors and consumers now run from age checks and virtual-currency sales to ad delivery. D2C spend sits outside store statistics and protections. Gacha and casino-style spending carries addiction and inducement costs.

  1. 2026-09-25 August data (Sensor Tower: $6.57bn, -1% MoM) made August the latest complete month. In Japan eFootball led January-July with Monster Strike second, and 4X grew 9.4%, at odds with the global slowdown. Newzoo revised 2025 mobile upward, so estimators now disagree on direction. The proposed EU Kids Act may reach log-in rewards, and Supercell put mo.co back into beta.
  2. 2026-09-05 Global mobile IAP shrank in H1 2026 — about $40B, down 2% YoY, on 24B downloads, down 12% (Sensor Tower). The most recent published monthly ranking is July 2026 (the August table had not appeared as of Sept 5, 2026); AppMagic had Honor of Kings #1 at ~$157.6M (China's summer school break, +42% MoM), followed by Roblox ~$101.6M, Pokémon GO ~$101.1M (its best month since July 2021 on the franchise's 10th anniversary), Gossip Harbor ~$99.7M, PUBG MOBILE ~$99M, Royal Match ~$98.8M and Whiteout Survival ~$98.7M — ranks 2-7 compressed around $100M. Last War fell for a fourth straight month to ~$64.5M and 12th, with user acquisition almost switched off. In gacha, June's picture (Wuthering Waves overtaking all three HoYoverse titles) reversed in July as Genshin (~$56.0M, +68%), HSR (~$43.1M, +51%) and ZZZ (~$35.9M, +267%) reclaimed the top three — the monthly order turns on banner cadence. Roblox posted Q2 2026 revenue of $1.47B (+36%) but bookings up only 8%, at the low end of guidance, DAU down to 123M from 132M in Q1, falling per-hour monetisation among younger North American cohorts, and a ~27% share drop. Monster Strike has banked $11.4B lifetime but earned about a third of peak in 2024; in MIXI's Q1 FY2027 (April-June 2026, reported July 31) its MAU kept falling while IP collaborations lifted ARPU (both payer rate and ARPPU), so the Digital Entertainment segment grew 21.5% YoY to ¥19.5B and group revenue rose 50.3% to ¥47.07B. STRIKE WORLD (India soft-launch Feb 19, full launch Apr 16, UA scaled in June) still has no published performance figures. On the rules side, PEGI now defaults paid random items to 16+ for titles submitted from June 2026 and extends classification to limited-time offers (12), login-streak design (7-12) and unrestricted chat (18), so diversifying from gacha into passes and offers does not leave the classification perimeter; and on June 9, 2026 a Brazilian court ordered ten companies to pay ~$58.4M over loot boxes sold to minors. On billing, Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act (Apple complying via iOS 26.2) and the UK CMA's steering proposals give direct-to-consumer a legal tailwind — Playtika already earns ~$1B a year, about 30% of revenue, that way. Enforcement sits behind the route-opening: on July 23 the European Commission fined Google EUR890m (~$1.01bn) over steering restrictions and search self-preferencing, giving it 60 days to comply. H1 2026 global mobile IAP came to ~$40B, down 2% YoY, on 24B downloads, down 12%. In the latest complete month, July 2026, Honor of Kings stood apart at ~$157.6M while ranks 2-7 (Roblox, Pokémon GO, Gossip Harbor, PUBG MOBILE, Royal Match, Whiteout Survival) clustered near $100M and Last War fell for a fourth straight month. Roblox grew revenue 36% in Q2 but bookings only 8%. The gacha #1 reverses month to month (Wuthering Waves in June, HoYoverse's three titles back on top in July), and carries addiction, inducement and minor-protection concerns. Winning mechanics are 4X-survival (Whiteout/Last War/Kingshot), merge (Gossip Harbor) and extraction shooters (ARC Raiders) — but 4X has entered a deceleration phase while merge-2 grew 95% in H1 2026 and hybrid-casual sort/block puzzles surged.
  3. 2026-09-05 India layered the Online Gaming Rules 2026 and the OGAI onto its 2025 RMG ban, and on Aug 5, 2026 the Supreme Court accepted the PROGA challenges for final hearing, so validity remains undecided; alongside Australia's loot-box/casino rules these are redrawing the demand map. On the supply side EA's $55bn take-private closed Aug 4, 2026 with PIF at 93%, while on the ad side AppLovin grew Q2 revenue 53% yet missed guidance and fell 20%+, so the alternatives are not uniformly safe either. Chinese incumbents diverged from the global contraction — Tencent's Q2 2026 domestic games revenue was RMB47.3B (+17% YoY) and NetEase's online games RMB24.5B (+10%) — while consolidation of supply reached large firms too: Netflix closed two internal studios on Aug 13 and Rovio cancelled Sonic Blitz and closed its Copenhagen studio on Aug 25. The measurement base is moving as well: a Moloco study finds that of roughly 190,000 games released in 2025 only about 2,500 (1.3%) passed 500,000 downloads, and Sensor Tower reports that web shops now carry about 30% of the top-100 casino titles' revenue and roughly a third of Monopoly Go's, so store-side totals understate real spend (a separate estimate puts the D2C market as high as $17B). On billing, Google Play opened to third-party app stores in July 2026 and Apple published revised EU terms on Aug 18 that take effect Oct 1 — terms that also bar alternative payments and link-outs in apps for under-13s and require parental gating for under-18s. gamescom (Aug 26-30) drew 368,000 visitors with a record international share and sold out its expo floor for the first time, with Chinese publishers leading both booth spend and the new-title slate (NetEase's Ananta on Jan 15, 2027; HoYoverse's Petit Planet in winter 2026), and Loom Games' Pixel Flow took Game of the Year at the Pocket Gamer Mobile Games Awards on Aug 26. At the edge of the demand map, Carry1st and Newzoo put Africa at 406.25M gamers (+11.9%) on a market of just $1.98bn, about $5 per gamer a year, so Turkey alone ($1.65bn) out-earns the continent. On the supply side Meta's AI-generated games app Pocket spread from Brazil to the US in the same month Roblox barred reward-driven continuous feeds in its children's tiers. India's 2025 RMG ban and 2026 OGAI-supervised rules (the Supreme Court accepted the PROGA challenges for final hearing on Aug 5, 2026 and they remain undecided, while a separate May 2026 ruling upheld states' power to ban money gaming and retrospective 28% GST), Brazil's Digital ECA in force since March 2026, Australia's 2024 classification reform and rising odds-disclosure demands are starting to select which titles and tactics can rise.
  4. 2026-09-05 August and September 2026 moved both the measurement base and the regulatory perimeter. Sensor Tower estimates reported by the Financial Times show US App Store consumer spending down 6% year on year in Q2 2026, the first fall in a decade of tracking, with Apple US commission revenue down 18% over the year. Japan's trailing-twelve-month mobile IAP also shrank to about $10bn, down 5.1%, on 585 million downloads, down 5.4%. Banner timing does not explain gacha volatility on its own: after a backlash over a planned sixth romance option, Love and Deepspace fell to about $10.3M in July, down 68% month on month and a record low. On the rules side, the European Commission designated Roblox, Reddit and ChatGPT as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act on Sept 1, with compliance due in January 2027, and Australia’s eSafety Commissioner secured a court-enforceable child-safety undertaking from Roblox on Aug 20. In money-staked mobile games a US court ordered about $719M in disgorgement against Papaya Gaming, and on Aug 26 an Israeli court rejected its repayment plan. On the supply side buyers are consolidating running titles: Supercell signed to acquire Metacore, maker of Merge Mansion, and South Korea’s NC has spent about $300M on four studios. The party that sets the billing terms also changed hands on Sept 1, with John Ternus succeeding Tim Cook as Apple chief executive and Eddy Cue taking over the App Store from Phil Schiller. Japan's trailing-twelve-month mobile IAP has shrunk to about $10bn, down 5.1% YoY, and Monster Strike has $11.4B lifetime yet fell to ~$570M in 2024; US App Store consumer spending fell 6% in Q2 2026, its first decline in a decade of tracking. Banner cadence is not the only driver of monthly swings: after a backlash over an added romance option, Love and Deepspace fell 68% month on month in July to a record low. In August and September 2026 the European Commission designated Roblox a Very Large Online Platform under the Digital Services Act (compliance due January 2027), Australia’s eSafety Commissioner took a court-enforceable child-safety undertaking from Roblox, and a roughly $719M disgorgement order against Papaya Gaming was confirmed in money-staked mobile gaming.

So What? (Implications for MIXI)Group-wide implications are collected in Implications for MIXI →

  1. NOW

Monster Strike revenue concentration and MIXI's single-title dependence

Monster Strike has $11.4B lifetime yet earned just $570M in 2024 — about a third of peak — with 99% from Japan.[4] With revenue concentrated in a single title and single market, the maturing of that title and market translates directly into volatility for MIXI as a whole. Global mobile IAP also shrank 2% in H1 2026, so market growth is not available to absorb a mature title's decline (implication).[45]

  2. WATCH

Monster Strike Webshop spend is invisible to outside rankings and market totals

MIXI runs the Monster Strike Webshop and on Aug 6 added a bank payment option that grants extra points.[138] Webshop spend does not enter store totals,[79] so Monster Strike's second place in Japan[122] and Japan's 5.1% decline[107] describe in-store spend only. MIXI does not publish a split by route, so outside series cannot show whether a change reflects demand for Monster Strike or spend moving between routes (implication).

  3. WATCH

STRIKE WORLD entered an Indian market with many players and thin in-app spend

India is a market of about $5bn and 488 million players, yet in-app spend is only about $400M.[18] The real-money gaming ban removed about 86% of revenue, and total spend shrank.[16] STRIKE WORLD, fully launched in April, combines gacha with pass, ad and offer billing.[5][24] In this market gacha unit spend has little room to carry revenue. With no download, revenue or retention figures published, the outcome cannot be judged from outside (implication).

  4. WATCH

Redesigning a long-running title can draw backlash that metrics miss

MIXI names a UI/UX overhaul as its step to stop Monster Strike's MAU decline.[68] In this layer's cases, Clash Royale widened rewards to lighter players and improved its metrics, yet drew review bombing,[95] and Love and Deepspace spending fell 68% in a month after a backlash over a planned character.[109] For a long-running title, community reaction can move revenue apart from internal metrics, and the same question applies to the Monster Strike overhaul (implication).

  5. WATCH

Generative AI on the Monster Strike IP is judged directly by fans

MIXI put an AI-voice plan for a Monster Strike character on hold on Sept 24, while saying it had the voice actor's permission and audio recorded for the plan.[148] The objections centred less on permission than on the voice "being different from the real one" and on AI voices possibly reaching the game itself.[148] In a long-running title whose characters and voices carry fan attachment, the scope of generative AI use in Digital Entertainment is itself judged by the community and can act as a constraint separate from production efficiency (implication).

  6. WATCH

Monster Strike holds revenue on unit price in a shrinking Japan market

Japan's mobile IAP fell 5.1% over the trailing twelve months,[107] and eFootball led January-July with Monster Strike second.[122] In April-June, Monster Strike MAU fell while ARPU rose, and the Digital Entertainment segment grew 21.5%.[68] Segment growth thus rests on spend per user, not user count. The cited report does not say whether higher ARPU came from more users paying or more spend per payer, so whether unit spend holds while users decline is the point to watch (implication).

  7. WATCH

Japan's spending growth sits in 4X and sports, outside Monster Strike's genre

Japan's mobile IAP fell 5.1% over the trailing twelve months, yet in the same period 4X strategy, the top subgenre, grew 9.4% and realistic sports grew 8%.[122] So the rest of the market, without those two genres, fell by more than 5.1% (arithmetic implication). The January-July leaders were eFootball, Monster Strike, Last War and Whiteout Survival,[122] so Monster Strike holds second place inside the faster-shrinking remainder. Demand conditions for Digital Entertainment are harsher than the headline Japan figure shows (implication).

  1. LONG

STRIKE WORLD India as an observation point for overseas expansion

STRIKE WORLD entered India (soft launch Feb 19, full launch Apr 16, 2026) and scaled user acquisition in June via programmatic DOOH; the disclosed design combines localized UI, progression and onboarding with pass, ad and offer billing alongside gacha.[5][24][39] No download, revenue or retention figures for the title had been published as of Sept 5, 2026, so there is no external basis to judge the outcome either way. India monetises thinly — 8.45B downloads against ~$400M IAP[18] — so any effect is more likely to appear first in scale and retention metrics than in revenue (implication).

  2. LONG

India's RMG ban redistributes demand (both a vacuum and a contraction)

The 2025 RMG ban erased ~86% of segment revenue, drove out Dream11 and peers, and pushed the ~155M real-money players toward F2P/esports/casual — but it also shrank total monetizable spend (IAP only ~$400M).[16][18] The law's validity is undecided at the Supreme Court, so whether RMG can return is unresolved.[38] A separate May 2026 ruling upheld states' power to ban money gaming and retrospective 28% GST, pointing toward a durable ban regime while leaving the retrospective tax as a live industry grievance.[43][52] Regulation-freed demand does not necessarily convert into F2P spend, so this is a phase of intensified competition for an uncertain pool of demand (implication).

  3. WATCH

    Digital-TCG/collection demand

Pokémon TCG Pocket (~$1.49B+ lifetime, 200M+ downloads), whose monthly take varies with banner and event cadence, demonstrates that digital pack-opening plus collection can pull in new players.[6][35] From July 2026 it was joined by hololive Dreams ($57.2M in month one, 80% of it in Japan, with daily spend peaking two days after launch and down about 80% by the end of the month) and DIGIMON UP ($7.9M in two weeks, down 83% from peak within 13 days), while CookieRun: Crumble stood at $14.3M from 2.5 million players in August - openings that differ by more than an order of magnitude.[81][63][104] Pack-opening is chance-based spend, so it sits on the same ground as PEGI defaulting paid random items to 16+ for titles submitted from June 2026[53], the Brazilian court ruling[55] and national odds-disclosure demands.[15] Demand for card and collection formats is real, and three things hold at once in the genre: openings decay fast, revenue concentrates in a small set of heavy spenders[78], and it sits at the centre of the minor-protection perimeter (implication).

  4. WATCH

Diverging fortunes of 4X-survival and merge

4X-survival has entered a deceleration phase: Last War fell for a fourth straight month with user acquisition nearly switched off, dropping to 12th, and Whiteout Survival slipped to 7th.[44][46] Merge-2 moved the other way, with H1 2026 IAP up 95% to $1.24B on only 20% download growth - growth from higher spend per player - and followers multiplying, Tasty Travels growing 13x YoY.[49] The 4X case shows that ranks built on sustained UA spend unwind quickly when that spend stops, so in either mechanic the durability of a rank is inseparable from the level of ongoing investment. Both genres also share a payer structure in which revenue concentrates heavily - by month 10 the top 5% of payers produce 81% of revenue in whale-driven titles and 54% in volume-driven ones - so genre growth cannot be read apart from the addiction and inducement question (implication).[78]

  5. NOW

Instability, regulation and social risk of gacha-dependent monetization

The monthly gacha #1 reversed repeatedly in 2026 (in June, Love and Deepspace led and Wuthering Waves overtook all three HoYoverse titles; in July HoYoverse's three reclaimed the top), and revenue swings on banner cadence.[47][37] Beyond regulatory pressure (India's RMG ban, Australia's loot-box classification, odds-disclosure demands) it carries social and reputational risk around addiction, inducement and minor protection.[15] Alternative paths — pass, ad and offer models, or direct-to-consumer billing — can diversify part of the volatility and regulatory exposure, but tend to lower the per-user ceiling, and D2C places spend outside store-level age checks and consumer protections.[49] How the monetization mix is set therefore bears simultaneously on revenue predictability, regulatory resilience and social acceptability (implication).

  6. WATCH

What Roblox's deceleration shows about UGC/platform demand

Roblox landed Q2 2026 at 123M DAU (down from 132M the prior quarter), 29B hours and bookings up only 8% — the low end of guidance — with management pointing to falling per-hour monetisation among younger North American cohorts; the shares fell ~27% on the day.[48][21] The structural shift of US Gen-Alpha time from single games to UGC spaces continues, but the quarter demonstrated that more hours do not automatically become more spend. For IP holders, presence on the platform and the conditions for monetising that presence are separate questions, and minor-protection measures such as raising age-check penetration to 57% can affect both usage and spend (implication).[48]

  7. WATCH

Cost of acquiring demand in a shrinking market

H1 2026 global mobile IAP came to ~$40B (-2%) on 24B downloads (-12%), with casual downloads roughly half their H1 2021 level, while mobile ad spend on games rose to ~$7B (+8%) on 1.4T impressions (+14%), and AppLovin and AdMob take ~65% of gaming ad revenue.[45] A narrowing funnel combined with rising promotional volume points to upward pressure on acquisition costs for both sustaining existing titles and launching new ones. That over 2,000 block-puzzle titles shipped while only 1 of 120 new match-3 games cleared $100K in monthly revenue points the same way on the expected value of entry (implication).[49]

  8. WATCH

Age classification has widened from gacha to live-ops design as a whole

PEGI's new criteria (announced Mar 12, 2026, applied to titles submitted from June) do not stop at defaulting paid random items to PEGI 16: time-limited or quantity-limited offers trigger PEGI 12, daily-quest style return rewards trigger PEGI 7 (12 where non-return costs the player progress), unrestricted communication features and NFT/blockchain mechanics trigger PEGI 18. The scheme covers 35+ European countries including the UK.[53][54] The diversification away from gacha toward passes, offers and ads that this layer has been tracking should therefore be read as a move into a different part of the classification perimeter rather than out of it. Under the comparable USK regime about 30% of submitted titles had a criterion applied and roughly one in three moved up a band, so where ratings gate distribution and promotion the effect may become measurable (implication). Because already-classified titles are unaffected unless updated, the impact should surface first in new and revised releases (implication).[53]

  9. WATCH

Billing paths opened by law (Japan's MSCA, the UK CMA) and how far protection reaches

In Japan the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on Dec 18, 2025 and Apple opened third-party marketplaces and alternative payments there with iOS 26.2 on Dec 17, 2025 (10% or 21% in-app, plus 5% if Apple processes payment; 15% or 10% for linked web transactions; 5% for alternative marketplaces).[58] In the UK the CMA has proposed permitting steering to outside payment options, closing consultation on July 28, 2026, with Apple objecting that it amounts to price regulation.[57] The rising D2C share this layer recorded at first order[49][61] is thus partly the product of competition law, not only commercial choice. At the same time, store review, age assurance and refund handling do not follow spend off-store, so operator-led protection such as Roblox's push to 57% age-check penetration[48] and the migration of billing off-store pull in opposite directions. Both the fee structure and the effective coverage of protection warrant parallel observation (implication).

  10. WATCH

A caveat on reading a shrinking market as rising acquisition prices

This layer has recorded upward pressure on acquisition costs from the combination of downloads down 12% and ad spend up 8%.[45] Playtika, however, is cutting SuperPlay-related marketing by roughly 70% in H2 2026 versus H1 — with the largest single reduction falling on user acquisition for its fastest-growing title, Disney Solitaire (+288.6% YoY) — while saying the expected revenue decline is 'nowhere close to that'.[60] If that holds, the binding constraint sits on retention and IP durability rather than acquisition price. It is company guidance and unverified, and reporting also notes financial motives for restraint tied to the SuperPlay earnout.[60] Both readings should stand together until H2 results settle it (implication).

  11. WATCH

Not reading Krafton's numbers as an India-mobile result

In the political section this layer records demand concentrating on publishers able to stay compliant, and has used Krafton's H1 mobile revenue of $810M (+20.2%) and total of $1.87B (+73.3%) as support.[45] On a quarterly view, though, the record Q2 2026 was driven by PC up 155% (Subnautica 2 sold 5M in 22 days of early access) while mobile grew just 6%.[65] The structural point stands, but the source of the most recent growth is not India mobile. It is a clean example of the same company looking different depending on the aggregation window, and the same caution applies to other series in this layer, including monthly grossing ranks (implication).

  12. WATCH

The market that adds players is not the market that adds spend

Africa reached 406.25 million gamers in 2026, up 11.9% year on year against a 6.1% global average, adding 36.6 million during the year and accounting for 10.98% of the world's 3.70 billion players. Its market, however, is worth $1.98bn, about $5 per gamer a year, against $6.55bn in the Middle East - where Turkey alone, at $1.65bn, out-earns all of Africa.[97] Global downloads fell 12% over the same period.[45] Because player growth is concentrated in the least monetised region, treating volume growth as a leading indicator of revenue misreads market size. Whether low-spec redesigns such as PUBG Mobile Light, due in November[103], or fee avoidance through D2C[79] narrow that gap is untested, since no results have been published. Capital is not tracking population either: Saudi money funded the EA take-private[56] and Roblox's MENA headquarters[93] in the region with the slower-growing player base (implication).

  13. WATCH

Route-opening is advancing together with enforcement pressure

This layer records Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act, Google Play's opening to third-party stores and Apple's revised EU terms as a multiplication of billing and distribution routes.[58][89][86] On July 23, 2026, however, the European Commission fined Google EUR890m (about $1.01bn) over steering restrictions and self-preferencing in search, giving it 60 days to comply on pain of periodic penalties of up to 5% of worldwide turnover.[96] Google's announcement that Play would carry third-party app stores came a week earlier, on July 16.[89] Reading the opening as operator choice alone mistakes both what drives the change and what would sustain it. At the same time Apple's EU terms, effective Oct 1, 2026, bar alternative payments and link-outs in apps for under-13s and require parental gating for under-18 apps[86], so opening and minor protection move in opposite directions inside one fee table. Fee structure, the effective coverage of protection, and what a given revenue series actually counts[79] need to be watched separately (implication).

  14. WATCH

The measurement base for market direction moved in two directions at once

This layer has used store-measured global IAP, down 2% in H1 2026[45], as its baseline. Two updates now sit on top of it. First, Sensor Tower estimates reported by the Financial Times put US App Store consumer spending down 6% year on year in Q2 2026, the first decline in a decade of tracking, with Apple's US commission revenue down 18% over the year; the reasons given are fee-free external links after the Epic litigation and the opening of billing in Brazil and Japan, not weaker demand.[106] Second, Japan's trailing-twelve-month mobile IAP shrank to about $10bn, down 5.1%.[107] Meanwhile off-store direct-to-consumer billing runs at about 30% of top-100 casino revenue and roughly a third of Monopoly Go's, and none of it appears in store totals.[79] How much of the store-side decline is falling demand and how much is spending changing address cannot be separated within one series. Because the base moved in the two largest relevant markets, the US at about 31% of global spend[46] and Japan at about $10bn[107], the same caveat applies to the other series in this layer when they are compared with a year earlier (implication).

  15. WATCH

Minor-protection enforcement has entered a stage with deadlines and outside verification

This layer has recorded minor protection as age classification (PEGI, Australia)[53][15], court judgments (Brazil)[55] and voluntary operator age assurance (Roblox at 57% penetration)[48]. August and September 2026 added two frameworks that carry deadlines and outside verification. On Sept 1 the European Commission designated Roblox, Reddit and ChatGPT as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act, requiring assessment and mitigation of systemic risks including negative effects on minors by January 2027.[116] On Aug 20 Australia's eSafety Commissioner secured a court-enforceable undertaking from Roblox that includes an independent third-party auditor assessing its safety measures and age-estimation technology.[108] The stage has moved from operators describing their own effectiveness to outside parties verifying it against a date. The trigger is a size threshold, at least 45 million monthly average EU users[116], so smaller operators are not directly covered; if the age-estimation and safety benchmarks used in the audits become de facto reference points, however, the effect can reach beyond the designated services. Neither the effectiveness nor the side effects on engagement and spend have been tested (implication).

  16. LONG

STRIKE WORLD India as an observation point for overseas expansion

STRIKE WORLD entered India with a soft launch on Feb 19 and a full launch on Apr 16, 2026, and scaled user acquisition in June through programmatic DOOH; the design combines gacha with pass, ad and offer billing.[5][24][39] No download, revenue or retention figures had been published as of Sept 5, 2026, so there is no external basis to judge the outcome either way (implication).

  17. LONG

India's RMG ban redistributes demand (both a vacuum and a contraction)

The 2025 RMG ban pushed the roughly 155 million real-money players toward F2P, esports and casual, while total monetizable spend shrank rather than grew.[16][18] The law's validity is undecided at the Supreme Court, so whether real-money gaming can return is unresolved.[38] Regulation-freed demand does not necessarily convert into F2P spend, so this is a phase of intensified competition for an uncertain pool of demand (implication).

Instability, regulation and social risk of gacha-dependent monetization

The monthly gacha leader reversed repeatedly in 2026, and revenue swings on banner cadence.[47][37] Regulatory pressure sits on top of social risk around addiction, inducement and minor protection.[15] Pass, ad and offer models and direct-to-consumer billing can diversify part of that volatility and exposure, but tend to lower the per-user ceiling.[49] How the monetization mix is set therefore bears at once on revenue predictability, regulatory resilience and social acceptability (implication).

  19. WATCH

Cost of acquiring demand in a shrinking market

Global mobile IAP fell 2% in H1 2026 and downloads fell 12%, while mobile ad spend on games rose 8%.[45] A narrowing funnel combined with rising promotional volume points to upward pressure on acquisition costs, both for sustaining existing titles and for launching new ones. That only 1 of 120 new match-3 games cleared $100K in monthly revenue points the same way on the expected value of entry (implication).[49]

  20. WATCH

Age classification has widened from gacha to live-ops design as a whole

PEGI's new criteria bring not only paid random items but live-ops design, such as time-limited offers and return rewards, inside the classification perimeter.[53][54] The diversification away from gacha toward passes, offers and ads that this layer has tracked should therefore be read as a move into a different part of that perimeter rather than out of it. Where ratings gate distribution and promotion, the effect may become measurable (implication).

  21. WATCH

Billing paths opened by law (Japan's MSCA, the UK CMA) and how far protection reaches

The multiplication of billing routes is also a product of competition law: Japan's MSCA in full force, Google Play opening to third-party stores, and Apple's revised EU terms[58][89][86], with minor protection written into the same fee tables. Spend that moves off-store does not carry store review, age assurance and refund handling with it, and direct-to-consumer revenue does not appear in store totals.[79] Fee structure, the effective coverage of protection, and what the statistics count all warrant parallel observation (implication).

  22. WATCH

The measurement base for market direction moved in two directions at once

This layer has used store-measured IAP as its baseline for market direction.[45] Two updates now sit on it: US App Store spending fell 6% year on year in Q2 2026[106], and Japan's trailing-twelve-month total fell 5.1%[107]. Meanwhile direct-to-consumer spending does not appear in store totals at all.[79] How much of the decline is falling demand and how much is spending changing address cannot be separated within one series, and the same caveat applies to the other series here when they are compared with a year earlier (implication).

  23. WATCH

Monster Strike holds revenue on unit price in a shrinking Japan market

Japan's mobile IAP fell 5.1% over the trailing twelve months, more than the global 2% decline in H1 2026,[107][45] and eFootball led January-July with Monster Strike second.[122] In April-June, Monster Strike MAU stayed below the prior year, but payer rate and ARPPU rose, and the Digital Entertainment segment grew 21.5%.[68] Segment growth thus rests on spend per user, not user count. Where a small share of payers generates most revenue,[78] whether that unit spend holds is the point to watch (implication).

Policy decides what can be played and paid for: India's RMG ban and 2026 rules, China's ISBN-gated market and Australia's age-gating reform. State-backed capital is consolidating through EA and Savvy, and a merger has been reported. Operator age estimation is spreading at Roblox and Discord, so policy and self-regulation together narrow the entry into demand.

  1. 🇮🇳 In India the prior IT Act 69A bans still define the market: Krafton's compliance-led return pushed BGMI past 100M downloads in India alone, while Garena's official 'Free Fire India' app still has not shipped.[10] Demand concentrates on the publishers able to stay compliant — Krafton booked H1 2026 mobile revenue of $810M (+20.2% YoY), total revenue of $1.87B (+73.3%) and operating profit of $683M (+38.3%).[45] Which titles rise is a direct function of policy here. as of 2026-06
  2. 🇮🇳
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 (RMG ban effective Oct 2025) banned real-money gaming; Dream11, MPL and My11Circle shut their money formats. … The implementing Online Gaming Rules 2026 were notified on Apr 22 and came into force on May 1, 2026, putting a dedicated body — the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) — in charge of classification, supervision and enforcement. As RMG was ~86% of India's gaming revenue, demand was hollowed out and forced toward esports, casual and F2P. The government grounded the ban in social harm — addiction, household debt and suicide cases.[16][17][31][32]

  3. Global #1 Honor of Kings (Tencent) draws the bulk of its revenue from Chinese iOS — a closed, ISBN-gated market that manufactures the chart leader. In the latest complete month, July 2026, AppMagic put it at ~$157.6M, up 42% MoM, as Tencent timed major events to China's summer school break.[44] The publisher' … s own quarter shows the same split: in Q2 2026 (reported Aug 12) Tencent's domestic games revenue was RMB47.3B, up 17% YoY on Delta Force, VALORANT on PC and mobile and Roco Kingdom: World, while international games came to RMB18.6B, down 0.8% (up 4% in constant currency).[69] On market size, Niko Partners estimates put China's games market at $51.8bn in 2025, $53.9bn in 2026 and $59.8bn in 2030, with mini games accounting for 20% of mobile spending and annual ARPU rising from over $70 in 2025 to $77.68 by 2030.[107] Demand foreigners cannot access skews the global rankings, so the top of the table reflects regulatory design as much as open competition.[2][34]

  4. 🇦🇺
Australia's Sept 22, 2024 classification reform rates games with paid loot boxes (chance-based spend) M (not for under-15s) and casino-style simulated gambling R18+. … It applies to newly submitted or modified titles, putting the most direct policy pressure on the social-casino games atop the grossing charts; the reform is grounded in concern over inducement and addiction.[15] That spend, however, is partly migrating off the app stores: AppMagic reports that for some US coin-looter casino titles, direct-to-consumer channels passed 50% of revenue in H1 2026.[49] Billing paths that bypass store review and age gates narrow the effective coverage of classification rules.

  5. 🇺🇸
Platform-run age assurance is expanding as a substitute for statute. Roblox reported age-check penetration reaching 57% as of Q2 2026, alongside the rollout of Roblox Kids and Select accounts and changes to on-platform communications; in the same quarter it raised the Developer Exchange rate on spend from over-18 ( … O18) users in the US.[48] In an Aug 4, 2026 post the company said its facial age estimation had processed 338 million age-check records and that a machine-learning layer keeps re-evaluating whether an account's behaviour still matches its estimated age, using signals across social context, experience engagement, account activity, communication and learned user representations.[73] On UGC platforms with a heavily minor user base, operator-led age separation is running ahead of legislation, and both its effectiveness and its side effects on engagement and spend are now testable.

In Japan the billing path itself has been opened by statute. The Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA) came fully into force on Dec 18, 2025, and on Dec 17, 2025 Apple announced that iOS 26.2 enables third-party app marketplaces plus alternative and link-out payments for Japan. … Apple's stated Japan terms are a 10% commission for most developers (21% otherwise) on App Store apps, plus 5% if Apple processes the payment; 15% (10% under certain programmes) on web transactions linked from an app; and a 5% 'Core Technology Commission' for apps distributed through alternative marketplaces.[58] Billing routes multiply, but review, age assurance and refund handling do not follow spend off-store, so the reach of consumer protection becomes the live question.
    as of 2025-12
  7. 🇮🇳 In India the perimeter of regulation has widened beyond the RMG ban. In a Lok Sabha answer on July 29, 2026 the government clarified that online games offered as esports must be assessed and registered with the OGAI under PROGA 2025.[62] Registration is therefore a gate even for categories that are not banned, imposing procedural cost on the esports and casual segments that were expected to absorb post-ban demand — a further step in policy defining the funnel into demand. as of 2026-07
  8. China's ISBN licensing is running at a high clip rather than tightening: the NPPA approved 197 titles in July 2026, of which 175 of the domestic approvals and three of the four imports were mobile, bringing 2026 to 1,110 domestic and 37 import licences.[45] Supply inside the closed market is expanding, which raises the density of domestic competition around incumbents such as Honor of Kings. as of 2026-07
  9. The opening of distribution routes is being driven by competition law and litigation. On July 16, 2026 Google Play said that, after it and Epic jointly withdrew the 'Registered App Stores' motion, third-party app stores would be distributable through Play itself from the following week (around July 23), with Epic Games Store, Samsung Galaxy Store and AltStore among the named candidates.[89] Apple published revised EU terms on Aug 18, 2026, effective Oct 1: 26% on native in-app purchases (15% for small developers), 20% on alternative payments, 15% on link-outs and 5% on distribution outside the App Store. … The same terms impose financial and audit requirements on alternative marketplaces, bar alternative payments and link-outs in apps for under-13s, and require parental gating for apps aimed at under-18s. Epic calls the link-out charge a 'junk fee' and says it breaches the DMA, and no regulatory ruling has settled the point.[86] That route-opening and minor protection now sit in the same fee table connects directly to this layer's billing-path question.
    as of 2026-08
  10. The opening of distribution and billing routes is not only a voluntary concession; it also follows enforcement backed by penalties. On July 23, 2026 the European Commission fined Google EUR890m (about $1.01bn), finding that it prevented app developers from freely communicating and promoting offers through alternative distribution and payment channels, and that it did not treat third-party search services in a fair and non-discriminatory manner - both breaches of the Digital Markets Act. … Google has 60 days to comply, and non-compliance can draw periodic penalty payments of up to 5% of worldwide turnover.[96] Google had announced that it would open Play to third-party app stores a week earlier, on July 16.[89] The multiplying billing routes this layer records[58][86] therefore run alongside competition enforcement, and route changes cannot be explained by operator choice alone. No regulatory finding on whether the remedy is sufficient had been published as of Sept 5, 2026.
    as of 2026-09
  11. The parties rewriting billing and distribution terms have themselves changed hands. On Sept 1, 2026 Apple said Tim Cook was stepping down as chief executive after 15 years, with John Ternus succeeding him and Cook moving to executive chairman.[118] On the App Store, Phil Schiller is stepping back and Eddy Cue … takes it over, with Carson Oliver remaining App Store lead.[120] The handover comes while Japan's MSCA is fully in force[58], Apple's revised EU terms take effect on Oct 1, 2026[86], the UK CMA's steering proposals are pending[57], the European Commission has fined Google under the DMA[96], US store spending has fallen for the first time[106] and a UK collective action over ATT has been filed.[115] The appointments are not policy, but the fee, route and minor-protection terms this layer tracks are revised at each company's discretion[86], so a change in who makes those decisions raises uncertainty about where the terms go next. Nothing can be verified about that direction until actual revisions are published.

  12. Sovereign capital is showing up in site selection as well as acquisitions. On Aug 26, 2026 Roblox said it will place its MENA regional headquarters in Riyadh, backed by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Investment, the Riyadh Creative District and the General Authority of Media Regulation, and building on an education partnership with Savvy Games Group (its Play to Learn competition drew over 700,000 Saudi high-school students). … The company cites Saudi creator earnings up 59% YoY against more than $1.5B earned by Roblox creators globally in 2025.[93] Read alongside PIF's 93% of EA after the $55bn take-private[56], state-linked involvement is widening behind the demand map through both capital and physical presence. Given how many minors use UGC spaces, the dispersal of safety jurisdiction runs alongside it.[85]
    as of 2026-09
  13. At its centre, Savvy Games Group's chief executive Brian Ward stepped down on Sept 1, 2026, with Turqi Alnowaiser, deputy governor of the PIF and head of its International Investments Division, taking over as interim chief executive. … Savvy had deployed about $13bn of a $38bn commitment as of March 2026, including the $4.9bn Scopely acquisition and the purchase of Niantic's games business, and a $6bn acquisition of Moonton Games is reported to be in progress.[112] Capital is concentrating while the organisation deploying it is in flux.
    as of 2026-09
  14. State-backed consolidation may go further. Bloomberg reported, as relayed on Sept 10, 2026, that Saudi Arabia's PIF is considering merging Savvy Games Group with EA. … No final decision has been made, and any merger would likely follow Savvy's pending $6bn acquisition of Mobile Legends maker Moonton.[137] The PIF holds 93% of EA[56], and Savvy changed chief executive on Sept 1.[112] This is a report only; whether and when a merger happens is unconfirmed.
    as of 2026-09
  15. Operator-run age assurance has spread to community platforms outside games. On Sept 23, 2026 Discord said it had introduced a global system that classifies users as teen (13-17) or adult from signals such as account history, activity patterns and joined communities, without analysing messages or calls; it says over 90% of users will not need a manual check. … Teen accounts get restricted access to age-gated servers and filtered messages from non-friends.[142] The approach resembles Roblox's behavioural-signal estimation[73], and its accuracy and handling of misclassification have not been externally verified.

Store spending is contracting further: Q3 2026 IAP fell 7% year on year and September was $6.13bn (-7% MoM). The US is the single largest mobile-spend market (~31% of global in early 2026); its casual heavyweights are flat to slightly down, averaging ~$100M/month for Royal Match, ~$95M for Candy Crush and ~$85M for Monopoly Go across H1, with Royal Match roughly flat at ~$98.8M in July.[46][44] Anniversary operations … can move a single month sharply: Scopely-owned Pokémon GO earned ~$101.1M in July on its 10th-anniversary programme — its best month since July 2021 — climbing 16 places to #3.[44][45] Scopely, already Monopoly Go's publisher, bought Niantic's games business for $3.5B in May 2025, continuing the consolidation of Western casual.[33] Demand rotates between genres and titles while the overall market shrank 2% in H1.[45]

Roblox (Roblox Corp) anchors US demand, but its growth decelerated visibly in 2026. Q2 2026 (reported July 30) showed revenue of $1.469B (+36% YoY), bookings of $1.557B (+8%, the low end of guidance), 123M DAU (+10%, down from 132M the prior quarter), 29B hours engaged (+5%, down from 31B) and a $185M net loss. … Management attributed the bookings shortfall to falling per-hour monetisation, most notably among younger cohorts in the US and Canada, citing a shift of engagement from high-monetising 2025-vintage viral games to lower-monetising new and evergreen titles, changes to the Recommended For You algorithm, and the discontinuation of cross-experience game pass sales. The shares fell ~27% on the day.[48][21] Platform-shaped demand remains large (27M monthly unique payers, +15%), but this quarter showed that more hours do not automatically convert into more spend.

Japan's IP-led collection launches produced a much larger opening than DIGIMON UP. hololive Dreams, from CyberAgent subsidiary QualiArts, launched on July 23, 2026 and took $57.2M in mobile player spending in its first month (excluding its Steam version), with 2M downloads by Aug 8. … Japan supplied 80% of that spend ($46.1M), with Taiwan and the US at 6% each. The rhythm-RPG hybrid shipped with 150 songs and pairs character-unlock gacha with paid memberships (badges, stickers, medals and similar), and by August it ranked 22nd worldwide and first among music games on Google Play. Daily spend, however, peaked at $3.8M on July 25 - two days after launch - and had fallen to $764,000 by the end of the first month, down about 80% from peak.[81] DIGIMON UP, launched the same month, took $7.9M in two weeks and decayed 83% from peak[63]: openings differ by more than an order of magnitude, but the decay gradient is similar in both. The domestic concentration mirrors the structural limit visible in Monster Strike's 99% Japan reliance.[4]

Monster Strike has earned $11.4B gross ($8B net) over 11.5 years but 99% of that is from Japan; it peaked at $1.7B in 2016 and fell to $570.7M in 2024 — about a third of peak.[4] The recent direction is less simple. … MIXI's Q1 FY2027 (April-June 2026, reported July 31) showed group revenue of ¥47.07B (+50.3% YoY) and operating profit of ¥5.428B (+102.8%), with the Digital Entertainment segment at ¥19.5B (+21.5%). The company said Monster Strike's MAU stayed below the prior year while IP collaborations lifted the payer rate and ARPPU, so higher ARPU produced revenue growth, and it cited a UI/UX overhaul aimed at arresting the MAU decline. Most of the group increase came from the Sports segment (¥21.6B, +94.5%), including the consolidation of PointsBet.[68] Revenue concentrated in one title and one market remains a driver of volatility in MIXI's results, and whether spend per user keeps offsetting a smaller user base is the thing to watch. A total mobile IAP market down 2% in H1 2026 also narrows the headroom for mature titles to recover.[45]

  5. 🇮🇳 India is a ~$5B gaming market in 2026 (8.45B downloads, ~488M players) but monetises thinly — only ~$400M IAP.[18] The 2025 RMG ban erased ~86% of the segment's revenue and pushed out Dream11 and peers, shrinking total monetizable spend.[16] Competition for the remaining F2P/pass/ad demand has intensified: BGMI's paying users rose +17% YoY in Q1 and Krafton's H1 2026 mobile revenue reached $810M (+20.2%).[19][45] The gap between a vast user base and small per-user spend remains the market's defining feature. as of 2026-06

Australia's grossing charts lean heavily on social-casino/slots: 42matters' snapshot, dated Feb 16, 2025, had Lightning Link Casino Slots (Aristocrat's Product Madness) #1 with Cashman Casino and Heart of Vegas also in the top ten and Monopoly Go a fixture — the page has not been updated since and is not a current rank … ing.[12] The subgenre is not growing: AppMagic puts coin-looter casino IAP at ~$1B in H1 2026, down 11% YoY, with downloads up 33% even as revenue fell.[49] That spend sits adjacent to inducement and addiction risk, the 2024 classification reform puts a legal cap on its upside, and part of it is moving off-store into direct-to-consumer channels.[15][49]

The destination of the 'IAP to ads' shift is not itself stable. AppLovin — half of the duo holding ~65% of gaming ad revenue — posted Q2 2026 revenue of $1.92B (+53% YoY), adjusted EBITDA of $1.61B (+58%, an 84% margin) and net income of $1.27B, yet missed forward guidance for the first time in several quarters and saw its shares fall more than 20%. … The CEO attributed it to timing — 'our pace of meaningful model improvement was lighter than normal during the quarter, and the next step up in model performance landed just after quarter end' — with higher AI training costs also cited as margin pressure. Q3 guidance is $2.06-2.09B (+46-48%). Non-gaming consumer ad spend hit a record, 28% above Q4 2025, but is described as too small to offset gaming volatility.[59][45] Leaning on advertising therefore substitutes one exposure (banner cadence) for another (the improvement rate of a recommendation model).

A counter-example to the 'acquisition is getting more expensive' consensus has also appeared. Playtika returned to profit in Q2 2026 with revenue of $731.1M (+5% YoY) and adjusted EBITDA of $206.1M (+23.4%, a 28.2% margin), as Disney Solitaire revenue rose 288.6% YoY. … In the same release it said it will cut SuperPlay-related marketing by roughly 70% in H2 2026 versus H1, with the single largest reduction in user acquisition falling on Disney Solitaire; the CFO said the 'revenue decline that we expect, it's nowhere close to that'. Full-year guidance is $2.75-2.85B. Elsewhere in the portfolio, Bingo Blitz took $145.1M (-9.5% YoY) and June's Journey $74.7M (+8.1%).[60] Playtika's direct-to-consumer revenue already runs at about $1B a year, roughly 30% of the company (FY25 D2C $814.5M; Q4 D2C +43.2% YoY), so off-store billing is a primary base rather than an experiment.[61] With market-wide downloads down 12%, an operator concluding that revenue holds while acquisition spend is cut qualifies the simple reading that a shrinking market must mean rising acquisition prices.

Reading Krafton's record numbers as an India-mobile result misstates them. Q2 2026 was a record — revenue of ₩1.29T (~$899.5M, +95% YoY) and operating profit of ₩410.9B (~$286.5M, +67%) — but the split shows PC at ₩560.4B (~$390.8M, +155% YoY) against mobile at ₩451B (~$314.5M), up only 6% YoY, with the company crediting Subnautica 2 (5M sales in 22 days of early access) and PUBG expansions.[65] The half-year aggregate — mobile $810M (+20.2%), total $1.87B (+73.3%)[45] — makes mobile growth look stronger than the latest quarter does. … Demand does concentrate on publishers able to stay compliant, but the source of the most recent quarter's growth was a one-off PC hit, not India mobile.

The country split was roughly Japan 44%, US 20%, South Korea 12%. 12. The quarters reported by China's largest publishers diverged from the global contraction. Tencent's Q2 2026 (reported Aug 12) showed group revenue of RMB204.8B (+11% YoY), domestic games of RMB47.3B (+17%, accelerating from +6% in Q1) and international games of RMB18.6B (-0.8%, or +4% in constant currency), with lo … wer revenue from certain Supercell titles cited on the international side.[69] NetEase's Q2 2026 (reported Aug 20) had net revenues of RMB30.1B (+7.9%) and online games of RMB24.5B (+10% YoY, -2% QoQ), attributed to self-developed titles including the Fantasy Westward Journey franchise and Where Winds Meet; the company said Marvel Rivals reached top-seller positions in several regions including the US after summer updates.[70] A global mobile IAP figure down 2% in H1[45] and double-digit growth at Chinese publishers hold at the same time, so 'the market' cannot be read as a single series.

  13. The gap between titles released and titles that work is more extreme than the grossing charts suggest. A Moloco study published on Aug 26, 2026, covering 55 launches representing $1.5B in IAP across more than 20 million payers, finds that of roughly 190,000 games released in 2025 only about 2,500 - 1.3% - passed 500,000 downloads. … The top end monetises faster: IAP revenue per install among US users rose 126% between 2021 and 2025, and time to $20M in combined IAP and subscription revenue fell 21% between 2022 and 2025. On payer structure, revenue per paying user rises 250% from month one to year end in whale-driven titles but only 25% in volume-driven ones, and by month 10 the top 5% of payers generate 81% of revenue in whale-driven titles and 54% in volume-driven ones. Only 15% of eventual high-spending payers make their first purchase in the launch month. Breakout titles ran 94% of ad budget against ROAS objectives against a 65% average, and used 93 distinct creatives on average against 37.[78] In a shrinking market revenue is concentrating into a small number of hits[45] - and, within each hit, into a small number of heavy spenders, which ties the addiction and inducement debate directly to the distribution of who is paying.[15]

  14. The estimator itself has now flagged that market totals may be undercounting. On Aug 25, 2026 Sensor Tower said some titles take more than 30% of revenue through direct-to-consumer web shops, that casino leads by genre with about 30% of top-100 revenue coming through web stores, that Monopoly Go takes roughly a third that way, and that some publishers run 40% or more off-store. … The genre order runs casino, RPG, tabletop, strategy, puzzle, and traffic sources differ by title — Supercell 56% direct and 37% social, Raid: Shadow Legends 47% direct and 49% social. A separate Appcharge estimate puts the D2C market as high as $17B.[79] Against store-measured H1 IAP of ~$40B, down 2%[45], true spend including off-store may be stronger than that -2%. Yet casino, the genre with the highest D2C share, saw H1 2026 IAP fall 11% YoY[49], so 'uncounted' cannot simply be read as 'growing'. Neither direction can be asserted without checking what a given series covers.

Western casual has produced a fresh example of a new entrant reaching the top tier. Its first month, August 2025, took just $1,500 in player spending, rising to $110,000 in month two. The US accounts for 32% of installs and 66% of revenue, with Russia at 6% and the UK 5% of installs, and the UK 5% and Australia 4% of revenue. Scopely acquired a majority stake in February 2026 at a valuation above $1B.[80] The game won Game of the Year at the Pocket Gamer Mobile Games Awards on Aug 26, 2026, with Loom Games named Best Developer.[101] Against 1 of 120 new match-3 titles clearing $100K a month[49] and 2,500 of 190,000 2025 releases passing 500,000 downloads[78], breakouts still happen - from very quiet openings, and often ending up inside an incumbent.[33]

The advertising side of the business shows the same split. In July 2026 US in-app ad revenue (Sensor Tower), Miniclip led with $47.8M without a single breakout - 14 of its titles each cleared $1M - followed by Learnings at $42.7M (+3.4% MoM) and Tripledot at $40.3M, which closed its acquisition of Supersonic on Aug 4. … By format, arrow puzzles drew over 53M installs worldwide, with Miniclip's Arrow Puzzle: Tap Puzzle Games at 19.3M installs and its Arrows Puzzle Escape on $6.6M in revenue. Flow Games' Smash Fest took over 15M installs and $4M in IAP in two months before being removed from Google Play, and about 70 copycats shipped this year, 50 of them since June. Ten Square Games posted Q2 2026 bookings of $25.3M (PLN93.3M, +14.6% YoY), $52M for the half, and adjusted EBITDA of $5.8M (+13.5% QoQ).[88] Across IAP, advertising and D2C alike, revenue divides between a few skilled operators and a large volume of imitators.[78]

Sensor Tower puts in-app purchase revenue at ~$40B, down 2% YoY, on 24B downloads, down 12%; mobile ad spend on games rose to ~$7B (+8%) on 1.4T impressions (+14%), so monetisation is shifting partly from IAP toward advertising, with AppLovin and AdMob holding ~65% of gaming ad revenue.[45] as of 2026-08

Off-store D2C growth[79] is one candidate explanation for the gap, not a proven one.

Sensor Tower estimates reported by the Financial Times put US App Store consumer spending down 6% year on year in Q2 2026, the first decline in the decade the series has been tracked, against +9% in Q2 2025. … The same estimates have Apple's US commission revenue contracting 18% over the year, attributing the change to fee-free external payment links permitted after the Epic litigation and to the opening of billing in Brazil and Japan. Epic chief executive Tim Sweeney called the commissions '30% junk fees' and described App Store search ads as 'a rigged pay-to-win system favoring the most greedy monetizing developers'.[106] This layer has recorded the multiplication of billing routes as a product of competition law and enforcement[96][86][58]; the effect is now visible in the store's own totals as a double-digit fall in commission revenue. Two caveats hold. These are Sensor Tower estimates rather than Apple disclosure, and spending that moves off-store disappears from market statistics[79], so the 6% cannot be read as a decline in demand itself. Figures compiled on Sept 2, 2026 put Japan's trailing-twelve-month mobile in-app purchase revenue at about $10bn (roughly JPY1.56 trillion), down 5.1% year on year, on 585 million downloads, down 5.4%.[107] That revises down the '~$11B Japan' level this layer had been carrying, and the decline is steeper than the 2% global fall in H1 2026 IAP.[45] Monster Strike draws 99% of its revenue from Japan[4] and grew in April-June 2026 through ARPU rather than users.[68] Where the market itself is contracting, the durability of raising spend per user becomes the thing to watch, and because that increase came from both payer rate and ARPPU[68] it connects to the general concentration of revenue in a few heavy spenders[78] and to the addiction and inducement question.[15] as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
  6. Alongside the contraction in in-house development[71][84], buyers are consolidating proven live operations. On Sept 1, 2026 Supercell signed an agreement to acquire Metacore, maker of Merge Mansion, and said it expected to close by the end of the month; terms were not disclosed. Merge Mansion has earned about $540M since its 2020 launch and took about $7.7M in the preceding 30 days, and Metacore had already closed offices in Germany and Sweden and cut 159 staff in Helsinki.[110] South Korea's NC has spent about $300M on four studios (JustPlay for more than $200M in March 2026, plus Lihuhu in Vietnam, Springcomes in Korea and Moving Eye in Slovenia), which together run roughly 200 live mobile games. Its head of mobile casual says NC targets profitable studios making $50-100M a year and will 'keep buying actively' in Japan, China, India and Turkey, aiming to grow the division to $5bn by 2030, about a third of company revenue against 22% today.[111] With a 1.3% success rate for new releases[78] and downloads down 12%[45], the set of suppliers turns over through changes of ownership in running titles rather than through new development. Because acquisition prices attach to live revenue, the trend is also the mirror image of a falling expected value for new launches. as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
  7. In the latest complete month, July 2026, AppMagic had Honor of Kings #1 at ~$157.6M, then Roblox ~$101.6M, Pokémon GO ~$101.1M, Gossip Harbor ~$99.7M, PUBG MOBILE ~$99M, Royal Match ~$98.8M and Whiteout Survival ~$98.7M — ranks 2-7 compressed around $100M; mobilegamer.biz's separate write-up of the same AppMagic data for July shows the same ordering.[44][99] Absolute figures, ranks and MoM deltas diverge by estimator (AppMagic/Sensor Tower/mobilegamer) and past months get revised, so comparisons should stay within one series.[3][25] as of 2026-07 · superseded by ↓
  8. No August 2026 monthly ranking had been published as of this writing (Sept 5, 2026); these monthly charts appear around the 8th or 9th of the following month, so July remains the most recent month available as a complete table. Piecemeal August figures do exist: the China-exclusive Valorant Mobile took about $37M and the New York Times' Wordle and Crossword apps recorded a best-ever month at about $7M.[107] as of 2026-08 · resolved
  9. The retrenchment is not confined to large studios. GungHo said its 2024 title Disney Pixel RPG, which took nearly 1.5M downloads and over $3.1M in revenue, will close on Sept 30, 2026, with refunds of unused in-game currency accepted until Jan 13, 2027.[119] as of 2026-08 · resolved
  10. The latest complete month is now August 2026. On Sept 24, 2026 Sensor Tower put August global mobile game consumer spending across the App Store and Google Play at $6.57bn, down 1% month on month, on 3.76bn downloads, up 1%. The top grossers were Honor of Kings, Gossip Harbor, Whiteout Survival, Royal Match and Candy Crush Saga. The US took 28.6% of revenue, China 16.7% and Japan 12.2%, and India accounted for 614 million downloads.[121] Per-title figures were not published, and July's order (AppMagic: Honor of Kings, then Roblox and Pokémon GO) comes from a different estimator, so a change in rank cannot be read directly as a change in demand.[44] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  11. 🇺🇸 Competition over how ad revenue is divided has moved into court. AppLovin alleges that Unity's Ad Quality SDK collected data on the ads AppLovin wins, including creatives, users, devices, revenue and engagement, and used it to train competing bidding models. It applied in California for a temporary restraining order (reported Oct 1, 2026), asking that collection stop within five business days and the SDK be changed within 30 days, and it opened arbitration over breach of contract, trade-secret misappropriation and unfair competition. Unity called the filings "a classic case of a dominant incumbent resorting to litigation and intimidation" and said it will oppose the application.[149] As spending partly shifts from purchases to advertising,[45] the handling of bidding data has become a point of dispute. as of 2026-10 · superseded by ↓

Downloads are led by Roblox, Free Fire and arrow puzzles, but total downloads are shrinking. The US plays hero and extraction shooters plus Roblox's Gen-Alpha base, India BGMI/Free Fire, Japan collection titles and Monster Strike. The gacha #1 reverses on banners and backlash, and a Monster Strike AI-voice plan was shelved after fan objections. Addiction, inducement and minor protection remain open concerns.

  1. The demand funnel is hyper-casual/puzzle, but the funnel itself is shrinking. Sensor Tower puts H1 2026 global downloads at 24B, down 12% YoY, with casual-game downloads nearly halving from 11.2B in H1 2021 to 6.34B.[45] In the latest complete month, July 2026, top downloads were Roblox at about 22.9M, Free F … ire (MAX) about 22.8M and Arrow Puzzle: Tap Puzzle Games about 19.3M, followed by Block Blast, Ludo King and Subway Surfers.[44][100] World Cup demand pushed Soccer Superstar, Football League 2026 and EA Sports FC Mobile into the top downloads, but the lift peaked on the July 19 final and all three fell away afterwards.[100] January 2026's leader was Block Blast (Hungry Studio) at 28.1M[1], and Arrows: Puzzle Escape (Miniclip), which appeared in April, accelerated to 28.6M in May with copycat Arrows GO! at 23.8M[2][26]. The arrow-puzzle format is now an entrenched clone genre, but it is competing for a shrinking pool of installs.[51]

Roblox is the hub of Gen-Alpha demand: among age-checked users, 35% are under 13 and 38% are 13-17.[21] Q2 2026 logged 123M DAU (down from 132M the prior quarter) and 29B hours, with age-check penetration reaching 57% and the rollout of Roblox Kids and Select accounts.[48] In the same quarter the company re … ported falling per-hour monetisation among younger US and Canadian cohorts — on a platform with this many minors, safety, age separation and monetisation design are two sides of one question, and hours can rise without spend following.[48]

India's taste is battle-royale-dominant: BGMI (Krafton) cleared 100M India downloads post-return, and Free Fire (Garena) ranked among the world's most-downloaded in Feb 2026 even under its ban, with low-spec-friendly Free Fire MAX owning everyday demand.[10][11] In July 2026 Free Fire was still #2 worldwide … on downloads at 22.8M.[44] After the RMG ban, BR and esports anchor the surviving demand, and Krafton continues ground-level community investment such as the BGMI Campus MVP student-ambassador programme.[45]

  4. 🇯🇵 Japan's demand is governed by collection/gacha culture: Pokémon TCG Pocket's digital pack-opening draws new players, while Monster Strike was near the top of Japan grossing over New Year 2026 (Jan 1-2) and — alongside FGO — is sustained by an event-driven, high-ARPU core.[14][6] July 2026 added new IP-led gacha/collection entrants such as hololive Dreams and DIGIMON UP.[44] The chance-based draw mechanic keeps minor-protection and odds-disclosure in view, and the concentration of revenue in a small set of high-spending users remains a subject of ongoing social scrutiny. as of 2026-07
  5. Gacha demand is banner-bound and swings hard month to month, and the #1 spot reverses. In the latest complete month, July 2026, iXBT had HoYoverse's three titles reclaim the top: Genshin Impact ~$56.0M (+68% MoM), Honkai: Star Rail ~$43.1M (+51%) and Zenless Zone Zero ~$35.9M (+267%), followed by Naruto Mobile ~$33M and Goddess of Victory: Nikke ~$27.5M.[47] The month before, the same tracker had Papergames' Love and Deepspace #1 with Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves ahead of all three HoYoverse titles.[37] May and January also had different leaders[29][22], so the monthly order is a function of banner timing. … Aggregate tracked gacha spend was ~$649M in July 2026, up ~13.1% MoM.[28] Spend skews to a small set of high-value spenders and carries inducement and addiction concerns.

Australian players skew to social-casino/slots, where Lightning Link-style reel spectacle and daily bonuses anchor retention — Aristocrat's slot heritage shapes mobile demand too, unlike the casual-puzzle center of gravity in the US.[12] These gambling-like mechanics and spend draw concern over addiction and induceme … nt risk and are a subject of age-rating and regulatory debate.[15] Recently, coin-looter casino downloads have risen while revenue fell 11% YoY, so new installs are not converting into spend.[49]

  7. A community layer outside the game itself is starting to publish measured retention effects. On Aug 26, 2026 Discord said it is bringing Social Layer — which lets developers embed Discord's social features inside games — to mobile, citing a causal study of more than 15 PC games launched since December 2024 (internal metrics as of Mar 31, 2026) that showed retention up 31%, sessions up to 47% longer and up to 57% more days on which players launched the game. … It also offers rewarded formats such as Play Quest+ and social-commerce tie-ins.[90] The measurement is the company's own and has no third-party verification, but with total downloads down 12%[45] and only 1.3% of new releases reaching 500,000 installs[78], an off-store discovery route arriving with numbers attached is worth tracking.
    as of 2026-08
  8. Community backlash has also surfaced as a constraint on live-ops design. Supercell removed Clash Royale's Season Shop - which mainly benefited a small hardcore segment most players did not know existed - and spread rewards wider. … The metrics improved; game design lead James Back said that 'in April we had more players coming back, and they were playing the game more often'. But review-bombing pulled the game's Google Play rating down, and the new levels and Hero features added afterwards were rejected too, despite testing well internally. Back's retrospective was blunt - 'at the end of last year, we killed Clash Royale' and 'how did we misjudge this so badly? Like, how did we get this quite so wrong…?' - while community manager Emilia Russell said that 'despite the fact that more players were benefiting from rewards over time, the individual player experience was still affected'. The company has committed to adding no further card levels and to treating community creators as co-collaborators from early in development; it also brought back Chaos Mode in March 2026 after players asked for it.[95] Changing reward and monetisation design draws on a stock of trust as well as on metrics - a retention constraint distinct from the one visible at mo.co.[72]
    as of 2026-08
  9. Monthly swings in gacha are not set by banner timing alone. AppMagic estimates put Papergames' Love and Deepspace at about $10.3M in July 2026, down 68% from about $32.4M in June and below half its previous low of about $21.4M in May 2024, a record low for the title. … Version 6.0 peaked at about $906,000 in daily spending against about $6.7M at the version 5.0 launch in December 2025, an order of magnitude apart.[109] The trigger was player opposition to a planned sixth romance option, Valko: objections to going from five options to six, argument over whether the character suited the game's largely female audience, and a reading advanced by Chinese players and state media linking an in-game file named 'A-0731' to Unit 731, the Imperial Japanese Army unit that conducted human experiments. Infold Games dropped Valko before release but shipped the update anyway, and revenue has not recovered.[109] This layer had recorded the same title as the gacha leader in June.[37] One live-ops decision, met by community and public reaction, removed two thirds of a leading gacha title's monthly revenue inside a month, and as with the backlash to Clash Royale's reward changes[95] the binding constraint sits upstream of monetisation design, in retention and trust.

  13. Others are filling the demand: Chillbase's OneState RP at ~$75.7M on 57.5M downloads, Hotta Studio's Neverness to Everness at ~$38.9M on 10M, and Gameloft's Gangstar Vegas at ~$33.4M on 200M. … Gangstar Mirage City, from Tencent's Level Infinite and Gameloft, went into soft launch on Aug 20, 2026 across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, MENA and Latin America, opening on 30 million pre-registrations in nine languages with no revenue figures published.[76]

Google Play built a large stand at the entrance to Hall 7, its first major gamescom presence in a decade.[83] as of 2026-08
  16. Total gacha spending barely moved in August. GachaRevenue puts August 2026 gacha revenue at about $632.6M, up 2.98% month on month, with the largest rise at Date A Live: Spirit Echo (+950%) and the largest fall at FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS (-92.98%).[28] Working back from August and its growth rate gives about $614M for July, which does not match the roughly $649M this layer recorded earlier from the same tracker[28]. … The tracker revises past months, so monthly growth rates need that caveat when series are joined. The August per-title order has not been confirmed.

Winning mechanics are merge-2 (Gossip Harbor was third in September), 4X and extraction shooters; 4X is slowing globally but grew 9.4% in Japan. Monthly app submissions more than doubled in 16 months while downloads shrink. Monetization is spreading from gacha to passes, offers, ads and D2C, and off-store surfaces where games are played or generated, such as YouTube Playables and Google's Playground, are growing.

  1. 4X/survival strategy remains in the top tier but has entered a deceleration phase. Whiteout Survival (from $936M in 2024 to $1.4B+ in 2025) slipped to ~$98.7M and 7th place in the latest complete month, July 2026, while Last War fell for a fourth consecutive month to ~$64.5M and 12th, with AppMagic reporting it … s user acquisition 'almost switched off' (it ran at $120-135M/month early in the year).[44][46] Century Games' Kingshot rose to ~$812M in its first year after a Feb 2025 launch and still held a top-ten spot in June 2026 (8th on mobilegamer's tally), but its growth flattened after a May peak.[46][36] Leaders churn frequently even within one template, and pulling UA spend shows up immediately as a rank decline.[3]
    as of 2026-07
  2. The merge mechanic is expanding fast as a high-LTV genre. AppMagic puts merge-2 IAP at $1.24B in H1 2026, up 95% from $636M a year earlier, with downloads up only 20% — growth driven by higher spend per player. … Microfun's Gossip Harbor holds around $100M a month and took ~$99.7M for 4th place worldwide in the latest complete month, July 2026, while followers such as Tasty Travels grew 13x YoY.[49][44][2] The low-SKU, high-ARPPU design drives copycats, but reliance on a single title leaves monthly revenue prone to swings.[27]
    as of 2026-07
  3. At the low end of casual, cloning and mass production have sped up and the expected value of entry has fallen. AppMagic puts H1 2026 casual IAP at ~$11B, roughly flat YoY, with puzzle at $4.9B (44%). … Match-3 is plateauing at $2.5B (-0.4%), and of 120 new match-3 titles only one cleared $100K in monthly revenue. Meanwhile hybrid-casual puzzles — sort, screw and block games — grew into a ~$600M IAP segment, with sort puzzles up 229% YoY and over 2,000 block-puzzle titles launched (+89%). Farming sim reached $576M IAP (+15%) on downloads up 33%, and Hay Day hit $1M in daily revenue on May 1, 2026 ($1.5B lifetime).[49][45] Mass production widens the funnel, but with total downloads down 12% the expected revenue per title thins out.

  4. Extraction shooters coexist with premium single-player and remasters. Embark's ARC Raiders cleared 16M units (an estimated $500M+) in about six months and drove Nexon to a record Q1 2026 (North America/Europe revenue up ~310% YoY, total revenue +34% to ~$953M).[8][20] Sandfall's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 … reached 8M units and won GOTY within a year.[9] July 2026 on Steam and consoles split revenue between evergreens (Counter-Strike 2 ~$220.7M, Dota 2 ~$71.9M) and remasters/indies, with counter-examples such as Halo: Campaign Evolved stalling at ~$11.0M on mixed reception.[50] Revenue paths outside live service clearly exist, but single-hit outcomes are hard to reproduce.
    as of 2026-07
  5. Monetization design is diversifying away from pure gacha, and the billing path itself is moving off-store. The non-gacha mechanics atop the 2026 grossing charts — 4X-survival, merge and match-3 — lean on offer/pack/subscription billing rather than probabilistic gacha[44], and gacha-led operations increasingly layer character/item passes, offer-based products and in-app ads to reduce gacha dependence amid regulatory pressure on inducement and addiction (Australia's loot-box classification, odds-disclosure demands)[15]. … The ad side is scaling too: mobile ad spend on games ran to ~$7B in H1 2026 (+8%)[45]. In some genres direct-to-consumer billing has passed 50% of revenue, shifting spend outside store fees and store review[49]. MIXI's STRIKE WORLD (global Monster Strike) likewise keeps its core mechanic while combining gacha with passes, offer-based products and ads[5][24]. Pass and ad models trade lower addiction and regulatory exposure for a generally lower per-user ceiling, and D2C raises its own question by placing spend outside store-level age checks and consumer protections.

  6. Generative AI is now being quantified inside existing operations, cutting the opposite way from the tooling exits.[66] On Aug 18, 2026 MTG's Playamp division - the core business spanning Plarium, InnoGames, Hutch, Snowprint, Ninja Kiwi and Futureplay - described AI use across development, art, marketing and business intelligence. … On InnoGames' Sunrise Village a custom 'AI Stage Designer', itself built in about two months, cut stage production from ten weeks to three, and work that previously took about 25 people is now run by three. InnoGames cut planned 2025 external art outsourcing spend by 60% and reports three times the AI-assisted ad creative output of the same period in 2023. CEO Oliver Bulloss frames AI as an 'amplifier' for existing teams rather than a replacement for staff, arguing that 'when AI saves time, studios reinvest savings into more projects, not cost-cutting'.[87] These are company claims without third-party verification; if they hold, per-title production cost falls while the demand-side conditions do not - a 1.3% success rate[78] and downloads down 12%[45] - which points toward more supply chasing the same installs.

  7. Platform technical requirements are becoming a selection axis of their own. On Aug 27, 2026 Google said Google Play's quality standards will add dynamic memory use, bitmap memory use and DEX code optimisation — at least 25% coverage across optimisation, shrinking and obfuscation using R8 or an equivalent. … The standards become enforceable in February 2027, and non-compliant apps face reduced visibility and publishing capability on Play rather than removal; Play Console gains diagnostic metrics, and Zero-Tap Sign-In becomes mandatory for eligible apps in April 2027 (games are currently exempt).[91] What is new is that a resource-efficiency requirement is enforced through discovery itself, which adds another gate in front of high-volume low-quality output.[78]

  8. Large PvP IP is also entering as mobile-native supply. On Aug 27, 2026 Blizzard said Overwatch Rush soft-launches in Indonesia on Aug 31, with Malaysia and the Philippines to follow, describing it as 'an entirely new game - not a port - built specifically for mobile players': two modes (Duo Free for All and 3v3 Control), three maps, the new Vanguard hero Brigitte and a reworked Lucio. … Monetisation centres on cosmetics, for example a 2,000-credit skin bundle, alongside a Hero Levels progression system.[94] The soft launch began on schedule on Aug 31, 2026 and was running in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines as of Sept 2. No download, revenue or retention figures have been published.[113] How a large non-probabilistic monetisation design settles against hero and extraction-shooter demand[23][8] is an observation point that also touches PEGI's classification axis.[53]

  9. The shape of UGC supply is itself moving. As of August 2026 Meta had expanded Pocket - an app that generates short interactive pieces it calls 'gizmos' from text, photo and sound prompts and shares them in a TikTok-style feed - from Brazil to United States players.[98] In the same month Roblox said it would bar experiences in its Kids and Select tiers that combine autoplay, infinite scroll, autoscroll or replay loops with rewards for continued viewing.[85] Two of the largest UGC games surfaces thus moved in opposite directions on the same infinite-feed mechanic inside one month. … Meta has published no usage, monetisation or age-assurance figures for Pocket, and the quality and rights position of generated content cannot be verified from outside. Set against falling production costs[87][105] and a demand side where only 1.3% of the roughly 190,000 games released in 2025 passed 500,000 downloads[78], it is worth tracking as a further route by which supply expands.

  10. Redesigning for low-specification handsets is becoming a supply route aimed at regions whose player numbers grow while spending stays thin.[97] Krafton opened pre-registration for PUBG Mobile Light, developed by Lightspeed Studios, on Aug 25, 2026, for a November release. … It keeps Erangel and the core combat while holding the download to about 1GB on Android and 2GB on iOS and letting players choose what to store locally, and it carries cosmetics across from existing accounts and ships updates alongside the main game.[103] On the distribution side, the Aptoide storefront returned to Google Play in the United States after more than ten years, under Google's new Play Catalog Access programme.[98] Where Free Fire MAX has held low-spec demand[10][11], large publishers are now entering the same segment, in the same direction as Google Play's resource-efficiency requirements.[91] Neither retention nor revenue results have been published, so whether any of it converts into spending is untested.

  11. Large PvP IP built for mobile is proving out inside a closed market. The China-exclusive Valorant Mobile (Tencent and Riot) reached an estimated $300M and more than 25 million downloads in its first year, and took about $37M in August 2026 alone.[107] Where Overwatch Rush is still in soft launch across Southeast Asia[113], the comparable hero-shooter demand has already scaled in a market protected by ISBN licensing. … The contrast reproduces at genre level the political point that the top of the chart is partly a product of regulatory design.[69] The Valorant Mobile figures are estimates and the coverage of China Android in them is not stated. How far a cosmetics-led, non-probabilistic monetisation model scales is also a question for the classification regimes.[53]

The game has made $7M in in-app purchases from 9.2 million downloads, with the US at 27%, Japan 12% and Germany 7%.[123] Operations have shrunk a step further than on Aug 14, when Supercell said a shutdown was not planned[72].

  16. The layer's reading that 4X-survival is decelerating has counter-evidence. AppMagic had Last War falling for four straight months through July and Whiteout Survival slipping to seventh.[44] But Sensor Tower's August worldwide grossing chart put Whiteout Survival third[121], and in Japan 4X strategy was the top-grossing subgenre in January-July 2026, up 9.4%, with Last War third and Whiteout fourth.[122] A global slowdown and growth in Japan may be happening together, and with estimator differences on top, one series cannot settle the genre's direction. as of 2026-08

  2. Even an established developer can find that reworking the mechanic does not restore retention. On Aug 14, 2026 Supercell said mo.co — relaunched about three months earlier with seasons and free gacha pulls — 'is not performing as well as we hoped'. Its data shows the core loop goes stale quickly for most players, who then drop off, while the players who stay put in unusually long sessions, which the company reads as working for a narrow audience but not ready to scale. To free up work on larger changes, Season 4 repeats Season 1 content and Season 5 is expected to do the same, delaying new weapons; the company says shutting the game down is 'currently not in our plans' without ruling it out.[72] As the merge and 4X cases also indicate, the binding constraint increasingly sits upstream of monetization design, in retention.[49][44] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓

Gacha, loot boxes and social casino sit on the front line of gambling-style rules: India's RMG ban (still before the Supreme Court), Australia's classification and point-of-sale age checks, PEGI, Brazil, the EU DSA designation, the proposed Kids Act and EU enforcement on virtual currencies. In the US, San Diego County sued AppLovin over ads shown to children. Fees are contested through regulation and civil claims, and the UK consumer trial against Google has begun.

Australia's Sept 2024 classification reform rates loot-box games M and casino-style simulated gambling R18+. The social-casino titles topping the charts — Lightning Link Casino Slots and peers — sit closest to age-rating and gambling-disclosure rules, with further calls for odds disclosure and bringing some titles … under the gambling regime.[15][12] Demand is strong but capped by law and shadowed by addiction and reputational risk; coin-looter casino IAP was in fact down 11% YoY in H1 2026, so regulatory pressure and a demand plateau are arriving together.[49]

  2. Gacha remains one of the top-earning mechanics, but revenue and ranks swing sharply month to month: in the latest complete month, July 2026, iXBT had HoYoverse's three titles reclaim the top (Genshin ~$56.0M, HSR ~$43.1M, ZZZ ~$35.9M), whereas in June Love and Deepspace led and Wuthering Waves was ahead of all thre … e.[47][37] On top of this volatility, regulatory pressure on chance-based spend, odds-disclosure demands and addiction risk compound the exposure.[15] Pass/ad/offer models and direct-to-consumer billing can diversify part of that instability and regulatory or reputational risk, but carry their own trade-offs — lower per-user ceilings, and in the D2C case moving spend outside store-level age checks and consumer protections.[49]
    as of 2026-07
  3. Loot-box odds disclosure and predatory-monetization rules are a global, not just Australian, trend; as classification, age-gating and odds disclosure standardize, chance-dependent gacha/loot-box design loses headroom and a structural shift toward pass/offer/ad models accelerates — driven by consumer-protection argument … s around minors and vulnerable players.[15] Operators are adopting age assurance voluntarily as well (Roblox reported 57% age-check penetration in Q2 2026), so constraints on minors' spend are tightening through both statute and self-regulation.[48]
    as of 2026-06
  4. Europe's age ratings have widened from 'gacha' to live-ops design itself. PEGI announced its 'interactive risk categories' on Mar 12, 2026 and began applying them to titles newly submitted from June 2026: paid random items (loot boxes, card packs, gacha) default to PEGI 16 and can escalate to 18; time-limited or quantity-limited offers trigger PEGI 12; NFT or blockchain mechanics trigger PEGI 18; return-reward mechanics such as daily quests trigger PEGI 7, rising to PEGI 12 where non-return costs the player progress or content; and entirely unrestricted communication features without blocking or reporting trigger PEGI 18. … The scheme covers 35+ European countries including the UK, and already-classified titles are unaffected unless updated.[53][54] The consequential point is that the pass, limited-time-offer and login-streak retention designs the industry has been adopting to dilute gacha dependence are themselves now classified — the shift is not an exit from the classification perimeter but a move into a newer part of it. Under Germany's comparable USK reform, about 30% of submitted games had at least one criterion applied and roughly one in three received a higher rating.[53] Historically low-rated categories such as sports titles are expected to move up, which carries commercial consequences wherever ratings gate distribution and promotion.[54]

  5. Route-opening and minor protection have landed in the same fee table. On Aug 18, 2026 Apple published revised EU App Store terms taking effect Oct 1, 2026: 26% on native in-app purchases (15% for small developers), 20% on alternative payments, 15% on link-outs and 5% for distribution outside the App Store. … Alternative payment options may now be shown alongside Apple's own in the EU, while alternative marketplace operators face financial-standing and audit requirements and apps distributed through them still require Apple notarisation. On minors, apps for under-13s may use neither alternative payments nor link-outs, and apps aimed at under-18s require parental gating. Apple presents the package as resolving its disagreements with the European Commission; Epic calls the link-out charge a 'junk fee' that breaches the DMA.[86] On the Android side, Google Play opened third-party app stores to distribution through Play from the week after July 16, 2026, once it and Epic withdrew their motion.[89] The rising D2C share this layer tracks[79][49] is therefore advancing together with updated store terms — and in children's categories the route is being closed rather than opened.

Constraints on live-ops design now arrive through platform policy as well as statute. On Aug 26, 2026 Roblox said it will bar experiences in its Kids and Select tiers that combine continuous media feeds — short-form video, image feeds, story posts — with autoplay, infinite scroll, autoscroll or replay loops in ways that reward continued viewing, stating that 'rewarding users for consuming continuous feeds without natural stopping points is not appropriate for younger players'. … Rewarded video ads remain permitted because players start them deliberately and they carry viewing limits; non-compliant experiences lose access in those tiers until redesigned. Reporting places the change in a context of intensifying scrutiny of child safety, including Senate investigations and several lawsuits whose outcomes are undecided as of this writing.[85] As with PEGI bringing limited-time offers and login-streak design into classification[53], the regulatory focus is shifting from what is sold to how players are kept returning.

In money-staked mobile games, the largest sanction so far has come from private litigation rather than a regulator. A United States court ordered Papaya Gaming to pay Skillz about $719M in disgorgement plus roughly $10M in legal fees and costs in a false-advertising case. … On Aug 26, 2026 an Israeli court (Judge Lushi-Abudi) rejected Papaya's proposal to repay out of operating profits over six and a half years as failing to 'provide enough certainty for creditors', required a revised plan drawing on additional sources such as new investment or other capital, noted that managers and shareholders who had received dividends could contribute, and appointed an arrangement manager.[114] The sum is more than ten times the roughly $58.4M a Brazilian court ordered ten companies to pay over loot boxes.[55] Unlike prohibition (India)[31] or classification (Australia, PEGI)[15][53], this route operates as after-the-fact civil liability and can reach a scale that threatens a company's continued existence. The judgment concerns false advertising rather than the lawfulness of chance-based monetisation itself, and the two should not be conflated.

Legal pressure on the App Store now extends beyond commission levels to advertising and tracking. In September 2026 a UK collective action of about GBP2bn was filed against Apple by ATT Collective Action Limited, led by Ann Pope, a former senior director for antitrust at the Competition and Markets Authority. … The claim is that when Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency in 2021 it imposed stricter consent requirements on third-party apps than on its own services, damaging the revenue of ad-dependent developers while its own advertising business grew from $1.5bn in 2020 to $7.4bn in 2025. UK developers that earned ad revenue or ran user acquisition inside third-party iOS apps are included automatically unless they opt out.[115] Similar findings exist elsewhere: reporting notes that French and Italian authorities fined Apple a combined $284M in 2026 and that a German settlement was reached in August 2026.[115] Separately from commission regulation (the UK CMA, Japan's MSCA, the EU DMA)[57][58][96], the terms of acquisition and measurement are themselves being litigated, which touches this layer's discussion of acquisition cost.[45][60]

The UK consumer collective claim over Google Play commissions went to trial at the Competition Appeal Tribunal on Oct 6, 2026. The claim, led by Liz Coll, is valued at more than £1bn (about $1.33bn) and covers around 20 million consumers who spent on apps, in-app purchases or subscriptions on the Play Store from 2015 to July 2026. … Google and Alphabet are contesting it; a spokesperson said the claim ignores the choice Android gives consumers and that Google charges "some of the lowest fees in the market".[156] The developers' collective claim settled for £260M in September.[130]

  30. In Brazil, the president signed a decree on Oct 14, 2026 implementing the Legal Framework for the Games Industry, enacted in 2024. The framework recognises esports as a competitive sport and is reported to include safeguards for children and young people, but coverage did not detail them.[163] It is separate from the Digital ECA, which bars loot boxes for minors.[74] as of 2026-10
History · 4
  1. 🇮🇳 India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 fully bans real-money gaming, with fines up to ₹1 crore (~$120,000) and possible imprisonment. The implementing Online Gaming Rules 2026 were notified on Apr 22 and took effect May 1, 2026, with the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) handling classification, supervision and enforcement; esports and social/casual are promoted. OGAI is an attached office of MeitY headquartered in Delhi, empowered to ban money games via payment-flow restriction (Rule 19).[31][32] India's RMG-dependent unicorns (Dream11, MPL and peers) shut their money formats, a legal inflection point redirecting demand toward F2P.[16][17] Constitutional challenges (from operators including Head Digital Works (A23), Clubboom 11 and Bagheera Carrom) are before the Supreme Court, arguing the blanket ban breaches Articles 14 and 19(1)(g) and citing de facto enforcement harm (UPI restrictions, payment freezes, advertiser pullouts, layoffs); centre-versus-state jurisdictional objections have been consolidated too, and the PROGA-specific challenge (Head Digital Works v Union of India) remained pending as of mid-2026, leaving open whether real-money gaming can return at all.[38] On Aug 5, 2026 a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi accepted the petitions for final hearing and directed the parties, including the Solicitor General, to complete their pleadings. The same bench is also hearing a public interest petition from the Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change seeking action against roughly 2,000 apps said to offer gambling under the guise of social gaming or esports. The central question is whether a blanket ban that removes the skill-versus-chance distinction breaches the freedom to carry on trade under Article 19(1)(g). The bench directed the parties to complete pleadings without fixing a next date, and no ruling had issued as of Sept 5, 2026.[75] In a separate but related ruling on May 27, 2026 (State of Tamil Nadu v Junglee Games), the Supreme Court held that staking money on any game — skill or chance — amounts to 'betting and gambling', that state legislatures are competent to prohibit online money gaming, and it upheld retrospective 28% GST on RMG.[43] That hardens the durability of the ban regime, while operators argue the retrospective tax threatens the industry's survival, leaving tax and economic-policy questions entangled.[52] as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
  2. Courts have now begun enforcing directly. The statute behind it is the 'Digital ECA' (Children and Adolescents Online Safety Act, Law 15,211/2025), enacted on Sept 17, 2025, enforceable from Mar 17, 2026 with an implementing decree published the next day. It prohibits loot boxes in games aimed at minors or likely to be accessible to them, and requires providers to run effective age verification or offer a version without loot boxes.[74] Under it, on June 9, 2026 the 1st Court for Children and Youth of Brazil's Federal District ordered Valve, Riot Games, EA, Tencent, Ubisoft, Konami, Apple, Google, Sony and Nintendo to pay a combined ~R$298M (~$58.4M) over loot boxes offered to minors (reported individual figures include ~$2.8M for Riot and nearly $10M for Apple). The decision is reported to recognise collective moral damages and to order technical remedies such as odds disclosure and blocking access for minors.[55] Alongside legislative and classification regimes, an after-the-fact damages route grounded in consumer and child-protection law has become real, and coverage notes that divergent national decisions could produce a fragmented compliance environment. Reported totals vary by source — legal commentary puts the combined damages at R$333M — so no single figure should be treated as settled.[74] as of 2026-06 · superseded by ↓
  3. The move to direct-to-consumer billing is not only a commercial choice — competition law is prising the path open. In Japan the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on Dec 18, 2025 and Apple enabled third-party marketplaces and alternative payments there via iOS 26.2 on Dec 17, 2025 (10% or 21% in-app commission, plus 5% if Apple processes payment; 15% or 10% for linked web transactions; a 5% Core Technology Commission for alternative marketplaces).[58] In the UK, where Apple and Google were designated with 'strategic market status' in 2025, the CMA has proposed allowing developers to steer users to outside payment options and setting principles for 'fair and reasonable' steering fees, closing consultation on July 28, 2026; Apple objects that this is de facto price regulation and a 'highly intrusive' role in its business (it cites £46.5bn of UK App Store billings in 2025 and commissions below 3.5% of that total), while the CMA says it expects steering fees to be lower than current App Store charges.[57] The economics are already visible — Playtika earns about $1B a year, roughly 30% of revenue, through D2C.[61] But spend routed off-store does not carry store review, age assurance and refund handling with it, leaving the effective coverage of minor protection as the open question.[49][48] as of 2026-07 · superseded by ↓
  4. Enforcement of minor protection has widened from age ratings and court judgments into platform regulation and regulator-held undertakings. On Sept 1, 2026 the European Commission designated Roblox, Reddit and ChatGPT as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act. The threshold is at least 45 million monthly average users in the EU, and designated services must assess and mitigate systemic risks to users' physical and mental wellbeing, negative effects on minors, the spread of illegal content and risks to public security, electoral processes and fundamental rights, with compliance due in January 2027, four months after designation. The Commission gains supervisory and investigative powers.[116] Australia moved earlier: on Aug 20, 2026 the eSafety Commissioner secured a court-enforceable undertaking from Roblox requiring it to stop adults contacting unknown children without parental consent within three months, to make children's accounts private by default, to improve reporting and user notification, and to appoint an independent third-party auditor to assess its safety measures and age-estimation technology. If Roblox breaches it, eSafety can apply to the Federal Court for compliance orders. Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said 'Roblox cannot mark their own homework'.[108] Operator-led age assurance[48][73] and design limits in children's tiers[85] are now attached to external audit obligations and deadlines. Given how many minors use these spaces (35% of age-checked users under 13 and 38% aged 13-17)[21], this is where regulatory density is rising fastest in this layer. as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
E Environmental 3

Environmental salience is low for this demand layer, but cloud/always-online operation of top titles shifts power load into data centres (~0.44 kg CO2e per cloud-play hour; US consoles alone draw 3.9 TWh/yr), and EU battery rules are already reshaping hardware — a battery-replaceable Switch 2 revision — putting gradual longevity and e-waste pressure on the devices behind the charts.

  1. Always-online live-ops and cloud delivery of top-grossing titles shift the environmental load into data centres: industry estimates put cloud gaming at ~38% of the global online game market with ~395M users (2024), at roughly 0.44 kg CO2e per hour of cloud play. … Greenly's 2025 study has US consoles alone drawing 3.9 TWh/yr (1.6Mt CO2e; 6.5 TWh and 2.6Mt including connected TVs) — as physical media disappears, the footprint relocates rather than shrinks.[40][41]
    as of 2025-11
  2. Device-longevity regulation is reaching the hardware that hosts the chart-toppers: with the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 mandating user-replaceable integrated batteries from Feb 18, 2027, Nintendo announced in June 2026 that it is preparing a compliant Switch 2 revision for Europe with a replaceable battery (model numbers carrying an 'OSM' code). … Design changes that curb upgrade churn and e-waste are becoming a standard platform response; the obligation applies from Feb 18, 2027 and had not yet taken effect as of September 2026.[42]
    as of 2026-06
  3. Device-side resource efficiency is being written into distribution conditions. On Aug 27, 2026 Google said Google Play's quality standards will add dynamic memory, bitmap memory and DEX code optimisation from February 2027, with non-compliant apps facing reduced visibility and publishing capability rather than removal.[91] The stated aims are lower memory consumption and better device performance, not environmental benefit. … But because it tends to extend the useful life of low-specification handsets, it can be tracked — like the EU Battery Regulation-compliant, battery-replaceable Switch 2 revision[42] — as a technical requirement touching replacement cycles and e-waste. No quantified effect has been published, so nothing stronger can be claimed.
