Measurement still runs SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit side by side, Apple's alternative ATT prompt becomes mandatory in five EU markets with iOS 27.2, and third-party cookies persist. Ad buying is consolidating into AI bidding and agents, and price ceilings shrink through new campaign set-ups, though agent-trading protocols have not reached scale; auction charging is under regulator and court review. ChatGPT ads run in more than 60 countries including Japan. Apple's fees are now nearly equal in Japan and the EU, but Japanese use of alternative marketplaces sits at 5.9%. Rules on minors, gacha, wagering ads and AI creative are tightening, and MIXI touches each through FamilyAlbum, Monster Strike and PointsBet.

Review pass. Corrected Microsoft's Max CPC change to new campaigns from 1 October only, fixed the EU-Japan fee comparison (Apple IAP is 26% in both), and replaced signals the evidence did not support (rising UA costs, rising organic share, rising Apple Ads prices, paid-monetization UA in India). … Recorded the EU terms taking effect and Monster Strike's 13th-anniversary campaigns.[89][122][70][134]

On 16 September Apple announced an alternative ATT prompt from iOS 27.2, mandatory in five EU markets, ending the scope dispute. … ChatGPT ads reached 63 countries, including Japan since 22 June, with AppsFlyer and Adjust attribution. The Google ad-tech remedy became a worldwide six-year decree, and $100m of TikTok's COPPA settlement hinges on a court. Apple's single EU business terms start on 1 October.[120][123][124][128][126][121]

The last two weeks moved the mechanics of ad trading itself. On 31 August 2026 the FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon for deception, alleging it described a second-price auction while applying an undisclosed soft reserve that charged advertisers their full bid on 79.1% of clicks in 2024 (Amazon denies overcharging). … On 2 September Judge Brinkema refused to break up AdX and DFP in the Google ad-tech case but ordered real-time AdX bid data shared with rival ad servers, unified pricing rules ended, first-look and last-look advantages banned, and six years of monitoring. On 4 September The Trade Desk cut about 15% of staff (~575 roles) with Q3 guidance pointing to a 12% revenue decline, and Nielsen changed seven elements of the US TV currency at once on 31 August as ad-supported viewing fell to 71.5% of total viewing in the April-June quarter, from 72.8% in Q1. Generative creative now sits under EU AI Act Article 50, enforceable from 2 August 2026, with Dutch trade body VIA Nederland publishing a four-trigger mapping on 5 September. On MIXI, the publicly verifiable facts are FamilyAlbum's creator-video UA and 30m users, the 'FamilyAlbum Family Partner' brand pilot, the single-purchase sticker option added on 3 September, Monster Strike's IP collaborations, large gacha campaigns and widening web-shop payment options, the Runway partnership and new CAIO role, and its ownership of Australian bookmaker PointsBet (66.43% acquired September 2025), now consolidated. Money moving to video does not mean inventory is growing: US ad-supported viewing fell to 71.5% of total viewing in the April-June quarter, and independent DSP The Trade Desk cut about 15% of staff with Q3 guidance pointing to a 12% decline. How auction charges are set is itself now the subject of an FTC suit. At the turn of September 2026 ad trading itself became the legal battleground: on 2 September Judge Brinkema refused to break up AdX and DFP but ordered Google's auction rules rewritten, and on 31 August the FTC and 22 states sued Amazon over how it charges advertisers.

  1. 2026-08-31 A quarter in which the premises of measurement, distribution and ad surfaces all moved. In measurement, Germany's Federal Cartel Office closed its ATT proceeding on 17 August 2026 after Apple committed to neutralize the consent prompt in Germany (removing the gap between its own and third-party requests, and letting publishers merge Apple's prompt with data-protection consent); implementation is due within four months of service and the commitments run seven years under an independent trustee. In distribution, six months after Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act (fully in force 18 December 2025), MCF and seven other bodies published a survey on 26 August 2026 showing only 5.9% of responding developers using alternative marketplaces and 8.8% using alternative in-app payments, quantifying the gap between what the law opened and what is used. In the US, third-party stores became distributable inside Google Play on 22 July 2026, Aptoide arrived as the first on 10 August, and a judge ordered Google on 14 August to strip friction from the install path. On ad surfaces, ChatGPT ads spread from the US (February 2026) to Europe (August) and India (27 August), while its default bidding became 'maximize results' with no stated CPA/CPC/ROAS guarantee, and Microsoft Advertising retires Max CPC caps on 1 October 2026. Agent-driven ad ops widened from TikTok to X Ads MCP, which exposes ten write-capable tools. On regulation, TikTok settled a children's privacy suit for $400m (21 August 2026); Australia's under-16 social ban still left 81% of under-16s using platforms at three months; US state app age-verification laws and Apple's Declared Age Range API now shape the family-app funnel; and gacha/loot-boxes face PEGI's minimum age-16 rating, Brazil's under-18 ban, Korean probability-disclosure enforcement and the EU's Digital Fairness Act, which had still not been tabled as of 5 September 2026. Betting advertising tightened as Australia passed the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill 2026 on 20 August, and Japan's public-racing advertising guideline capped points rebates at 1% as a rule and 5% at most. On measurement, Google completed the global rollout of a Search Console AI-features performance report on 31 August, though it carries no click or query data. Some visibility arrived: Google completed the global rollout of a Search Console AI-features performance report on 31 August 2026, without click or query data. Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026, making disclosure of AI-generated creative an operating requirement.
  2. 2026-06-30 Privacy Sandbox's shutdown keeps third-party cookies alive, and SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit saw no significant WWDC26 change, so dual-running continues.

So What? (Implications for MIXI)Group-wide implications are collected in Implications for MIXI →

  1. NOW

Creator-UGC growth and disclosure enforcement advance together, and app UA is now inside the enforcement perimeter

As the influencer economy heads toward $34-40bn, disclosure enforcement has reached app acquisition work. Japan issued orders on 6 August 2026 against the two operators of a photo-editing app, and US FTC enforcement and Australia’s first ACCC penalty run the same way, placing monitoring duties and substantiation responsibility on advertisers. The improvements reported for FamilyAlbum’s creator videos come from co-marketing material, not independent verification. Decisions about UGC weight are judged on three things: how verifiable the effect is, the disclosure-operations cost in each market, and the penalty exposure if labeling fails.[20][9][96][33][37]

  2. WATCH

Monster Strike's anniversary and collab pushes run on free pulls and rewarded sharing on X, where premiums law is enforced

Toward its 13th anniversary Monster Strike ran a gacha of up to 200 pulls, 13 days of free 10-pulls and an event where sharing results on X entered players in an e-gift draw[103][132][79], and a collab offered up to ¥10,000 in Eraberu Pay as prizes[116]. In August 2026 Japan applied the Premiums and Representations Act to app operators that paid X posters in e-gifts without an ad label[96]. The path that brings lapsed players back and creates buzz meets scrutiny through the form of its campaigns, not through gacha pricing.

  3. NOW

Public-racing rebate caps put a regulatory ceiling on the acquisition lever for TIPSTAR and Chariloto

Japan's 2026 advertising guideline for public racing caps points rebates on betting services at 1% for ordinary races and 5% for special races, and ends spend-linked tier programs[97]. MIXI runs keirin and auto-race betting through TIPSTAR and Chariloto[98]. The rebate budget that served as the main lever for acquisition and return visits now has a regulatory ceiling, so rebates can no longer set one betting site apart from another. The rule rests on addiction policy, and public sources show no sign of it loosening.

  4. WATCH

Monster Strike's purchase path moves through its own web shop, not the new alternative channels, while Apple IAP costs 26% in total

Under Japan's MSCA, a 30-developer survey puts use of alternative marketplaces at 5.9% and alternative in-app payment at 8.8%[83]. Monster Strike's purchase path moves through its web shop instead: on 6 August it added Minna Bank payments with 0.5 extra points per ¥100[115]. In Japan a purchase through Apple IAP costs 26% in total (21% commission plus 5% processing), against 21% with alternative payment[70]. The effective burden therefore turns on the share of purchases made off-store, which MIXI does not disclose.

  5. WATCH

On FamilyAlbum's paid-acquisition surfaces, bid-price control is leaving the advertiser step by step

FamilyAlbum uses TikTok creator video ads for overseas acquisition[20]. TikTok extended automated optimization through Smart+[31], and ChatGPT ads' default bidding guarantees no CPA. Microsoft stops accepting Max CPC on automated-bidding campaigns created from 1 October 2026, while existing campaigns keep it[89]. In shopping-app data, CPI moved in opposite directions, +80% in the UK and Ireland and −57% in India[91]. Cost levels can only be checked through regional mix and a company's own measurement.

  1. LONG

UA-cost inflation raises the relative weight of organic inflow, yet the sources do not agree on what unit costs even are

Against $109bn of app-marketing spend, the headline CPI ranges from a $1.08 median (Adjust shopping apps, published 27 August 2026) to a $2.24 iOS mean and adjoe's $5+ upper bound. Because app category, mean versus median and period all differ, external figures cannot be adopted as internal thresholds. Regional differences are clearer and sometimes point in opposite directions: UK and Ireland $3.85 (+80%), US $3.28 (+22%), India $0.10 (-57%). Products with invite and word-of-mouth inflow face different blended-CPA math, but FamilyAlbum discloses 30m cumulative users worldwide without splitting organic from paid, so the invite loop's contribution cannot be quantified externally. What remains decidable is the movement of a company's own consistently measured costs and the shift in its regional mix.[1][2][21][91]

  2. NOW

The ATT antitrust dispute ended in commitments, moving measurement uncertainty from legal to post-implementation measurement

On 17 August 2026 Germany's Federal Cartel Office closed its case on Apple's commitments to neutralize the consent dialog, allow it to be combined with data-protection consent, and widen the room to explain personalised advertising. Implementation is due within four months of service, the commitments run seven years, and an independent trustee monitors them; reports differ on whether the scope is Germany or Europe. France's fine is under appeal and the bid to suspend ATT was refused. Meanwhile SKAN 4 and AdAttributionKit saw no significant WWDC26 update and continue side by side, and Privacy Sandbox's shutdown kept cookies alive. The variables that now govern measurement accuracy are the observed opt-in rate and signal volume after the prompt changes, whether AAK and SKAN run in parallel, and how developed first-party data and media-mix modeling are.[81][82][7][78][3]

  3. NOW

Creator-UGC growth and disclosure enforcement advance together, and app UA is now inside the enforcement perimeter

As the influencer economy heads toward $34-40bn, Japan's stealth-marketing rules produced orders on 6 August 2026 against the two operators of the photo-editing app SNOW, which reporting says paid at least 72 influencers, including with electronic gift vouchers, without requiring an advertising label. US FTC enforcement and Australia's first ACCC penalty (March 2026) run in the same direction, placing monitoring duties and substantiation responsibility on advertisers. For FamilyAlbum's creator videos, a TikTok For Business case study reports CPA, CVR and CTR improvements, but that is co-marketing material, not independent verification. Decisions about UGC weight are judged on three things: how verifiable the effect is, the disclosure-operations cost in each market, and the penalty exposure if labeling fails.[20][9][19][96][33][37]

  4. WATCH

Discovery moved to AI assistants, and the same surface became biddable across the US, Europe and India

In 2026 ASO, discovery via ChatGPT, Gemini and Apple Intelligence is growing, so beyond metadata, reviews, CPPs (35 to 70) and rating recency, visibility inside LLMs becomes a discovery variable. OpenAI launched ads in the US in February 2026, expanded across Europe in August and reached India on 27 August (100m+ weekly actives, ~50 brands, WPP and Omnicom as agency partners, a ₹725 daily minimum). From mid-August 2026, however, the default bid strategy for new ad groups is 'maximize results', and OpenAI's own documentation states it guarantees no CPA, CPC or ROAS. Apple Ads' multi-slot search began Japan-early on 3 March 2026. Measurement did not move in only one direction. Google completed the global rollout of a Search Console AI-features performance report on 31 August 2026, so impressions, URLs, countries, devices and dates are now available — but there is no click data and no query data, and AI impressions stay folded into overall Web Search totals. That visibility is confined to the web; no equivalent public instrument exists for recommendations inside app stores or assistants. With the paid surface also guaranteeing no efficiency target, the design of verification is itself the open question here.[22][8][73][74][88][89][108]

  5. WATCH

Minor-protection rules show a gap between design and measured effect while becoming a technical requirement in the funnel

Australia banned under-16 social media use, yet a government evaluation three months in found 81% still using platforms (86% before), with many never age-checked; platforms urge caution about early data, so the assessment is contested. In the US, Texas SB2420 has been enforced since 4 June 2026 and the Supreme Court denied emergency applications on 6 July, though the merits continue; Utah is in force, Louisiana is pushed to July 2027 and California applies from January 2027, so requirements and timing diverge by state. At the same time Apple's Declared Age Range API is available worldwide, handling age verification and PermissionKit parental consent from iOS 26.2 and significant-update acknowledgement from iOS 26.4. For family and kids-adjacent products this means both the prospect of tighter enforcement in response to weak measured compliance and a rework of conversion design as age bands and parental consent enter the path from first launch to purchase.[68][17][99][35][66][67][34][100]

  6. NOW

Revenue structures funneled through gacha carry regulatory and social-scrutiny downside

PEGI rates new titles with paid random items minimum age 16 from June 2026 submissions, Brazil banned sales to minors from March 2026, Korea has stepped up enforcement of probability disclosure, and the EU is weighing everything from an outright ban to mandatory parental consent under the Digital Fairness Act (no proposal tabled as of 5 September 2026; application no earlier than 2029). Japan relies mainly on self-regulation, so direct constraints at home are limited, but Monster Strike's revenue leans on repeated limited gacha and IP collaborations, and August 2026 again featured free-pull campaigns on the scale of 'up to 200 pulls' plus share incentives. Region-specific ratings, age verification, spending caps and probability disclosure become preconditions for how campaigns are surfaced and where titles can ship. The regulatory debate turns precisely on the point that criticism about addiction and overspending extends beyond paid gacha to mass free-pull supply and share incentives.[64][51][47][48][56][79][103]

  7. WATCH

For betting-adjacent products, both reachable inventory and acquisition budget are being narrowed by rule

Australia passed the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill 2026 on 20 August 2026; reporting says bans on wagering ads during live sport, in venues and on uniforms, tighter inducement rules and an operator-levied advertising opt-out register phase in from 2027. In Japan, the public-racing advertising guideline caps betting-service points rebates at 1% for ordinary races and 5% for special races and ended purchase-linked tier schemes. MIXI operates TIPSTAR and Chariloto domestically and took 66.43% of PointsBet in September 2025, so it sits across both regimes. PointsBet's CEO argues the rules may advantage unlicensed offshore operators, while government analysis was reported to estimate only a ~0.8% reduction in spending, so neither the benefit nor the side effect is empirically settled. The implication is that CAC and channel choice in this area are increasingly determined by what is permitted rather than by price competition.[92][93][94][95][97][98]

  8. LONG

India's RMG ban makes F2P plus ads plus regional-language creators the market premise, while the pivot itself proves hard

With PROGA in force from 1 May 2026 and heavy GST, paid RMG is closed off; on 5 August 2026 the Supreme Court agreed to a final hearing on constitutionality but set no date and granted no stay, so the ban is the working premise. What remains is a large free-to-play base — ~568m gamers, Q1 2026 IAP +33%, ad-supported titles ~46% of revenue — and, on Adjust's measurement, an extremely low CPI of $0.10 (-57% YoY). ChatGPT ads also launched in India on 27 August 2026. The record on pivoting, however, is poor: Dream11 announced a move to a second-screen sports-entertainment platform in December 2025 and by August 2026 reporting described it as no longer a gaming app. MIXI holds a $50m India CVC set up in August 2023, so any involvement rests on low CPI, ad-revenue models and regional-language creator UGC. Low ARPU, legal volatility and the difficulty of pivoting all bite at once.[24][27][28][29][26][69][91][88][104]

  9. NOW

Both ad buying and creative production consolidate into AI while the price-ceiling control is being withdrawn

After TikTok's MCP server, X published X Ads MCP in August 2026, exposing 23 tools of which ten can write to and spend from live accounts (created campaigns arrive paused, activation needs a separate call, tokens expire in about two hours). PMax, AI Max and Advantage+ make automated optimization the default; ChatGPT ads' default bidding guarantees no efficiency target, and Microsoft Advertising retires Max CPC ceilings on 1 October 2026. On the production side, MIXI announced its Runway partnership on 30 June 2026 (the 21-days-to-3 figures are company-reported) and created a CAIO role on 1 August 2026. As control on the buying side declines and price ceilings disappear, results depend on the volume and quality of creative fed in, the supply of first-party data, and permissioning, auditing and recovery design. Claims about automation gains tend to come from company statements and vendor case studies, so independent verification design is the open question. September 2026 reporting adds a second layer: at agencies whose agents actually buy media, inference tokens show up as a new variable cost, and in-house controls — daily caps, audit logs, drift detection — are running ahead of any pricing convention. A KPMG survey fielded April-May 2026 found 49% of organizations narrowed, delayed or paused AI deployments when cost exceeded value while only 7% reported established ROI, so whether automation pays depends on operating scale and performance level.[31][90][15][16][89][75][76][109]

  10. WATCH

In the US, the CTV and retail-media shift advances alongside GPC mandates and COPPA enforcement

US ad dollars are moving to CTV (~$37.95bn in 2026) and retail media, with 49.9% of creator spend on nano and micro-creators, while ~20 state privacy laws and 12-state GPC mandates tighten in-app targeting. TikTok's $400m COPPA settlement on 21 August 2026 — no admission of liability, with commitments to stronger age controls and parental oversight — shows that targeting built on minors' data is a primary federal enforcement area. Reach beyond mobile social widens, but CTV attributes installs less directly, and honoring GPC plus distinguishing age bands brings migration costs toward consent-based measurement. US allocation decisions therefore surface as a trade-off between wider reach and both weaker measurement and heavier compliance. The destination markets are not uniformly expanding, though. On Nielsen's numbers ad-supported viewing fell to 71.5% of total viewing in April-June 2026, from 72.8% in Q1 and 74.2% in Q4 2025, so streaming is taking share of a shrinking pool; seven simultaneous methodology changes on 31 August also make it impossible to isolate what drove a ratings shift, and the autumn move to DASH estimates is expected to break quarter-on-quarter comparability. The intermediation layer is uneven too: The Trade Desk cut about 15% of staff (~575 roles) effective 4 September 2026 with Q3 guidance implying a 12% revenue decline. Inventory growth, currency continuity and intermediary health are three separate things to check.[40][42][39][43][41][87][110][107]

  11. WATCH

App distribution is multi-track by law, yet actual use in Japan sits at 5.9%

Japan's MSCA (fully in force 18 December 2025) allows alternative marketplaces, external purchase links and alternative payments on iOS, with fees of 21% App Store commission (10% for small businesses), 5% Apple payment processing, 15% on out-of-app offers (10% small business) and a 5% Core Technology Commission for alternative-marketplace distribution. Yet a survey published on 26 August 2026 by MCF and seven other bodies (30 developers, 34 responses) found only 5.9% using alternative marketplaces and 8.8% using alternative in-app payments, with roughly 90% of apps carrying external payment links rejected by Apple. The eight bodies asked the JFTC to state explicitly whether the terms comply and to issue concrete orders. In the US the Play Catalog Access Program opened on 22 July 2026, Aptoide shipped as the first store on 10 August, and on 14 August a judge was reported to have ordered Google to remove friction from the install path. Legal opening and economic movement are different things: fee-structure options have widened, but even discounting the small sample, effective switching remains limited today.[70][71][72][83][84][85][86]

  12. WATCH

What advertisers actually pay has become a legal question, at the same time as price ceilings are withdrawn

On 2 September 2026 Judge Brinkema refused to break up AdX and DFP in the Google ad-tech case but ordered real-time AdX bid data shared with rival ad servers, unified pricing rules ended, first-look and last-look advantages banned on open-web display inventory, and six years of behavioral monitoring. The day before, on 31 August, the FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon for deception over sponsored-products advertising, alleging it described a second-price auction while applying an undisclosed reserve afterwards, and that the full-bid charging rate reached 79.1% in 2024; Amazon denies it. In the same window, ChatGPT Ads made 'maximize results' the default for new ad groups while stating it guarantees no efficiency target, and Microsoft Advertising retires Max CPC ceilings on automated bidding on 1 October 2026. Buyers have fewer levers to name a price directly, even as accountability for pricing is being tested by regulators and courts. The implication is that the field is shifting the burden of judging unit-price reasonableness away from published external figures and onto the logs, measurement and experiments a buyer can run itself. The remedy's effect plays out over a six-year monitoring period, and the Amazon allegations await adjudication.[105][106][89][16]

  13. WATCH

The constraint on AI-generated creative has moved from how much can be made to how it must be labeled

Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026, requiring interactive AI to identify itself, synthetic media capable of misleading viewers to be disclosed, AI-generated text on politics, health, safety or fundamental rights to be disclosed, and in-house builders to apply machine-readable marking; on 5 September 2026 the Dutch body VIA Nederland published a four-trigger mapping for agencies, and the ACCC lists deceptive AI-generated content among its 2025-26 priorities. Measured audience tolerance points a different way from the disclosure duties: FreeWheel's research published on 5 September 2026 (2,496 viewers and 226 buyers, fielded November 2025 and April 2026) found 48% of buyers expected viewers to dislike AI-made commercials while only 10% of viewers said they did. MIXI reports shorter production cycles from its Runway partnership (Monster Strike video from 21 days to 3, for example), but those figures are company-stated and unverified. The implication is that per-asset disclosure judgements, record-keeping and market-specific labeling now bind earlier in practice than the technical headroom to produce more.[111][37][112][75][76]

  14. LONG

UA-cost inflation raises the relative weight of organic inflow, yet the sources do not agree on what unit costs even are

Headline CPI runs from a $1.08 median to a $2.24 iOS mean and an upper bound above $5, across sources that differ in app category, in mean versus median and in period. Regional spreads are wider still and do not even point the same way. External figures therefore cannot be adopted as internal thresholds. FamilyAlbum discloses 30m cumulative users worldwide without splitting organic from paid, so the invite loop’s contribution cannot be quantified from outside. What remains decidable is a company’s own consistently measured cost trend and the shift in its regional mix.[1][2][21][91]

  15. NOW

The ATT antitrust dispute ended in commitments, moving measurement uncertainty from legal to post-implementation measurement

Germany’s Federal Cartel Office closed its case on 17 August 2026 on Apple’s commitments to neutralize the consent dialog and widen the room to explain personalised advertising. Implementation is due within four months of service, and reports still differ on whether the scope is Germany or Europe. The uncertainty has moved from what is lawful to what the rebuilt prompt measures. The variables that now govern measurement accuracy are the opt-in rate and signal volume after the change ships, whether AdAttributionKit and SKAN 4 run in parallel, and how developed first-party data and media-mix modeling are.[81][82][7][78]

  16. WATCH

Minor-protection rules show a gap between design and measured effect while becoming a technical requirement in the funnel

Three months into Australia’s under-16 ban, 81% of under-16s were still using platforms, so the rule and the measured effect diverge. In the US, requirements and timing split by state, with California applying from January 2027. At the same time Apple’s Declared Age Range API carries age verification and parental consent, making age assurance a technical requirement in the funnel. For family and kids-adjacent products this brings both the prospect of tighter enforcement in response to weak measured compliance and a rework of conversion design as age bands and consent enter the path from first launch to purchase.[68][99][35][66][100]

  17. NOW

Revenue structures funneled through gacha carry regulatory and social-scrutiny downside

Rules on paid random items are advancing region by region. PEGI rates new titles with such items minimum age 16, Brazil bans sales to minors, Korea has stepped up enforcement of probability disclosure, and the EU is weighing options under the Digital Fairness Act. Japan relies mainly on self-regulation, so direct constraints at home are limited, but Monster Strike’s revenue leans on repeated limited gacha and IP collaborations. Region-specific ratings, age verification, spending caps and probability disclosure become preconditions for how campaigns are surfaced and where titles ship, and criticism can extend to mass free-pull supply and share incentives.[64][51][47][56][103]

  18. WATCH

For betting-adjacent products, both reachable inventory and acquisition budget are being narrowed by rule

Australia’s amendments of 20 August 2026 ban wagering ads during live sport, in venues and on uniforms, and phase in an advertising opt-out register from 2027. In Japan, the public-racing advertising guideline caps points rebates on betting services. MIXI operates TIPSTAR and Chariloto at home and holds PointsBet in Australia, so it sits across both regimes. Neither the benefit of these rules nor their side effects are empirically settled, but CAC and channel choice in this area are increasingly determined by what is permitted rather than by price competition.[92][97][95][98]

  19. NOW

Both ad buying and creative production consolidate into AI while the price-ceiling control is being withdrawn

Both ad buying and creative production are consolidating into AI. Agents can write to and spend from live accounts over MCP, automated optimization is the default, and the price-ceiling control is being withdrawn. On the production side MIXI announced its Runway partnership and a new CAIO role. As control on the buying side declines, results depend on the volume and quality of creative fed in, the supply of first-party data, and permissioning, auditing and recovery design. Once agents actually run, inference tokens appear as a new variable cost, so whether automation pays depends on operating scale and performance level.[90][15][89][75][76][109]

  20. WATCH

App distribution is multi-track by law, yet actual use in Japan sits at 5.9%

Japan’s MSCA opened iOS to alternative marketplaces, external purchase links and alternative payments, widening the fee-structure options. Yet an industry survey published on 26 August 2026 found only 5.9% using alternative marketplaces and 8.8% using alternative in-app payments. In the US the Play Catalog Access Program opened and a first store shipped through it. Legal opening and economic movement are different things: even discounting the small sample, effective switching remains limited today.[70][83][84][72][85]

  21. NOW

The ATT remedy is now a defined prompt change in five EU markets, moving measurement uncertainty to post-launch data

On 16 September 2026 Apple announced that from iOS 27.2 an alternative ATT prompt arrives in the EU and is the only version in Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Romania. It adds symmetric Allow and Reject buttons and a yearly re-ask after refusal, settling the dispute over scope. Measurement accuracy now turns on opt-in rates and signal volume in those five markets, parallel AdAttributionKit and SKAN 4 operation, and how developed first-party data and media-mix modeling are.[120][119][7][78]

  22. WATCH

Monster Strike's purchase path is moving through its own web shop rather than the new alternative channels

Under Japan's MSCA, use of alternative marketplaces in a 30-developer survey and alternative in-app payments sits at 5.9% and 8.8%[83]. Monster Strike's purchase path is moving through its web shop instead: on 6 August 2026 the Monster Strike Web Shop added Minna Bank payments with 0.5 extra points per ¥100[115]. The effective burden of the 21% App Store commission[70] therefore turns on the share of purchases made off-store, which MIXI does not disclose.

On FamilyAlbum's paid-acquisition surfaces, bid-price control is leaving the advertiser

FamilyAlbum uses TikTok creator video ads for overseas acquisition[20]. Across paid-acquisition surfaces, price control is leaving the advertiser. TikTok extended automated optimization through Smart+[31], Microsoft removes the Max CPC cap on automated bidding on 1 October 2026, and ChatGPT ads' default bidding guarantees no CPA[89]. In shopping-app data, CPI moved in opposite directions, +80% in the UK and Ireland and −57% in India[91]. The level of acquisition cost can only be checked through regional mix and a company's own measurement.

State and regulator intervention governs whether channels and distribution routes stay available. Five European competition proceedings produced an EU-wide ATT prompt change, and part of TikTok's children's-privacy settlement now awaits a court. Australia's under-16 social ban and its measured effect, US state app age-verification laws, India's real-money-gaming ban, how Japan's smartphone-competition law operates, and Australia's wagering-ad rules all rewrite acquisition and monetization assumptions.

Australia enforced the world-first under-16 social-media ban on 10 December 2025 (fines up to ~A$50m), and ~4.7m accounts were removed within days. A government evaluation about three months in found 81% of under-16s still using restricted platforms (86% before the ban), with daily use falling only from 60% to 58%. … Existing accounts could widely be retained or recreated, and about half of the minors who kept accounts said they were never age-checked. The government defends the law and is weighing tougher penalties, while platforms have urged caution about drawing conclusions from early data, so the assessment is contested. Platform-side enforcement continues, and Meta was reported in August 2026 to have deactivated a large number of Australian teen accounts. The premise that social platforms can no longer reach minors therefore does not hold empirically: channel design for family and kids-adjacent products has to account both for the gap between the regulatory framing and observed usage, and for the risk of tighter enforcement ahead.[17][18][68][99]

US app-store age-verification laws are advancing and being litigated at the same time. Texas SB2420 was due to take effect on 1 January 2026 but was enjoined in December 2025 on First Amendment grounds; the Fifth Circuit stayed that injunction on 28 May 2026, so enforcement began on 4 June 2026, and on 6 July 2026 the Supreme Court denied two emergency applications while leaving the merits to the Fifth Circuit. … Utah's act took effect 7 May 2026, Louisiana's was pushed from 1 July 2026 to July 2027, California's Digital Age Assurance Act applies from 1 January 2027, and Alabama enacted its own version in 2026. The FTC issued a policy statement on 25 February 2026 encouraging age-verification technology under COPPA. These cover all apps, not just kids' apps, so family and kids-adjacent products must handle age-verification and parental-consent APIs, while the requirements themselves remain in flux through litigation.[35][34][66][67]

India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA) received presidential assent on 22 August 2025 and took effect on 1 May 2026, banning all real-money games regardless of skill versus chance, along with their advertising, sponsorship and payment processing. … Dream11, MPL, PokerBaazi, WinZo and others shut down RMG operations immediately on assent (Dream11 reported losing ~95% of revenue overnight). On 27 May 2026 the Supreme Court held that staking money on an uncertain outcome is gambling with no Article 19(1)(g) protection regardless of skill, and validated ~₹2.5tn in GST demands (28% on the full face value of deposits); a September 2025 GST reform created a 40% demerit slab.[24][25][63][52]

MIXI set up a $50m India-focused CVC in August 2023, so participation in that market would rest on F2P and ad revenue rather than RMG.[69][55][104][24][29]

The eight bodies asked the JFTC to state explicitly whether the new terms comply and to issue concrete cease-and-desist orders rather than continue confidential dialogue. 1. 🇺🇸 The TikTok US divestiture closed on 22 January 2026, moving the US business into a TikTok USDS joint venture led by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX (ByteDance retains 19.9%). The ad channel is operating, but governance and compliance uncertainty persists. A suit filed in the DC Court of Appeals on 5 March 2026 argues the JV approval violated the 2024 divestiture law; in May Sen. Markey demanded disclosure of the algorithm-licensing contracts by 18 June and those contracts have not been published. On 17 July 2026 the DOJ said the current app could be installed on federal government devices, and on 11 August the OMB was reported to have lifted the government-device ban. Separately, on 21 August 2026 TikTok agreed to pay $400m to settle the DOJ's Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) case, which alleged it let under-13s use the platform and collected their personal data without parental consent for targeted advertising; without admitting liability, TikTok agreed to stronger age controls, additional child safeguards and parental oversight tools. Reporting describes it as the largest US children's-privacy settlement to date. For advertisers, the channel is usable but the handling of minors' data and the targeting specification may still change.[10][20][44][46][65][87] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  2. The ATT antitrust proceeding has been resolved in Germany. After a probe running since 2022, preliminary findings on 13 February 2025, a market test from December 2025 and objections in March 2026 from bodies including ZAW and BDZV that the proposed remedies were insufficient, the Federal Cartel Office closed the case on 17 August 2026. Apple committed to align the consent requests for its own services and for third-party apps by removing potentially discouraging symbols and wording, to keep the prompt neutral in content, wording and layout, to let publishers combine Apple's consent request with the consent required under data-protection law, and to give publishers more scope to explain what personalised advertising means for their offering. Implementation is due within four months of service of the decision, after testing with publishers; the commitments last seven years and an independent trustee monitors them. MacRumors reports the changes apply in Germany only, while other coverage frames them as European in effect, so the scope is not reported consistently. In France, Apple is appealing the €150m fine of 31 March 2025, and on 20 January 2026 a French court refused to suspend ATT. The iOS consent UI is set to become more neutral, but the effect on opt-in rates and measurement signal volume cannot be measured until it ships.[5][6][53][58][80][81][82] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓

UA costs rest on inconsistent bases, and per-channel price gaps plus the growing influencer economy shift paid-acquisition math. Digital is a majority of Japan's ad spend; US dollars move to CTV and retail media while ad-supported viewing shrinks; India is low-price and Australia high-price with wagering inventory shrinking. ChatGPT ads are a paid surface in 60+ countries including Japan, though published scale figures disagree widely.

  1. Global app-marketing spend reached $109bn in 2025 (~$78bn on UA). Headline unit costs differ sharply by source. Business of Apps-derived figures put 2026 CPI at ~$2.24 on iOS and ~$1.12 on Android, rising to ~$3.40 on iOS in Europe. … adjoe puts the 2026 range at roughly $1.5-$5+ on iOS and $1.5-$4+ on Android, with North America highest. Adjust's shopping-app benchmarks published on 27 August 2026 (covering January 2024 to June 2026) instead show a global median CPI of $1.08 (from $1.06), with extreme regional spread: UK and Ireland $3.85 (+80% YoY), US $3.28 (+22%), DACH $3.13 (-1%), France $1.73 (+24%) and India $0.10 (-57%). CPM is $3.19 globally (+32% over two years) and $20.54 in the US. The three sources differ in app category (all apps versus shopping apps), in mean versus median, and in period, so no single 'true' CPI can be established from public data. The practical implication is that the movement of a company's own consistently measured costs and its regional mix matter more than comparing absolute published numbers.[1][2][23][91]
    as of 2026-08
  2. Per-channel CPI is hard to compare directly because published figures use different bases. Cheaper channels also attract competitors fastest, so blended CPA depends on both the organic share and the channel mix. … Adjust's shopping-app data reports the paid-to-organic ratio rising 26% in six months to 0.72, so at least in that category reliance on paid grew. Concentration in a single channel amplifies exposure to price swings, while diversification raises the fixed cost of creative production and measurement.[2][91]

  3. Influencer marketing reached ~$32.55bn in 2025 and is projected at ~$34-40bn for 2026, with ~87% of brands planning budget increases. Whether advertisers can verify what they actually pay moved to the foreground with regulatory action at the end of August 2026. On 31 August the FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon over its sponsored-products advertising, alleging deception. … Per the complaint, Amazon told advertisers it ran a generalized second-price auction — charging at the runner-up bid — while applying an undisclosed 'soft reserve price' afterwards through a mechanism staff internally called an 'invented auction participant' or 'proxy second price'. The share of clicks charged at the advertiser's full bid, the first-price rate, is alleged to have risen from about 4% in late 2020 to 30-40% in 2021, about 70% in 2022 and 79.1% in 2024, with roughly $20bn of hidden surcharges across some 1.2m US advertising customers. Amazon denies overcharging, saying inflation-adjusted average costs were flat, conversion rates rose more than 24%, and advertisers saved over $8bn between 2021 and 2025 through relevance-based ranking. The merits are for the court, but the structural point — that a buyer cannot verify unit prices from outside the platform — runs in the same direction as default AI bidding and the withdrawal of price ceilings.[106]

An independent demand-side platform can contract even while CTV grows. In results reported on 6 August 2026, The Trade Desk's April-June revenue grew just 3% year on year — its slowest since the opening months of the pandemic — missing analyst consensus by $37.6m. … Effective 4 September 2026 the company cut about 575 roles, roughly 15% of a ~3,843-person workforce across 21 countries, with Q3 guidance implying a 12% revenue decline, which would be its first annual contraction. Reporting attributes the weakness to soft consumer-packaged-goods and automotive spending and to two large buying groups exiting programs; competition from AI or the large platforms is not part of the company's own stated explanation. Rising CTV spend and the health of the independent intermediation layer are therefore separate measures: platform-direct buying and retail media can squeeze the middle even as the inventory pool grows.[107][40]

India's mobile-gaming market was ~$3.5bn in 2025 with gamers projected near 724m by 2029. Post-RMG-ban, ad-revenue models dominate: in-app and in-game advertising is projected to grow from $584m (2024) to ~$1.2bn (2030), and ad-supported titles made up ~46% of 2025 revenue. … UPI micropayments are lifting IAP too — India's Q1 2026 in-app spend topped $300m, +33% YoY. Acquisition prices are among the lowest anywhere: Adjust's shopping-app data puts India's CPI at $0.10, down 57% YoY. But low ARPU, the loss of paid monetization under the RMG ban, and the difficulty of pivoting (Dream11's move to second-screen sports entertainment, for example) cap the economics. Australia's digital ad spend reaches ~$16.88bn in 2026 (12.7% annual growth), dominated by Google, Meta, Amazon and YouTube. Prices are high and revenue is hard-currency, but the Privacy Act review and the ACCC's Digital Platform Services Inquiry are forcing changes to consent, data collection and algorithmic transparency, bringing consent-infrastructure (CMP) costs and platform-concentration exposure. … In addition, the wagering-advertising law passed in August 2026 is expected to remove high-reach inventory in live sport, venues and uniforms from 2027 onward, so demand from the betting category is set to shrink.[36][92]

US ad dollars are shifting fast to CTV and retail media: CTV ad spend reaches ~$37.95bn in 2026 (+15% YoY) and is set to overtake traditional TV by 2028, with retail the largest CTV category (~20%). … Retail-media CTV roughly doubles from ~$4.99bn (2025) to ~$10.28bn (2028). CTV rewards first-party data and measurement and is gaining weight as a way to reach adults and parents outside mobile social, while install-level attribution remains harder there than on mobile surfaces.[40][42]

MIXI's revenue mix has tilted toward sports and betting, which ties its marketing premises to that sector's rules. Prior-year actuals (FY ended March 2026) were revenue ¥171.4bn, operating profit ¥22.3bn, ordinary profit ¥24.7bn and net income ¥17.3bn, so guidance implies higher revenue with lower operating profit and higher net income.[95][98][101]

On Nielsen's numbers, ad-supported viewing fell from 74.2% of total US viewing in Q4 2025 to 72.8% in Q1 2026 and 71.5% in the April-June quarter; streaming's 48.2% share inside that bloc is a gain within a shrinking pool. … Nielsen changed seven elements of its calculation at once on 31 August 2026, and coverage notes that the autumn move to DASH estimates will break quarter-on-quarter comparability. CTV growth rates are therefore read against a discontinuous measurement currency.[110]

  1. 🇺🇸 US ad dollars are shifting fast to CTV and retail media: CTV ad spend reaches ~$37.95bn in 2026 (+15% YoY) and is set to overtake traditional TV by 2028, with retail the largest CTV category (~20%). Retail-media CTV roughly doubles from ~$4.99bn (2025) to ~$10.28bn (2028). CTV rewards first-party data and measurement and is gaining weight as a way to reach adults and parents outside mobile social, while install-level attribution remains harder there than on mobile surfaces. Dollars moving to video does not automatically mean the ad-supported pool is growing, however. On Nielsen's numbers, ad-supported viewing fell from 74.2% of total US viewing in Q4 2025 to 72.8% in Q1 2026 and 71.5% in the April-June quarter; streaming took 48.2% share inside that bloc, but of a shrinking pool. Nielsen also changed seven things at once on 31 August 2026 — wearable-based co-viewing capture, latency-adjusted DASH universe estimates, a household demographic model and more — so no single adjustment can be isolated as the cause of a ratings shift, and buyers had to re-verify August delivery against July. Coverage notes that the autumn move to DASH estimates will break quarter-on-quarter comparability outright. Allocation to CTV therefore has to be judged on the discontinuity of the measurement currency as well as on growth rates.[40][42][110] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  2. Generative AI assistants have entered the market as ad sellers in earnest. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT's US free and Go tiers on 9 February 2026, and per Reuters the US pilot passed $100m in annualized revenue within six weeks. In August 2026 it expanded across European markets, and on 27 August it began showing ads on the free and Go tiers in India, where it reports more than 100m weekly active users, launched with about 50 brands, named WPP and Omnicom as agency partners, set a minimum spend of ₹725 (~$7.60) per day and said an ads manager would follow the next month. A third acquisition surface alongside search and social is forming, but in mid-August 2026 'maximize results' became the default bidding strategy for new ad groups, and OpenAI's own documentation states it does not guarantee delivery against a specific CPA, CPC or ROAS. Inventory scale, targeting and measurement specifications remain in flux, so effective CPA is still not readily comparable with established channels.[73][74][88][89] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  3. 🇯🇵 MIXI's revenue mix has tilted toward sports and betting, which ties its marketing premises to that sector's rules. Per IR BANK's aggregation, company guidance for FY ending March 2027 is revenue of ¥185.0bn (+7.95% YoY), operating profit ¥19.5bn (-12.38%), ordinary profit ¥20.0bn (-19.03%) and net income ¥25.0bn (+44.76%). MIXI took 66.43% of PointsBet on 16 September 2025, bringing an Australian bookmaker into the group. Domestically the Sports segment covers TIPSTAR and Chariloto (keirin and auto-race betting) plus media such as netkeiba and netkeirin; Japan's public-racing advertising guideline, applied during 2026, caps points rebates at 1% for ordinary races and 5% for special races and ended purchase-linked tier schemes, removing acquisition and re-visit incentives that operators had used. Capping the rebate budget by rule bears directly on CAC design for betting-adjacent products. The measure is grounded in gambling-addiction policy, and public sources give no indication it will loosen. Prior-year actuals (FY ended March 2026) were revenue ¥171.4bn, operating profit ¥22.3bn, ordinary profit ¥24.7bn and net income ¥17.3bn, so guidance implies higher revenue with lower operating profit and higher net income. On the payment side, out-of-app first-party web shops are widening. The Monster Strike Web Shop added Minna no Ginko's direct bank-debit payment on 6 August 2026 (0.5 extra points per ¥100 versus other methods, plus 10% cashback capped at ¥1,000 from 6 to 31 August) and announced a Rakuten Pay campaign on 1 September. FamilyAlbum, from 3 September 2026, lets users buy collaboration sticker sets outright — ¥380 without the ¥220 monthly plan, ¥280 with it — rather than only through the subscription. Both widen purchase routes outside the app stores and outside subscription, though the announcements state no fee or mix figures, so the effect on revenue composition cannot be measured externally.[101][95][98][97][115][114] as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓

App discovery is shifting to AI assistants and creator video, and a platform's own data now shows chat answers sharply cutting outbound clicks. Retention and CRM are the battleground after install. Games spread through IP collaborations and anniversary free-pull campaigns and family apps through invite loops, while public assessment of chance-based monetization and betting promotion hardens. VTubers and US micro-creators are settled reach channels.

  1. Creator and UGC influence keeps rising — TikTok's ~3.7% engagement far exceeds Instagram's ~0.48%. Per a TikTok For Business case study, FamilyAlbum extended creator video ads beyond English markets with reported improvements in CPA, CVR and CTR (the source is a TikTok/MIXI co-marketing piece, not independent verification). … Ads built on personal storytelling earn trust more readily, but disclosure duties and claim substantiation sit with the advertiser: in August 2026 Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency issued orders against the two operators of a photo-editing app over influencer posts that carried no advertising label.[9][20][96]
    as of 2026-08
  2. The battle after install is retention and CRM: iOS Day-30 retention is ~3.1%, Android ~2.8%, and gaming Day-7 sits around 4-8%, while users who receive even one push in the first 90 days are reported to retain ~3x better. The higher acquisition costs go, the more push, email and lifecycle CRM contribute to total revenue.[12][13] as of 2026-01
  3. Public assessment of chance-based monetization is hardening. In October 2025 the European Parliament's IMCO committee adopted a report calling for a ban on gambling-like mechanisms such as loot boxes in games accessible to minors, and in March 2026 Europe's PEGI ratings body set a minimum age-16 rating for new titles containing paid random items, applying to submissions from June 2026. … Both rest on addiction, overspending and minor-protection grounds. For titles whose main funnel is gacha, how collaborations and gacha announcements are surfaced becomes an age-rating and reputational question in itself, and a PEGI 16 rating affects both the age range reachable through UA in Europe and how the title is presented in stores.[50][64]

  4. 🇦🇺
Public assessment of betting promotion is hardening too, and the rules now reach the sports-viewing experience itself. Australia's 20 August 2026 amendments ban wagering ads during live sport, in venues and on uniforms, and create an advertising opt-out register. … Supporters cite addiction and harm reduction; independent members criticize the package for stopping short of a full ban, and government analysis was reported to estimate a ~0.8% reduction in spending. In Japan, the public-racing advertising guideline likewise restricts points rebates and purchase-linked promotion as an addiction measure. Marketing for betting-adjacent products is therefore increasingly designed around what is permitted rather than what can be bought. Operators argue demand may shift to unlicensed offshore sites, and whether that displacement actually occurs remains contested.[92][93][94][97]

VTubers have settled in as a Japan-origin brand-reach channel: the market hit ~$3.06bn in 2025 (20%+ growth), with Cover (Hololive) and ANYCOLOR (Nijisanji) dominating, and 2025 saw tie-ups with McDonald's, Kura Sushi and the LA Dodgers plus expansion into Southeast Asia and Latin America. … The same fandom intensity raises backlash and contract-termination exposure and brings disclosure duties, and cost and repeatability vary widely by deal.[30][38]

On 30 June 2026 MIXI announced 'FamilyAlbum Family Partner', a co-creation framework that turns FamilyAlbum into a venue for brand tie-ups, starting a pilot with one initial partner in July, with Rakuten Travel the first. … It is designed as a brand touchpoint inside a daily-use family app rather than a one-off ad slot, but as of 5 September 2026 no additional partners had been announced and its scale and effect remain unverified. Because the product rests on family trust, the degree of advertising involvement and user acceptance remain open questions.[61][62][21]

Viewer resistance to AI-generated ads appears smaller than buyers assume. Research FreeWheel published on 5 September 2026 — 2,496 US viewers, 226 media buyers and 50 sellers, fielded in November 2025 and April 2026 — found 48% of buyers and 39% of sellers expected viewers to dislike AI-made commercials, while only 10% of viewers said they disliked the AI ads they actually saw, a 38-point perception gap. … Eighty-nine percent of viewers welcomed AI reducing repeated ads within an episode, and the same share approved of AI optimizing placement timing. Friction remains on the operational side: only 22% of buyers said they were strongly open to fully autonomous AI campaign management, and 48% of buyers (versus 42% of sellers) said AI glitches hampered their work. This is a single self-reported survey, but it is evidence that internal assumptions about tolerance for AI-made creative may not match measured audience response.[112]

In the US the creator economy is becoming a core acquisition channel: influencer spend hits ~$6.8bn in 2026 (+9.7%), social-creator revenue ~$21.1bn (more than doubling since 2022), and nano/micro-creators take 49.9% of creator spend. … Reported survey figures put 48% of marketers calling creators a must-have, 74% using AI in influencer programs and 59% expecting to raise spend — all self-reported, with measurement methods not standardized across sources.[39][43]

  9. 🇮🇳 India's influencer marketing scales to ~₹3,375 crore (~$405m, 18-25% growth) by 2026, with 50m+ active creators, 600m+ internet users, three in five consumers trusting influencer recommendations over brand ads, and 78% of digital ad revenue on mobile. Regional-language, creator-led UGC is reported to beat English-market-style paid UA on cost per reach, at the price of language-by-language production capacity and disclosure oversight.[26] as of 2026-01
  10. The biggest ASO trend of 2026 is 'AI search': users increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Apple Intelligence which app to install before opening a store, so word-of-mouth and AI recommendations reshape discovery. … Discovery investment widens from store optimization to earning recommendations inside LLMs, though LLM recommendation behavior is opaque and independent ways to measure the effect are scarce. 11. The premise that none of this is measurable did partly break in late 2026, however. 13. 🇯🇵 In games, IP collaborations and large gacha campaigns are the main levers for social spread and reactivation. In 2026 Monster Strike ran SAKAMOTO DAYS (15 May-2 Jun), K-ON! and its first NARUTO Shippuden tie-up (12 Jun-2 Jul), then used its flagship offline event DREAMDAZE IV (11-12 Jul) to announce a third Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration (14 Jul-2 Aug, with limited gacha and an SNS campaign).[45][60][59] as of 2026-09
  14. 🇯🇵 August brought an orb giveaway from the 1st to the 10th with a prize draw of up to ¥50,000 in digital gift value for users who shared results on X, a first Blue Lock collaboration announced on 13 August and starting 16 August with a starter pack and SNS campaign, and a 13th-anniversary countdown gacha announced on 20 August — 'choose a course, up to 200 pulls', starting 22 August.[79][102][103] as of 2026-09
  15. 🇯🇵 The pattern continued into September: a second Love Live! 17. Platform-side measurements of how far assistant answers substitute for outbound clicks became public for the first time. These concern web publishers rather than app stores, but the more recommendations complete inside the answer, the harder non-store, non-paid discovery paths become to measure. The rebate depends on orbs used and on prediction accuracy.[134]

Measurement keeps SKAN and AdAttributionKit side by side while the ATT prompt changes with iOS 27.2. Ad buying consolidates into AI black boxes and agents as price ceilings shrink through new set-ups, though shared agent-trading protocols have not reached scale. Creative moves to generative AI, discovery extends into LLMs and the ChatGPT ad surface (now with MMP attribution), and age-assurance APIs enter the funnel. Inference tokens are a new cost line, and an AdMob outage showed ad-SDK risk.

  1. iOS measurement is mid-transition: Apple positions AdAttributionKit (AAK) as SKAdNetwork's successor, adding third-party-store support, re-engagement and configurable attribution windows, but WWDC26 (June 2026) brought no significant AAK or SKAN updates, leaving both frameworks largely unchanged heading into the iOS 27 cycle. … Running AAK alongside SKAN 4 and keeping MMPs updated remains necessary, and with no deprecation date the design of measurement stays uncertain. On top of that, the neutralization of the ATT prompt in Germany, due within four months of service of the decision, is a new variable that could move opt-in rates and signal volume at least in that market.[7][78][81]
    as of 2026-08
  2. Store discovery is going AI too: at WWDC25 Apple introduced AI-generated App Store Tags derived from metadata and expanded Custom Product Pages from 35 to 70, making them keyword-linkable into organic search, while weighting rating recency more heavily. ASO becomes an integrated game of review operations, CPP design and LLM visibility.[22] as of 2025-06
  3. 🇯🇵 Apple Ads multiplied App Store search ad slots from 3 March 2026, starting in the UK and then Japan, reaching all markets within that month — the first increase in ad density since 2016, with Apple auto-deciding placement by relevance and bid. Because Japan is an early market, domestic paid-search competition and price levels shift ahead of elsewhere.[8] as of 2026-03
  4. Age assurance has become a technical requirement in the install funnel. Apple offers the Declared Age Range API worldwide: self-declared and guardian-declared age ranges from iOS 26, age verification via government ID, payment method or guardian verification plus PermissionKit parental consent from iOS 26.2, and requiredRegulatoryFeatures with significant-update acknowledgement sheets from iOS 26.4. … In jurisdictions where the law requires it Apple shares statutory age categories; elsewhere users share ranges by choice. Enforcing age restrictions is the developer's responsibility, apps rated 18+ still need the API in regulated regions, and consent revocation (RESCIND_CONSENT) must be handled. For family and kids-adjacent products this inserts age-band and parental-consent branches between first launch and purchase, changing the premises of conversion rate and onboarding design.[100][66]

  5. An ad-funded product's revenue can stop on a single SDK defect. For roughly 188 hours from 20 to 28 August 2026, rewarded video ads on Google's AdMob failed to play on Android, showing only a static play icon. … Because the rendering control sits inside the compiled SDK there was no workaround, and every Android developer using the rewarded format was affected. Google classified the incident at its lowest severity tier, 'service information', and issued three dashboard updates: 28 hours between the first and second, then 160 hours of silence before the final one. Neither affected impression volumes nor revenue impact were published, and the treatment of advertiser billing for impressions that never rendered was not stated. Alongside inventory prices and regulation, the availability of the ad SDKs a product depends on — and the granularity of incident disclosure — is part of the basis for measuring revenue and managing risk.[113]

  6. YouTube Shorts reached ~200bn daily views (up from 70bn in early 2024), establishing itself as an alternative discovery and UGC channel against TikTok's institutional uncertainty. … Vertical short-form lifts CVR and CTR for both family and games, and Google Play's Engage SDK reports vertical video adding +7% watch time and +5% conversion. Concentration in one platform amplifies exposure to policy and algorithm changes, making redundancy across surfaces an operational question.[32]

  7. On 24-25 August 2026 X published X Ads MCP at ads-api.x.com/mcp, exposing 23 tools of which ten — including create_campaign, update_campaign, activate_campaign and add_targeting_criterion — can write to and spend from live accounts. … Safety design is thin but explicit: campaigns created through the protocol arrive paused and require a separate activation call, access tokens expire in about two hours, and OAuth2 scopes limit permissions; Grok and Claude Code are named as clients. Creative generation, upload and optimization can now run as one pipeline, which makes permissioning, auditing and recovery from mis-delivery operational requirements rather than optional.[90]

  8. Once agents actually run, the unit of cost changes as well. Reporting in September 2026 describes inference tokens becoming a new cost line at agencies whose agents buy media: Dept built an internal gateway routing requests to cost-appropriate models after one employee burned 1.5m tokens in a single day, PMG imposes daily per-user token caps with escalation review, Brainlabs runs tiered allowances, and Rise monitors agent 'drift' through PubMatic's audit logs. … PubMatic published a five-step guardrail framework on 5 August 2026 covering audit trails, pre-approval with one-time passcodes, and drift detection.[109]

  9. For scale, one task was reported in April 2026 to have consumed roughly €50 of tokens in 25 minutes, while Google's agentic video mode is said to cut token consumption 58-88% on comparable work. … A KPMG survey fielded April-May 2026 found 49% of organizations narrowed, delayed or paused AI deployments when cost exceeded value, and only 7% reported established ROI. Agencies currently fold token costs into media arrangements rather than pricing them separately, and the level at which small or low-performing campaigns can absorb inference cost is not yet established.[109]

Generative AI is entering creative production. On 30 June 2026 MIXI announced an enterprise partnership with Runway AI, saying it had adopted video-generation models across internal creative work including film, animation and VFX; the company stated that Monster Strike video production went from 21 days to 3 and corporate branding video from 20 days to 7 (company-reported figures, not independently verified). … On 1 August 2026 MIXI created a Chief AI Officer role to run company-wide AI strategy and governance. Higher creative throughput matches what AI bidding surfaces demand, while also having to line up with rules on disclosure and deceptive AI-generated content, an ACCC priority area among others.[75][76][37]

Those disclosure duties became concrete in 2026. Article 50 of the EU AI Act has been enforceable since 2 August 2026, and on 5 September 2026 the Dutch advertising body VIA Nederland published a four-trigger mapping for agencies: chatbots and brand assistants that talk to users must disclose AI involvement per … ceptibly at first contact; synthetic image, audio or video that could mislead about real people or events must be disclosed; AI-generated or manipulated text on politics, health, safety or fundamental rights needs disclosure unless substantive human editorial review took place; and agencies that build their own systems act as 'providers' and carry machine-readable marking duties separate from visible labels. Most advertisers and agencies using existing tools are 'deployers' on the visible-labeling side. Where video generation is built into production, EU delivery requires a per-asset judgement on whether disclosure applies.[111]
    as of 2026-09
  12. The AI assistant itself is an ad surface, and third-party app-install measurement now exists. ChatGPT ads are matched on conversation topic, past chats and prior ad interactions, labeled and separated from answers, not shown to minors, and exclude sensitive topics such as health, politics and mental health. … In July 2026 AppsFlyer and Adjust went live as measurement partners in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan and South Korea, supporting install attribution, re-engagement and in-app event postbacks; before that, app advertisers relied on OpenAI's own reporting. In Europe OpenAI told users that ads would not be personalised at the outset. Default bidding still carries no efficiency guarantee, so comparability with established channels remains limited.[73][124][123][89]
    as of 2026-09
  13. The view that agent-driven ad operations have become an industry format has counter-evidence. In September 2026 Adform's CTO agreed that 'very little money' runs through either of the industry's two agent protocols, AAMP (built on OpenRTB and OpenDirect) and the execution-agnostic AdCP, and said one will die, they will merge, or they will coexist. … He put custom SSP integrations at 250-350 days of work versus about 50 against a shared standard, and agentic connections across multiple SSPs at 'thousands or tens of thousands of days'. Platform-specific write-capable tools such as X Ads MCP exist, but standardization across programmatic trading has not reached scale.[131][90]

  14. Ad buying is AI-automated by default, and advertisers are losing levers that cap price, though not all at once. Google PMax has about 71% advertiser adoption, and AI Max delivers about +7% conversions while generating creative; Meta's Advantage+ (Andromeda) is reported to have pushed CPMs up 20%+. … In August 2026 ChatGPT Ads made 'maximize results' the default bid for new ad groups. Microsoft Advertising stops accepting Max CPC on non-portfolio Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value and Maximize Clicks campaigns created from 1 October 2026. Existing campaigns, portfolio strategies, Target Impression Share and Enhanced CPC keep the setting. Price ceilings recede through new set-ups first, and outcomes depend more on creative, on the signals fed in, and on measuring results after the fact.[15][16][89]

  1. Ad buying is AI-automated by default, and advertisers are losing the levers that cap price. Google PMax has ~71% advertiser adoption and AI Max delivers ~+7% conversions while auto-generating creative; Meta's Advantage+ (Andromeda) is reported to have pushed CPMs up 20%+. In August 2026 ChatGPT Ads made 'maximize results' the default bid strategy for new ad groups, and Microsoft Advertising announced that from 1 October 2026 it removes Max CPC ceilings from automated-bidding campaigns, arguing explicit cost controls cause spend-pacing irregularities. As budgets concentrate into AI black boxes and the classic control of setting a price ceiling recedes, outcomes hinge on creative, on the quality of signals fed in, and on measuring results after the fact.[15][16][89] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  2. The AI assistant itself has become an ad surface, and the footprint has widened. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT's US free and Go tiers on 9 February 2026, expanded across Europe in August and reached India on 27 August. Ads are matched on conversation topic, past chats and prior ad interactions, are labeled and separated from answers, are not shown to minors, exclude sensitive topics such as health, politics and mental health, and give advertisers only aggregate impression and click data. LLM-mediated discovery is thus extending from a surface you optimize into one you can buy, but with default bidding explicitly not guaranteeing an efficiency target and with inventory and measurement still early-stage, comparability with established channels is limited.[73][74][88][89] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  3. Agent-driven ad operations moved from a single platform's experiment toward an industry format. At TikTok World 2026 (13-14 May) TikTok released an MCP server letting AI agents connect into TikTok Ads workflows, alongside Smart+ automation, Branded Buzz and Growth Max for Mini Games. On 24-25 August 2026 X published X Ads MCP at ads-api.x.com/mcp, exposing 23 tools of which ten — including create_campaign, update_campaign, activate_campaign and add_targeting_criterion — can write to and spend from live accounts. Safety design is thin but explicit: campaigns created through the protocol arrive paused and require a separate activation call, access tokens expire in about two hours, and OAuth2 scopes limit permissions; Grok and Claude Code are named as clients. Creative generation, upload and optimization can now run as one pipeline, which makes permissioning, auditing and recovery from mis-delivery operational requirements rather than optional. PubMatic published a five-step guardrail framework on 5 August 2026 covering audit trails, pre-approval with one-time passcodes, and drift detection. For scale, one task was reported in April 2026 to have consumed roughly €50 of tokens in 25 minutes, while Google's agentic video mode is said to cut token consumption 58-88% on comparable work. A KPMG survey fielded April-May 2026 found 49% of organizations narrowed, delayed or paused AI deployments when cost exceeded value, and only 7% reported established ROI. Agencies currently fold token costs into media arrangements rather than pricing them separately, and the level at which small or low-performing campaigns can absorb inference cost is not yet established.[31][90][109] as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
  4. 🇯🇵 Generative AI is entering creative production. On 1 August 2026 MIXI created a Chief AI Officer role to run company-wide AI strategy and governance. Higher creative throughput matches what AI bidding surfaces demand, while also having to line up with rules on disclosure and deceptive AI-generated content, an ACCC priority area among others. Those disclosure duties became concrete in 2026. Article 50 of the EU AI Act has been enforceable since 2 August 2026, and on 5 September 2026 the Dutch advertising body VIA Nederland published a four-trigger mapping for agencies: chatbots and brand assistants that talk to users must disclose AI involvement perceptibly at first contact; synthetic image, audio or video that could mislead about real people or events must be disclosed; AI-generated or manipulated text on politics, health, safety or fundamental rights needs disclosure unless substantive human editorial review took place; and agencies that build their own systems act as 'providers' and carry machine-readable marking duties separate from visible labels. Most advertisers and agencies using existing tools are 'deployers' on the visible-labeling side. Where video generation is built into production, EU delivery requires a per-asset judgement on whether disclosure applies.[75][76][37][111] as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓

Legal premises of disclosure, monetization and distribution move together. Cookies persist; an alternative ATT prompt becomes mandatory in five EU markets. Influencer disclosure in Japan, the US and Australia and US state GPC recognition tighten advertising. Gacha faces Korean probability rules, the untabled EU DFA, PEGI 16 and Brazil's under-18 ban. Distribution opens to rival stores in the US and EU, Google ad tech gets a six-year conduct decree, and AI creative falls under EU AI Act Article 50.

  1. Google abandoned third-party-cookie deprecation in Chrome in April 2025 and shut down Privacy Sandbox itself in October 2025. Cookies persist, so web measurement and retargeting can continue, but GDPR-style consent duties are unchanged and measurement investments premised on cookie loss need their assumptions revisited.[3][4] as of 2025-10

US app distribution has begun to open in practice. Google and Epic jointly withdrew their motion to modify the injunction in July 2026, and from 22 July 2026 the Play Catalog Access Program lets third-party app stores be distributed inside Google Play with access to the Play catalog. … Participating stores pay a $5,000 annual security-review fee, distribute only within the US, and must keep malware-install attempts below 1%. On 10 August 2026 Aptoide became the first store distributed this way, and on 14 August a judge was reported to have called the current flow not acceptable and ordered Google to remove friction from finding and installing rival stores. In-app link-outs remain, though whether Google may charge fees on link-out transactions is unresolved. As distribution routes and payment paths multiply, post-install conversion design and fee assumptions diverge — but how far actual usage follows is a separate question, as Japan's 5.9% adoption figure shows.[72][85][86][83]

Whether a platform's stated auction matches what it charges has also become a matter for regulators. On 31 August 2026 the FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon for deception, alleging it described a second-price auction to advertisers for more than seven years while applying an undisclosed reserve after the fact. … The share of clicks charged at the advertiser's full bid is alleged to have risen from about 4% in late 2020 to 79.1% in 2024, with roughly $20bn of surcharges across some 1.2m US advertisers. Amazon denies it, citing flat inflation-adjusted average costs, conversion rates up more than 24%, and over $8bn of cumulative advertiser savings from 2021 to 2025. The facts are unresolved, but the emergence of a duty to explain the basis of charging as a central legal question in platform advertising points the same way as Judge Brinkema's remedy. As automated bidding becomes the default and price ceilings are withdrawn, the logs and measurement an advertiser can verify for itself become the contested ground.[106][105]

  4. Disclosure duties for AI-generated content have entered application in the EU. Article 50 of the AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026, requiring that interactive AI identify itself, that synthetic media capable of misleading viewers about real people or events be disclosed, that AI-generated or manipulated text on politics, health, safety or fundamental rights be disclosed unless substantive human editorial review occurred, and that 'providers' building their own systems apply machine-readable marking. … On 5 September 2026 the Dutch advertising body VIA Nederland published guidance mapping these four triggers for agencies. Advertisers and agencies using existing tools sit on the deployer side with visible-labeling duties; those building their own systems carry the additional machine-readable duty. The more that generative AI is used to mass-produce creative, the more per-asset disclosure judgements and records become an operating requirement for EU delivery. Together with the ACCC's focus on deceptive AI-generated content, the legal premise for AI creative is shifting from whether it can be made to whether it can be labeled.[111][37]

Japan's stealth-marketing rules (a designation under the Premiums and Representations Act, in force since October 2023) treat compensated influencer posts as advertising requiring clear 'PR' labeling, with the advertiser liable and obliged to monitor disclosure. … Enforcement now reaches app marketing: on 6 August 2026 the Consumer Affairs Agency issued orders under that Act against the two companies providing the photo-editing app SNOW. Reporting says they paid at least 72 influencers, including with electronic gift vouchers, to post on X without labeling the posts as advertising. The greater the weight of creator and UGC activity, the more disclosure compliance and monitoring become legal preconditions — and consumer-app UA is now demonstrably within the enforcement perimeter.[19][96]
    as of 2026-08
  6. 🇺🇸 In the US, FTC disclosure enforcement intensified in 2025 and influencer posts are treated as a regulated advertising channel: clear and conspicuous disclosure of material connections is mandatory, with heightened scrutiny of health and financial (finfluencer) content. Disclosure compliance and substantiated claims are legal preconditions for UGC and influencer activity.[33] as of 2025-12

In Australia the AANA Code requires advertising to be clearly identifiable, and on 24 March 2026 the ACCC issued its first influencer non-disclosure penalty (A$39,600 against PhotobookShop). … The ACCC's 2025-26 priorities cover influencers, fake reviews and AI-generated deceptive content, so creator activity in Australia requires #ad/PR labeling and monitoring. The wagering-advertising law passed in August 2026 sits on a separate track, administered by ACMA, and is reported to bring influencer promotion of betting within its restrictions.[37][92]

  8. Gacha and loot-boxes, the principal monetization mechanic in games, face intensifying regulation and social scrutiny on addiction, minor-protection and transparency grounds. … South Korea's mandatory probability-disclosure law (in force March 2024) moved to active enforcement, allowing immediate surcharges of up to 3% of annual sales or KRW 1bn, and Nexon drew a record KRW 11.6bn consumer-protection fine in 2024 over drop-rate disclosure. Belgium's Gaming Commission treats paid loot boxes as illegal gambling, while the Netherlands' Council of State ruled in March 2022 that loot boxes are not a game of chance under Dutch gambling law and overturned the KSA's penalty against EA/FIFA, so they are not currently classified as gambling there.[47][48][49][54]

  9. In the EU, the European Parliament's IMCO committee adopted a report in October 2025 (32 for, 5 against, 9 abstaining) calling for a ban on loot boxes in games accessible to minors, and the Commission is expected to table the Digital Fairness Act in Q4 2026 — but the Parliament's legislative train file, updated 1 A … ugust 2026, still lists it as announced with no proposal tabled, and names addictive design and dark patterns among the target practices.[118] Options range from an outright ban to mandatory parental consent for minors' purchases, with obligations not expected to apply before 2029.[50][56]

Chance-based monetization carries structural downside on addiction, minors and reputation, and bears directly on product and marketing premises such as probability disclosure, region-specific designs, spending caps and age verification.[64][51]

  11. The ATT remedy is now a concrete specification that keeps the direction of symmetric consent requests. Per PPC Land, the alternative version is a full-page sheet with 'Allow' and 'Reject' buttons (replacing 'Ask App Not to Track'), an optional 'Additional Information' button and formatted purpose strings, and apps may re-request consent once a year even after a refusal. … When developers must seek permission to track does not change. Apple has not announced a release date for iOS 27.2, and beta wording can change before shipping. Because the German decision is dated 13 August, the German deadline cannot fall before 13 December 2026. Adjust data put the industry-average opt-in rate at 38% in Q1 2026 (35% a year earlier) and gaming at 39%; the rate after the change cannot yet be observed.[119][120]

The Google ad-tech case is settling into conduct rules rather than a break-up. Judge Brinkema found on 17 April 2025 that Google monopolized the publisher ad server (91% share) and ad exchange markets, and in a 106-page opinion of 2 September 2026 refused to order a sale of AdX or DFP, imposing a six-year conduct decree instead. … Reporting describes the decree as worldwide in scope. It requires AdX integration with Prebid within 15 months, AdX bids reaching rival ad servers on equal terms, DFP pricing-data sharing, per-ad records of how winning bids were chosen, and oversight by a court-appointed monitor and technical committee. A joint proposed final judgment with specific deadlines is due on 2 October 2026, and a Google appeal is expected.[105][128]

US state privacy laws expand to ~20 states in 2026, with 12 states requiring businesses to honor universal opt-out signals such as Global Privacy Control (GPC). … Regulators treat in-app and in-game opt-out implementation and GPC honoring as the test of a real program, and enforcement is reaching mobile and gaming. TikTok's $400m COPPA settlement of August 2026, part of which depends on how a court treats a 2019 consent order, also shows that targeted advertising built on minors' data is a primary federal enforcement target. For US targeting, honoring opt-outs in-app, distinguishing age bands, and first-party or consent-based measurement are now legal preconditions.[41][87][126]

  14. The EU's single App Store business terms took effect on 1 October 2026. Commissions are 26% through Apple In-App Purchase (15% for Small Business Program members and subscriptions after year one), 20% for alternative in-app payment (10%), 15% on link-out purchases within seven days of the tap (10%), and a 5% Core Technology Commission for alternative-marketplace and web distribution. … Alternative payments may sit beside Apple's. The EU and Japan are now at nearly the same level: Japan also charges 26% through Apple IAP (21% commission plus 5% payment processing), 21% with alternative payment and 15% on link-outs. The gap between Apple IAP and alternative payment is 6 points in the EU and 5 in Japan, so the 'gap too small' reason in Japan's survey applies to the EU unchanged.[121][122][70][83]

  1. The principal ATT antitrust case ended in binding commitments. On 17 August 2026 Germany's Federal Cartel Office closed its proceeding after Apple committed to neutralize the consent dialog by aligning its own and third-party requests and removing potentially discouraging symbols and wording, to permit an architecture in which Apple's consent request can be combined with data-protection consent, and to widen the scope for publishers to explain what personalised advertising means for them. Implementation is due within four months of service, the commitments run seven years, and an independent trustee monitors compliance. Coverage differs on scope: some reports say Germany only, others describe European effect. In France, Apple is appealing the €150m fine of March 2025, and in January 2026 a court refused to suspend ATT. The remedy direction is symmetry between consent requests, not the removal of ATT, and how iOS signal volume actually moves has to be measured after the change ships.[5][6][53][58][80][81][82] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  2. 🇺🇸 The US ad-tech monopolization case has entered its remedy phase as a rewrite of auction rules rather than a break-up. Judge Leonie Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia found on 17 April 2025 that Google had monopolized both the publisher ad server market (91% share) and the ad exchange market, and set remedies on 2 September 2026. The order requires real-time AdX bid data to be shared with rival ad servers, ends unified pricing rules so publishers can set different price floors per bidder, prohibits first-look and last-look advantages on open-web display inventory, and imposes six years of behavioral monitoring. Divestiture of AdX, a forced sale of the DFP ad server and open-sourcing DFP's auction logic to Prebid.org were all refused. The judge cited four practical concerns: no obvious buyer, market change outpacing divestiture timelines, appeals delaying relief for years, and harm to small publishers that rely on DFP for free. Ownership is unchanged while auction mechanics change, so publishers gain pricing flexibility and advertisers face different bidding conditions on the open web. Whether the remedy works will only be visible over the six-year monitoring period.[105] as of 2026-09-02 · superseded by ↓

Marketing's own footprint is small, but video and CTV ad delivery plus AI ad buying, generative creative and agent-run operations are gradually raising its compute and energy footprint.

  1. Video advertising led the growth of Japan's internet ad spend and is mainstream globally. CTV delivery and high-bitrate streaming are bandwidth- and power-heavy, so the energy footprint of campaigns rises gradually.[77][40] as of 2025-12
  2. AI ad platforms such as PMax, Advantage+ and AI Max are inference-intensive, so as ad buying consolidates into AI, marketing's compute and power use grows. Mass creative production with video-generation models such as Runway adds generation-time demand, and agent-run operations over MCP tend to increase the number of inference calls per unit of work. … The direct business risk is small, but it remains a minor ESG consideration for AI-heavy ad operations.[15][16][75][90]
    as of 2026-08
  3. Public evidence on inference load is beginning to appear. Per September 2026 reporting on agent-driven media buying, one task consumed roughly €50 of tokens in 25 minutes in April 2026, while Google's agentic video mode is said to cut token consumption 58-88% on comparable work — so the same job can differ several-fold to an order of magnitude depending on implementation. … Agencies are imposing daily token caps and routing requests through internal gateways to cheaper models, which makes cost optimization function directly as compute restraint. Where marketing's environmental footprint is estimated, the public data suggests the main variables are the implementation of automation and the number of inference calls rather than the volume of ad delivery.[109]
