MIXI 🇯🇵🌐🇺🇸🇮🇳🇦🇺

MIXI

MIXI (TSE Prime 2121) runs four segments: Digital Entertainment, Sports, Lifestyle and Investment. FY2027 guidance keeps operating income at ¥19.5B (-12.4%); only net income was raised, on the one-off bitbank gain. Sports leads revenue, yet about 80% of segment profit comes from Digital Entertainment, where Monster Strike offsets falling MAU with higher ARPU. PointsBet grows through Canadian online casino while Australia shrinks ahead of the advertising law of 1 January 2027 and new state conduct rules. At home the Mobile Software Competition Act moved store fees first, and site blocking waits on a review of other measures. At ¥3,830 the yield is 4.05% and the forecast PER 9.97x, one-off included.

Review pass. MONST FREAK 2026 (26–27 Sep) moved to past with its announcements.[174] The reading that Q1 FY2027 operating growth came mainly from PointsBet was corrected: Digital Entertainment produced it.[40][99] … An emissions-intensity unit error (per ¥1B, should be per ¥100M) was fixed,[105] Canadian and European items were re-tagged by region, and TIPSTAR's first IP collaboration was added.[175]
  2. 2026-09-25
The BOJ hiked to 1.25% on 18 September, yet the yen slipped back near ¥158; the shares closed at ¥3,830, a 4.05% yield.[154][152] Casino was 85% of Ontario revenue in August.[157] Correction: the MIC document is a … July 2026 report, not an interim summary, and puts verification before blocking.[156] Added: PointsBet's proposed Ontario suspension, Australia's red-flag duty, ASIC's prediction-market warning and India's minors petition.

MIXI, Inc. (TSE Prime 2121) grew on the mixi SNS (2004) and the Monster Strike mobile game (2013) and now runs four segments — Digital Entertainment, Sports (PointsBet / Chiba Jets / FC Tokyo / public-competition betting), Lifestyle (FamilyAlbum "Mitene", minimo) and Investment. … Sports-segment earnings rest on Japan's public-competition framework (keirin, boat, auto and horse racing) and on the Australian and Canadian gambling regimes PointsBet operates under. India moved from a blanket RMG ban to a registration regime under a new regulator (OGAI), though challenges to that law have been pending before the Supreme Court since 2025. The group has no US betting exposure (PointsBet exited the US in 2023, before the acquisition), so the political variable there is distribution and store policy. Gambling's social harm is the central theme of this layer. In Ontario, where PointsBet operates, roughly 80% of market revenue comes from online casino, and peer-reviewed research shows a sharp rise in help-seeking among young men. India's RMG ban collapsed the incumbents, but monetized chance draws hard scrutiny even in the remaining F2P layer. Against that, FamilyAlbum has scaled to 30M users worldwide (40% overseas, 20% North America) in a use case disconnected from gambling, and mixi2 restarted the original communication franchise. Souring developer sentiment toward generative AI also forms the reputational backdrop to the company-wide AI push. Four technology variables dominate: MIXI's self-reported company-wide AI adoption (99%-plus utilization, ~¥1B/yr in cost savings, with a Chief AI Officer created in August 2026) alongside a Runway generative-video partnership; the owned wagering stack — trading, risk, live odds — acquired with PointsBet; the Canadian iCasino product extended on a Bede Gaming platform; and the image-analysis and recommendation ML assets inside FamilyAlbum and mixi2. The conversational robot Romi has vision and long-term memory but no disclosed scale. Strike World is designed as a global IP and distribution funnel, yet its acquisition and retention effect has not been disclosed. All of these are areas where competitors invest similarly, so none should be read as a large firm-specific technological advantage. Five jurisdictions are rewriting monetization assumptions at once. Domestically TIPSTAR and Chariloto run under public-competition law and Monster Strike under the Premiums Act and gacha self-regulation, while FamilyAlbum handles family and children's personal data globally, a heavy burden under APPI/GDPR/COPPA-type rules. What defines this layer is that betting and gacha are under legal pressure simultaneously. Operating energy at owned venues — Chiba Jets' LaLa arena TOKYO-BAY and FC Tokyo stadium operations — plus the widening measurement scope that follows acquisitions and expanded AI use are the standing considerations. No reduction target covering Scope 3 has been published.

  1. 2026-09-04 The shares closed at ¥3,655 on 4 September with a 52-week high of ¥3,825, putting the yield on the ¥155 dividend at 4.24% and the company-forecast PER at 9.52x; the yen had firmed to about ¥156.25 to the dollar on 4 September, with the Bank of Japan's next meeting on 18 September. The spectator businesses face the J.League's calendar shift and the B.PREMIER restructuring in the same year, the yen firmed through late August and early September to about ¥156.25 to the dollar on 4 September (-0.95% on the month, +6.05% on the year) with the policy rate still 1.0%, the next meeting on 18 September and markets expecting a quarter-point rise that month and another in December, and the shares closed at ¥3,655 on 4 September with the 52-week high now ¥3,825 — about 26% above the ¥2,896 close on 31 July, putting the yield on the ¥155 dividend at 4.24%, the company-forecast PER at 9.52x, PBR at 1.27x and market capitalization at about ¥250.5B. India's RMG ban plus OGAI registration looks fixed, yet challenges to the Act have been pending before the Supreme Court since 2025 with no ruling as of September 2026, the Court upheld 28% GST on a supply basis with retrospective effect on 27 May 2026, and a petition seeking to ban gambling platforms presented as social games or e-sports is still pending; the EU's Digital Fairness Act proposal, due Q4 2026, targets loot boxes and addictive design; and in the US, Apple v Epic is before the Supreme Court, leaving F2P and gacha store economics unresolved. MIXI discloses along TCFD lines (its GROUP Integrated Report 2026 was published on 1 September 2026), held an 'AA' MSCI ESG rating for a second consecutive year as of March 2026 and joined the FTSE JPX Blossom Japan Index on 21 July 2026, making it a constituent of all six GPIF-adopted domestic ESG indices.
  2. 2026-08-31 Australia's gambling-advertising reform passed Parliament on 20 August 2026 in a form tougher than the bill introduced on 2 July — a 05:00-20:30 blackout, no live-sport advertising from 15 minutes before to 5 minutes after, limits on direct marketing of inducements and an ACMA-run advertising opt-out register — and commences on 1 January 2027. Age-verification enforcement produced precedents in Ontario (AGCO, C$120,000) and then in New South Wales (Crown Sydney and The Star Sydney, A$2.25M combined), so the regulatory focus has widened from advertising to conduct rules and enforcement. On 17 August an analysis of ATO records stated that PointsBet has never paid Australian company tax; the company also reported an A$26.6M statutory loss over nine months, so the two statements describe the same numbers from different ledgers. On ESG, MIXI joined the FTSE JPX Blossom Japan Index in July 2026 and obtained its first third-party assurance on climate information on 18 August 2026 (Scope 3 excluded); that Scope 3 grew 36.6% in FY2026 to 134,983 t-CO2e, about 97% of total emissions of 139,420 t-CO2e. After the 28 July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake (M7.1, maximum shindo 7), Monster Strike, Kotodaman, TIPSTAR, FamilyAlbum and minimo ran relief measures and ¥29,459,627 was transferred on 21 August, roughly two-thirds of it user-funded. On 25 August New South Wales published an A$95.2M four-year package including a statewide facial-recognition exclusion register and a ban on VIP programmes, so regulation is stacking from federal advertising rules onto state conduct rules; at PointsBet's annual meeting the same day its CEO put the illegal offshore market at about 30% of the licensed domestic market and asked for tougher enforcement, an operator's own estimate. At the same meeting he put the company's own tax and regulatory burden at about 50% of revenue, a different measure from the company-tax finding. Headcount rose to 2,116 in FY2026 (+23.2%) on the PointsBet consolidation, while the owned wallet MIXI M moved the other way as its prepaid card and premium membership were retired. The Sports segment holds more than betting services — netkeiba, a tipping and information site with about 17 million monthly users, is run by MIXI's subsidiary Net Dreamers under the same ownership. In Australia the gambling-advertising bill tabled on 2 July 2026 passed Parliament on 20 August in a form tougher than the version introduced. The daily blackout now starts at 05:00 and runs to 20:30, the live-sport ban widens to 15 minutes before kick-off and 5 minutes after the final whistle, direct marketing of inducements gains time limits, and an advertising opt-out register run by ACMA is created. Commencement stays 1 January 2027. The early-August position, in which the bill lacked settled support and could have been withdrawn, resolved toward stricter rules rather than delay. Senate hearings in August had heard testimony that bookmakers supplied VIP customers with drugs and hospitality (Sportsbet and Tabcorp, named in reporting, deny it; PointsBet was not named), and that shift from advertising to conduct is visible in the enacted inducement provisions. Regulation also kept accumulating at state level after the federal law: on 25 August 2026 New South Wales released its own package, including a statewide self-exclusion register using facial recognition and a ban on VIP programmes. Three of seven directors are outside directors (42%), and an AI-oversight officer (CAIO) role was added in August 2026. That reform became law on 20 August 2026, moving the question from whether operators are regulated to how they discharge new duties. Headcount rose to 2,116 in FY2026 (+23.2%) on the PointsBet consolidation, with women at 18.3% of managers and turnover at 7.5%. After the 28 July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake (M7.1, maximum shindo 7), Monster Strike, Kotodaman, TIPSTAR, FamilyAlbum and minimo ran relief measures and ¥29.46M was transferred to the Japanese Red Cross on 21 August, roughly two-thirds of it funded by users through the same in-app payment rails used for purchases. The group's identity and payments layer, MIXI M, is winding down its consumer prepaid card and premium membership, with payment moving to store rails and a partner bank — on ground that also shifted in law, since alternative app marketplaces and non-App Store payment methods have been permitted in Japan since the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on 18 December 2025. PointsBet consolidation makes Australian and Canadian gambling-licence maintenance and the Betr minority, 19.9% at the close of the takeover, part of the operating premise. Australia's gambling advertising reform passed on 20 August 2026 and commences 1 January 2027. The enacted rules are tighter than the bill as introduced: alongside advertising time limits they restrict direct marketing of inducements and create an ACMA-run advertising opt-out register funded by an industry cost-recovery levy. Canada expanded from Ontario to Alberta on 13 July 2026 while BC leaves private admission undecided, and Ontario produced enforcement precedents when the AGCO fined an operator C$120,000 over age verification on 7 August 2026 and a game supplier C$70,000 over a prohibited auto-play feature on 24 August, widening supervision from identity checks to product design. Age-verification enforcement reached Australia too, with the NSW Independent Casino Commission fining Crown Sydney and The Star Sydney a combined A$2.25M on 21 August; four days later the NSW government published an A$95.2M four-year package covering venues and online wagering alike, including a statewide facial-recognition exclusion register and a ban on VIP programmes. Its own disclosures put Scope 1+2 at 4,437 t-CO2e in FY2026 against 2,932 t-CO2e in FY2024 — roughly 1.5x in two years — and on 18 August 2026 it announced its first third-party assurance, covering FY2026 governance, risk management and Scope 1 and 2 but not Scope 3. About 97% of the total sits in Scope 3, however, and that figure grew 36.6% in FY2026 to 134,983 t-CO2e against total emissions of 139,420 t-CO2e. The assured Scope 1 and 2 is only about 3.2% of group emissions, so the part that grew sits outside assurance, and the electricity behind AI compute and always-on game and betting platforms is booked largely outside the company's direct control. FY2026 total energy consumption is disclosed at 16,251 MWh against 10,190 MWh a year earlier, though the company says it widened the energy types counted from FY2026 and revised some prior electricity data, so the gap reflects both higher consumption and a wider boundary. On a calculation from disclosed figures, total emissions per ¥1B of revenue rose about 22%, from roughly 66.6 t in FY2025 to 81.4 t in FY2026, so growing scale has not diluted intensity.
  3. 2026-07-31 In Q1 FY2027 (Apr–Jun 2026, reported 31 Jul) revenue reached ¥47.07B (+50.3%) and operating income ¥5.43B (+102.8%); Sports at ¥21.67B became the largest segment by revenue for the first time, though Digital Entertainment still supplies roughly 80% of segment profit. Full-year guidance for revenue, EBITDA, operating and ordinary income was left unchanged (operating income ¥19.5B, -12.4% YoY), while net-income guidance was raised from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B solely to reflect the sale of MIXI's entire 26.22% bitbank stake (¥15.59B consideration, ~¥12.23B one-off gain, execution due October 2026); the payout-ratio target moved from 20% to 40% and the annual dividend from ¥125 to ¥155. PointsBet's growth comes from Canadian iGaming while Australia shrinks, and about 80% of Ontario market revenue (89% of handle) came from online casino in July 2026 — a mix that carries addiction, social-cost and regulatory exposure. FamilyAlbum reached 30M users (40% overseas, 20% North America) and Lifestyle turned profitable. Separately from the gambling rules, Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on 18 December 2025, and the Japan Fair Trade Commission published Apple's, iTunes K.K.'s and Google's compliance reports on 27 July 2026. Store-fee terms for an IP earning about 99% of its revenue in Japan therefore moved at home before any outcome in Apple v Epic: 21% on digital goods inside the App Store, 15% on a web purchase reached through an out-of-app link, and a 5% Core Technology Fee through an alternative marketplace. Japan is debating mandatory site blocking in a government expert panel on top of its online-casino crackdown, and MGM Osaka is due to open in 2030. Canada opens province by province, with Alberta live from July 2026. A second Japanese statute, unrelated to gambling, moved first at home: the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on 18 December 2025, and the Japan Fair Trade Commission designated Apple, iTunes KK and Google and published their compliance reports on 27 July 2026. The billing terms for an IP that earns about 99% of its revenue in Japan therefore changed through Japanese legislation before any US ruling. Q1 FY2027 improved — revenue ¥47.07B (+50.3%), EBITDA ¥8.6B (+125%), operating income ¥5.43B (+102.8%) — and Sports at ¥21.67B became the largest segment by revenue for the first time, though most of the growth rate reflects a consolidation scope that now includes PointsBet and Digital Entertainment still supplies roughly 80% of segment profit. Full-year guidance for revenue, EBITDA, operating and ordinary income was left unchanged (operating income ¥19.5B, -12.4% YoY); only net income was revised up, from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B, on the one-off gain from selling the bitbank stake. The payout-ratio target moved from 20% to 40% and the annual dividend to ¥155, a 5.35% yield against the ¥2,896 close on 31 July — though the denominator behind that 40% includes the one-off. Domestically, keirin betting-ticket sales reached ¥1.5488T in fiscal 2025 (to March 2026), a thirteenth consecutive annual rise at 116.6% of the prior year, while market growth in the latest quarter slowed to about 3%, Monster Strike shows declining MAU with rising ARPU, and FamilyAlbum helped Lifestyle turn profitable. In Japan a separate statute from the gambling rules — the Mobile Software Competition Act, fully in force since 18 December 2025 — moved the store-fee and billing terms for an IP that earns about 99% of its revenue domestically, ahead of any US ruling. In Japan the revised Basic Act on Gambling Addiction Countermeasures took effect on 25 September 2025, explicitly banning the operation and promotion of online casinos, and mandatory site blocking is now under review.
  4. 2026-06-30 Australians lost A$36.0B in the twelve months to March 2026 — the highest per-capita losses in the world — which is both the evidence base for advertising reform and the thing that defines an operator's social licence. In Japan, roughly 3.37M online-casino users and a record 317 people booked in 2025 keep addiction policy under pressure, while births fell to 671,236 in 2025 with a total fertility rate of 1.14 — a tenth consecutive record low that thins both the gacha cohort and new-family formation.
  5. 2026-05-31 FY2026 (ended Mar 2026) revenue was ¥171.37B (+10.7%) with operating income ¥22.26B (-16.3%). FY2026 revenue reached a record ¥171.37B (+10.7%) but EBITDA fell 1.6% and operating income 16.3% to ¥22.26B, weighed down by goodwill amortization from the PointsBet deal. PointsBet on a standalone basis posted lower revenue and a wider loss over its nine-month period (Australian net win -4%, Canadian iGaming net win +28%), so growth is concentrated in Canadian online casino.
  6. 2025-09-25 Japan's revised gambling-addiction law took effect on 25 September 2025.

So What? (Implications for MIXI)Group-wide implications are collected in Implications for MIXI →

  1. NOW

The revenue mix and the profit mix are shifting at different speeds

In Q1 FY2027 Sports revenue of ¥21.67B (+94.5%) overtook Digital Entertainment's ¥19.53B, making Sports the largest segment by revenue for the first time. Segment profit, however, was ¥10.88B for Digital Entertainment against ¥1.26B for Sports, so roughly 80% of profit still comes from the Monster Strike-led segment.[40][99] Revenue is diversifying while the profit source stays concentrated; when that state actually reduces dependence on a single IP is the thing to observe (implication).

  2. NOW

Non-game, non-betting revenue (FamilyAlbum / Lifestyle) is profitable but small against Japanese demographics

FamilyAlbum has 30M users worldwide, 40% of them overseas and 20% in North America.[34] In Q1 FY2027 Lifestyle turned profitable on revenue of ¥4.36B (+24.5%) with ¥0.26B of segment profit, but it is still about 9% of group revenue.[40] In Japan, 2025 births fell to 671,236 with a total fertility rate of 1.14, a tenth consecutive record low.[106] How large a revenue base independent of Japanese demographics becomes is, for now, unsupported by scale (implication).

  3. WATCH

Profit quality — reading the one-off, the wider consolidation scope and operating profit apart

For FY2027 only the net-income forecast was raised, from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B, on the ~¥12.2B extraordinary gain from the bitbank sale; the ¥19.5B operating plan, -12.4% against FY2026, was left unchanged.[41][42] The 9.97x company-forecast PER on the ¥3,830 close of 25 September 2026 also rests on EPS that includes the one-off, and is about 18.5x on pre-revision EPS (calculation).[152] The one-off, the widened consolidation scope and operating profit each have to be read on their own (implication).

  4. LONG

Canada's growth is casino-led, and its pace depends on provincial timetables and supervision

PointsBet's growth is casino-weighted: Australian revenue fell 4% while Canada grew 13% and iGaming net win 28%.[15][103] In August 2026 casino supplied 85% of Ontario market revenue, and sports-betting revenue fell 30% on the month.[157] Ontario's AGCO proposed the province's first registration suspension against PointsBet Canada in February,[159] so the faster-growing category concentrates both addiction risk and supervisory load (implication).

  5. NOW

Monster Strike's growth rests on spend per user, not on reach

Digital Entertainment revenue rose to ¥19.53B (+21.5%) in Q1 FY2027, but MIXI attributes the rise to higher ARPU from IP collaborations and monetisation design, while MAU continues to fall.[99][40] The segment's other titles are not sized in disclosures; in the Kumamoto earthquake donations, Monster Strike raised about 32 times Kotodaman's amount (not a sales ratio).[126] About 80% of group segment profit rests on spend per user in one IP's shrinking user base (implication).

  6. NOW

PointsBet's Australian decline is not explained by the market alone

PointsBet's Australian revenue fell 4% in the nine months to March 2026, and statutory EBITDA fell 30%.[15][103] In the same market Betr, which held 19.9% of PointsBet at the takeover and did not accept the bid, reported wagering revenue up 9% for the year to June 2026.[5][149] The periods differ and both companies are loss-making, but the Australian decline began before the January 2027 advertising rules and is not explained by the market alone. The rules will land on a business that is already shrinking (implication).

  7. WATCH

TIPSTAR's growth levers now include Monster Strike's IP-collaboration method

TIPSTAR starts its first IP collaboration, with the Ultraman series, on 5 October.[175] Its Q1 revenue rose 12.8%, ahead of the roughly 3% keirin market growth MIXI cites.[99] The more growth in a slowing market rests on IP collaborations and participation campaigns, the more betting growth and questions about inducement and audience sit on the same campaigns. Australia has legislated endorsement rules of this kind,[115] while Japan has not raised the issue (implication).

Earlier implications · 17
  1. WATCH

Profit quality — the one-off, the widened consolidation scope and operating profit read separately

For FY2027 only the net-income forecast was raised, from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B, and the stated reason is the ~¥12.2B extraordinary gain on the bitbank sale announced in June 2026; guidance for revenue (¥185B), EBITDA (¥31.5B), operating income (¥19.5B) and ordinary income (¥20.0B) was left unchanged.[41][42][101][100] That unchanged ¥19.5B is -12.4% against FY2026's ¥22.26B actual, and Q1's +102.8% operating-income growth did not translate into a raised full-year plan.[40] The Q1 headline of +50.3% revenue and +125% EBITDA also rests mainly on a widened consolidation scope, since the prior-year base predates PointsBet, while full-year FY2026 delivered record sales alongside EBITDA -1.6% and operating income -16.3% on PointsBet goodwill amortization.[99][27] Progress against the company's medium-term direction of an 18%→20% EBITDA margin and 9.6%→15% ROE will therefore be visible only in results excluding one-offs (implication). The share price runs through the same distinction. At ¥3,655 on 4 September 2026 the company-forecast PER is quoted at 9.52x, but the ¥383.99 EPS behind it includes the one-off. Applying the same price to the pre-revision ¥13.5B net-income forecast gives about 17.6x (calculation from disclosed figures), and the ¥155 dividend is roughly a 75% payout on a recurring basis.[122] The cheap-looking screen and the unchanged -12.4% operating plan are two faces of one company (implication).

  2. NOW

The revenue mix and the profit mix are shifting at different speeds

In Q1 FY2027 Sports revenue of ¥21.67B (+94.5%) overtook Digital Entertainment's ¥19.53B (+21.5%), making it the largest segment by revenue for the first time. Segment profit, however, was ¥10.88B for Digital Entertainment against ¥1.26B for Sports — roughly 80% of profit still comes from the Monster Strike-led segment — and the Sports EBITDA margin of about 5.6% sits far below Digital Entertainment's roughly 55%.[40][99] Monster Strike is a mature IP — US$11.4B lifetime gross, ~99% domestic — now offsetting MAU decline with higher ARPU.[11][55] Revenue is diversifying while the profit source stays concentrated; when that state actually reduces dependence on a single IP is the thing to observe (implication).

  3. NOW

Australian regulation is settled — what follows is implementation cost and whether the register gets built

The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill 2026, introduced on 2 July 2026, went through a Senate committee report recommending passage on 17 August (with dissents from Senator Pocock and the Greens), a government-Coalition deal on 18 August, and passed Parliament on 20 August.[116][114][115] The enacted rules are tighter than the bill as introduced. The daily blackout starts at 05:00 and runs to 20:30, live-sport advertising is banned from 15 minutes before an event to 5 minutes after it ends, television is capped at three spots an hour inside the window, radio is barred during the school run, broadcasting odds is prohibited, and advertising in venues and on uniforms and endorsement by athletes, celebrities and influencers are banned. Direct marketing of inducements is barred for 14 days after sign-up, for three months after a BetStop deregistration and indefinitely for at-risk customers; commissions and bonuses tied to customer acquisition are banned; and streaming services are regulated like free-to-air television. Commencement is 1 January 2027.[115][94][70] The early-August uncertainty, when the bill lacked support and withdrawal looked possible,[52] resolved toward stricter rules rather than softer ones, and the VIP inducement practices described at the 3 August hearing[64] entered the text as conduct rules rather than as advertising caps. What remains uncertain is implementation. The ACMA-run advertising opt-out register is funded by a cost-recovery levy on licensed operators and is reported as needing up to 12 months to build, so it may not be live on 1 January 2027.[116] With Australian revenue down 4% and statutory EBITDA down 30%,[15][103] advertising slots and inducements narrow together while a new levy and new operating duties are added. What to observe is customer-acquisition cost either side of commencement, and the design and timing of the register (implication).

  4. LONG

Canada's growth is casino-led, and the pace of expansion is subordinate to provincial policy timetables

PointsBet's Australian revenue fell 4% while Canada grew 13%, iGaming net win 28% and Ontario 35%, with the increase almost entirely casino/iGaming-derived; Canadian sports-betting turnover fell 39%.[15][16][103][85] In the latest complete month, July 2026, Ontario set a record C$9.88B of handle (+4% on the month) on operator revenue of C$413.6M (+3%), about 80% of it from casino, across 48 licensed operators and 83 live sites, with 1.365M active accounts and average revenue per account of C$303; Hard Rock Bet entered in July, its first market outside the US.[142] The mix is the notable part: July held the knockout stage and final of the FIFA World Cup (11 June-19 July), yet sports handle fell 4% on the month and the growth came from casino (+6%). June had handle of C$9.458B (+30.3% year on year) and revenue of C$400.6M (+30.6%) with casino at 79% of revenue; in March, with no tournament, it was 82%; first-half revenue was C$1.86B (+30%).[48][66][36][109] Alberta, which opened on 13 July 2026, drew about 50 registered operators with ~22 platforms live on day one, and majors including FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365 and BetMGM entered simultaneously; tax is 20% of net gaming revenue (2% to First Nations, 1% to responsible gambling) and the regulator frames the goal as channelization, lifting the regulated share from 32% toward 87%.[39][54] In BC the new Gaming Control Act took effect on 13 April 2026 and IGCO was created, but BCLC's PlayNow remains the only legal online casino and private admission is undecided.[91][23] However well developed the Bede Gaming casino re-platform[31] and the owned trading and risk technology[5] are, the addressable footprint is subordinate to each province's legislative and regulatory calendar — so the duality of a fast-growing category that concentrates addiction risk and responsible-gambling obligations sits alongside an exogenous ceiling on pace (implication).

  5. NOW

Harm-minimization rules now reach betting and gacha at the same time

Japan's online-casino crackdown, addiction law and blocking deliberations,[72][73][108] Australia's advertising reform with per-login BetStop checks,[94][70] and the EU's Digital Fairness Act (proposal due Q4 2026) alongside the European Parliament's loot-box resolution[110][81] all converge on a common frame that treats monetized chance and betting as social harms to be guarded against. India banned RMG outright and then moved to a registration regime under the Online Gaming Rules 2026 (gazetted 22 April, in force 1 May) administered by OGAI, and on 27 May 2026 the Supreme Court upheld state bans, holding there is no fundamental right to gambling; because the regulator determines category and misclassification carries criminal penalties, Strike World must be registered and run as an online social game with no stake and no real-money reward.[75][112][93][111] Requirements such as deposit limits, self-exclusion, odds disclosure and age verification reach betting operations (PointsBet, TIPSTAR) and gacha operations (Monster Strike, Strike World) simultaneously.[4][13] Because both sit inside the same company at MIXI, tightening on one side raises the compliance expectation applied to the other, and how far accountability frameworks such as a second consecutive MSCI ESG 'AA' and the human-capital management logic model connect to concrete harm-prevention measures becomes part of the assessment (implication).[56][17] India's rationale runs through public health as well. The Supreme Court's 27 May 2026 judgment said every mobile phone has in effect become a gambling house, citing addiction, depression and suicide, and the same day it upheld 28% GST on a supply basis with retrospective effect.[147][148] Those rulings address games played for money and do not reach stake-free designs, but a petition seeking to ban gambling platforms presented as social games or e-sports has been pending since November 2025.[150] The regulatory question common to betting and gacha now extends to where the product categories are drawn.

Capital allocation — a non-core exit, an extended investment function and a changed return policy in one quarter

In June 2026 MIXI resolved to sell its entire 26.22% bitbank stake (¥15.59B consideration, ~¥12.23B extraordinary gain, execution due October 2026)[42][43] and, in the same month, took over part of GREE's domestic VC fund business for about ¥30M to expand its investment capability.[47] On 31 July it moved the payout-ratio target from 20% to 40% and lifted the annual dividend to ¥155, taking the yield to 5.35% against the ¥2,896 close (4.31% under the prior forecast).[41][67] The revised EPS of ¥383.99 anchoring that 40% includes the one-off, and applying the same ¥155 to the pre-revision ¥13.5B net income — using the ~65.1M shares implied by ¥383.99 EPS on ¥25.0B — gives a payout of roughly 75% (calculation from disclosed figures). With monetizing a non-core stake, extending the investment function and raising the return level all falling together while PointsBet goodwill is still amortizing, where the cash goes — returns, investment or debt reduction — and where the return level settles on a recurring-earnings basis become visible in the FY2028 plan, once the one-off drops out (implication).

Non-game, non-betting revenue (FamilyAlbum / Lifestyle) is profitable but small against Japanese demographics

FamilyAlbum has 30M users worldwide, 40% overseas and 20% in North America, with overseas new-family adds outpacing Japan.[34][18] In Q1 FY2027 Lifestyle turned profitable at ¥4.36B revenue (+24.5%) and ¥0.26B segment profit, driven by paid premium tiers, photo prints, the Mimamori GPS tracker, advertising and minimo, and in July 2026 it launched a referral programme with Rakuten Travel.[40][46] Even so the segment is about 9% of group revenue and roughly 2% of segment profit, and neither the India CVC[25] nor STRIKE WORLD[38] has a disclosed revenue contribution. Domestically, 2025 births fell to 671,236 with a total fertility rate of 1.14, a tenth consecutive record low that thins both the gacha cohort and new-family formation.[106] FamilyAlbum also handles sensitive family and infant data across 175 countries and regions under Japan's APPI plus GDPR and COPPA-type children's rules, so a rising overseas share is directly a rising compliance load.[9] How large a revenue base independent of Japanese demographics becomes is, for now, unsupported by scale (implication).

The AI benefit rests on self-reporting while its environmental load lands in Scope 3

MIXI reports over 99% company-wide AI utilization and roughly ¥1B a year in cost savings, and created a Chief AI Officer role effective 1 August 2026.[102] These are self-reported figures with no third-party verification, and industry pushback against generative AI remains strong (52% called it harmful in the GDC 2026 survey).[83] At the same time, disclosed Scope 1+2 emissions rose from 2,932 t-CO2e in FY2024 to 4,437 t-CO2e in FY2026, while about 96.8% of total emissions sit in Scope 3 — which itself rose 36.6% in FY2026, to 134,983 t-CO2e, and which the third-party assurance obtained in August 2026 does not cover.[105][119] The benefit of AI adoption is asserted by the company as a P&L cost saving, while its compute load surfaces mainly as supply-chain emissions — the effect and the load land on different ledgers (implication).

One loss read on two ledgers — the weak Australian business and the zero company tax are the same fact

On 17 August 2026 the Australia Institute reported, from ATO records, that the five largest online wagering companies won A$5.4B in 2023-24 while paying A$0.1B in company tax — 2% of what they won — and that Tabcorp, bet365 and PointsBet won A$1.3B between them and paid none, with bet365 and PointsBet never having paid.[117] This is not proof of avoidance. PointsBet disclosed a statutory loss of A$26.6M for the nine months to March 2026, normalized EBITDA of -A$0.8M, Australian revenue down 4% and statutory EBITDA down 30%, so an absence of taxable profit is consistent with the losses it reports.[103][15] What this layer records financially as a contracting Australian business is presented in policy debate as an operator that generates social cost while carrying no company tax. The same numbers are read as financial weakness and as an accountability question. Publication fell in the week Parliament passed the advertising reform on 20 August, as licensees take on a new cost-recovery levy and new operating duties.[115][116] In the same month the operator put forward a different measure: at PointsBet Group's annual general meeting on 25 August its chief executive said the company's tax and regulatory burden equals about 50% of revenue.[130] One side counts company income tax, the other a total burden including state wagering taxes, product fees and regulatory costs, so 'zero' and 'half of revenue' can hold at once, and neither carries shown third-party verification. What to observe is which way the argument moves once the Australian business returns to profit and taxable income appears, and which of the two counts becomes the reference in policy debate (implication).

Regulation did not stop at the federal advertising law; it is stacking as state conduct rules

Australia's federal law passed on 20 August 2026, setting how much advertising may run, when, and how inducements may be direct-marketed, with commencement on 1 January 2027.[115][114] Five days later New South Wales published a separate package on a different axis: A$95.2M over four years covering a statewide self-exclusion register using facial recognition at gaming-room entrances, third-party exclusion applications, a move to account-based play, a ban on VIP programmes, express consent for direct marketing, disclosure duties for affiliates and influencers and restricted commissions on higher-risk products — reaching both land-based venues and online wagering, with no legislative timetable given.[129] Where the Commonwealth decides how much may be advertised, the state decides who is identified, who is excluded and how they may be solicited. The two layers apply to the same customer and the same transaction at once. Read with the age-verification penalties that landed in the same month in Ontario (AGCO, C$120,000) and NSW (NICC, A$2.25M combined),[65][118] what an operator has to manage is shifting from advertising slots to identity checks, exclusion integration and solicitation records. Licensees are pressing for enforcement to be aimed at the illegal offshore market instead — PointsBet's CEO estimates it at about 30% of the licensed market[130] — so the argument is about where regulation lands rather than how much of it there is. What to observe is how state and federal requirements are integrated on one customer-identity stack, and customer-acquisition cost either side of commencement (implication). One measured effect of state measures on revenue is now on the record. In its results for the year to 30 June 2026, The Star Entertainment Group reported gaming revenue at The Star Sydney down 9.1% to A$499.8M under mandatory carded play and cash limits in NSW, with the statutory loss narrowing from A$428M to A$307.3M and an AUSTRAC penalty still unresolved.[146] These are land-based figures, not a forecast for online. But since the NSW package extends account-based play and a statewide exclusion register to online betting, the fact that harm reduction and operator revenue moved as a trade-off in this one case is likely to frame the argument after commencement.

The store-fee assumption moved first in Japanese law, not in a US ruling

This layer has treated the store-fee variable as the US Apple v Epic case, argued in the term beginning October 2026, yet about 99% of Monster Strike revenue is Japanese.[11][107] In Japan the Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on 18 December 2025, and the JFTC, having designated Apple, iTunes K.K. and Google, published their compliance reports on 27 July 2026.[137][138] Under Apple's Japan terms, digital goods sold inside the App Store carry a 21% commission (10% in some cases) with a separate 5% payment-processing fee only where Apple In-App Purchase is used; a web purchase through an out-of-app link carries 15% for seven days after the tap (10% in those same cases); and an alternative marketplace carries a 5% Core Technology Fee.[139][140] The platform's share of the same yen of spend therefore varies by roughly ten points with the route chosen. That structure touches both the direct bank payment added to the Monster Strike web shop on 6 August 2026, with an uplifted reward,[62] and the winding down of the MIXI M prepaid wallet.[135] The direction is not one-way, however: external billing moves payment handling, tax remittance and age gating onto the developer (no external purchase offers to under-13s, a parental gate for 13- to 17-year-olds),[140] so a lower fee arrives together with higher operating cost and compliance responsibility. MIXI discloses neither the billing split by route nor which terms apply, so no saving can be computed externally. What to observe is whether a route change shows up in Digital Entertainment's cost of sales and SG&A, and whether the terms already settled in Japan and those that follow the US ruling converge (implication).

PointsBet's growth is casino-weighted: Australian revenue fell 4% while Canada grew 13% and iGaming net win 28%, and Canadian sports-betting turnover fell 39%.[15][103] Ontario set a record C$9.88B of handle in July 2026, with about 80% of operator revenue coming from casino.[142] The faster-growing category is also the one that concentrates addiction risk and responsible-gambling duties, and the addressable footprint stays subordinate to each province's legislative and regulatory calendar (implication).

The operating-level plan is unchanged, and the ¥19.5B figure is about -12.4% against FY2026's ¥22.256B actual, so a full-year operating decline is still guided. Competitive conditions in India's free-to-play space changed in August 2026. Dream11, the largest RMG operator, announced on 22 August that it was discontinuing paid contests and paid subscriptions and refocusing entirely on free contests, sports content and fan engagement, refunding active subscription fees within 72 hours.[123] The company, which lost about 95% of revenue under the 2025 Online Gaming Act,[87] has now let go of monetized chance altogether and moved to the sports-entertainment side. … That puts an established brand with a very large user base directly into the free-to-play acquisition contest Strike World sits in. In a market where statute removed the highest-willingness-to-pay cohort, the remaining axis of competition is discretionary time rather than spend. On 6 August 2026 MIXI added 'Minna no Ginko Kantan Kessai', a direct bank-account payment method requiring no card registration, to the Monster Strike web shop — its own billing route outside the app stores. … The method adds 0.5 reward points per ¥100 spent over standard methods, with a 10% cashback capped at ¥1,000 from 6 to 31 August. The company frames it as an added purchase experience and makes no reference to app-store fees. Still, in a mature IP increasingly dependent on ARPU, widening an owned billing route changes both the share retained on a given transaction and where customer data sits, and the reward differential is designed to steer users onto that route.[62][40]

  22. 🇯🇵
The economics of that route changed under the Mobile Software Competition Act, fully in force since 18 December 2025. 1. 🇯🇵 Q1 FY2027 (Apr–Jun 2026, reported 31 July): revenue ¥47.073B (+50.3%), EBITDA ¥8.6B (+125.0%), operating income ¥5.428B (+102.8%), ordinary income ¥5.652B (+179.3%) and net income ¥5.825B (+311.7%), with every segment up on both lines. The net-income jump includes a deferred-tax asset recognized on the decision to sell the bitbank stake, and the prior-year comparison base predates PointsBet consolidation, so most of the growth rate reflects the widened consolidation scope. Segment revenue was Sports ¥21.673B (+94.5%), Digital Entertainment ¥19.532B (+21.5%), Lifestyle ¥4.363B (+24.5%) and Investment ¥1.502B (+158.1%) — the first quarter in which Sports was the largest segment by revenue. Segment profit, however, was Digital Entertainment ¥10.881B (+39.5%), Sports ¥1.258B (+108.0%), Lifestyle ¥0.261B (from a ¥69M loss) and Investment ¥0.86B, so roughly 80% of segment profit still comes from Digital Entertainment. The Sports segment's EBITDA margin of about 5.6% sits far below Digital Entertainment's (roughly 55%): the shift in the revenue mix and the shift in the profit mix are not moving at the same pace.[40][41][99] as of 2026-06 · superseded by ↓
  2. 🇦🇺 Ontario, where PointsBet operates, recorded its highest handle since the market opened in the latest complete month, July 2026: C$9.88B wagered (+4% month on month) with operator gross gaming revenue of C$413.6M (+3%). Casino took C$8.78B of handle (89% of the total, +6% on the month) and C$330.4M of revenue (80%); sports betting C$992M of handle (10%, -4%) and C$77.8M of revenue (19%); peer-to-peer poker C$116M of handle (1%, -8%) and C$5.3M of revenue (1%). There were 48 licensed operators across 83 live sites, 1.365M active accounts (+3% on the month) and average revenue per account of C$303. Hard Rock Bet entered Ontario in July, its first market outside the United States.[142] The mix is counterintuitive: July contained the knockout stage and final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup (11 June-19 July), yet sports handle fell 4% month on month and the growth came from casino (+6%). June had handle of C$9.458B (+30.3% year on year) and revenue of C$400.6M (+30.6%), with casino at 88% of handle and 79% of revenue; in March 2026, with no tournament running, casino was 82% of revenue.[48][36][66][109] First-half 2026 revenue was C$1.86B (+30% year on year).[32] Gambling.com reported that four years after the April 2022 opening more than 90% of play sits on regulated sites, the precedent behind Alberta's stated channelization goal of moving from 32% to 87%.[66] A casino-weighted revenue base grows faster but is more sensitive to problem gambling and therefore more exposed to tighter consumer-protection rules. The figures come from secondary reporting of iGaming Ontario's monthly data tables.[141][85] as of 2026-07 · superseded by ↓
  3. 🇯🇵 Monster Strike had grossed US$11.4B on mobile at its 11-year mark (Sensor Tower data reported April 2025), roughly 99% of it in Japan. Calendar 2024 revenue of US$570.7M marked the post-peak phase, with falling MAU and rising ARPU. In full-year FY2026 the core line fell 8.5% to ¥26.2B on that MAU decline, while Q1 FY2027 Digital Entertainment revenue was ¥19.5B (+21.5%) with EBITDA of ¥10.8B (+39.5%), which MIXI attributes to higher ARPU from IP collaborations and monetization improvements. The title ranked first in Japan's weekly domestic mobile revenue ranking for 16–22 July 2026, with revenue +7% and downloads +14% week on week after a Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration that began 14 July — still among the country's top earners in maturity. With the user base of a franchise that earned more than $10B lifetime shrinking, revenue growth depends on spend per user, which raises the segment's relative sensitivity to regulation of chance-based monetization such as gacha.[11][35][55][27][99][78] The same operating pattern continued through August 2026: a free 'Again Gacha' of up to 200 draws per player from noon on 10 August, then a first collaboration with the anime Blue Lock from 16 August.[63][125] No MAU figure has been disclosed since Q1, so how the free draws and the IP tie-ups split between ARPU and contact frequency cannot be checked externally. The weekly rank has since moved: for 13–19 August 2026 Monster Strike placed fourth in Japan's mobile-revenue ranking, up from sixth the week before, with revenue +4% and downloads +34% week on week, while Fate/Grand Order held first (+62%). The number-one position seen in July has not persisted.[131] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  4. 🇮🇳 Against Monster Strike's ~99%-domestic revenue concentration, MIXI soft-launched the global 'STRIKE WORLD' in India in February 2026 and began full commercial operation on 16 April 2026, monetizing via gacha, battle passes and in-app ads. Overseas monetization of the Monster Strike IP has not taken hold in the past, and as of August 2026 no revenue contribution has been broken out in results disclosure.[38][11] In a Yomiuri Shimbun interview published on 11 July 2026, President Hiroki Kimura said MIXI is considering taking Monster Strike to Europe and wants to do so 'as soon as possible', and expressed appetite for expanding its IP business — with no timing, target countries or investment scale given and nothing in company disclosure.[60] What can be observed externally on the European side is an exhibit, not a rollout: MIXI exhibited at Japan Expo Paris 2026 on 9–12 July, leading with playable Strike World demos and a collaboration-IP photo wall alongside FamilyAlbum and the original anime titles Rinkai! and Oshiro Bots. No indicator that would let an outsider judge a rollout — local availability, language support, investment — has been given.[132] The Indian market receiving the rollout has 500M+ mobile gamers but shrank sharply after the ban: per Lumikai's "State of India Interactive Media 2025" the video-games market excluding RMG was ~US$1.5B in CY2025 (+17% YoY) while the banned ~US$2.3B RMG layer disappeared.[96][76] A separate forecast still puts the old all-in market (including RMG) at ~US$3.5B in 2025 rising to ~US$12B by 2034, but that should be read as distinct from the effective post-ban TAM.[89] The size of that receiving population is also not moving in one direction. Reporting on Lumikai's data published on 23 March 2026 puts India's gamer base at 555M in CY2025, down 9% — 54 million people — from 609M a year earlier, while the ex-RMG market grew 17% to about US$1.5B and payer conversion held at 25%. Value rose as users fell, so the premise of a 500M-plus market still expanding does not hold as stated.[96] Correcting the ~99% domestic concentration therefore remains at the stage of stated management intent plus an overseas rollout with no disclosed contribution. as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  5. 🇯🇵 On 6 August 2026 MIXI added 'Minna no Ginko Kantan Kessai', a direct bank-account payment method requiring no card registration, to the Monster Strike web shop — its own billing route outside the app stores. The method adds 0.5 reward points per ¥100 spent over standard methods, with a 10% cashback capped at ¥1,000 from 6 to 31 August. The company frames it as an added purchase experience and makes no reference to app-store fees. Still, in a mature IP increasingly dependent on ARPU, widening an owned billing route changes both the share retained on a given transaction and where customer data sits, and the reward differential is designed to steer users onto that route.[62][40] The economics of that route changed under the Mobile Software Competition Act, fully in force since 18 December 2025. Under Apple's Japan terms the App Store commission on digital goods and services is 21% (10% for Small Business Program participants and for auto-renewing subscriptions from year two), with a separate 5% payment-processing fee only when Apple In-App Purchase is used; a web purchase reached through an out-of-app link carries a 15% Store Services Fee for seven days after the tap (10% for those programme participants), and distribution through an alternative marketplace carries a 5% Core Technology Fee.[139][140] The platform's take on the same yen of spend therefore moves by roughly ten points depending on the route, and a purchase made by going to the web shop directly, without passing through the app, carries none of these fees. MIXI discloses neither the share of billing that runs through the web shop nor which terms apply, so the effect on earnings cannot be computed from outside. as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  6. 🇯🇵 The Investment segment slowed in FY2026 to ¥4.44B (-22.0%) with segment profit -49.4%, reversing FY2025's +286.9% surge on a partial Timee-share sale and illustrating earnings that swing with equity markets. In Q1 FY2027 it recovered to ¥1.502B (+158.1%) with ¥0.86B segment profit on share disposals and fund income. On 22 June 2026 MIXI took over part of GREE Holdings' domestic VC fund business (acquiring the newly formed Gree Fund Investments and interests in GREE LP Fund JP2 for about ¥30M, completed 31 July 2026), expanding the capability of its subsidiary MIXI Capital Management. At Q1 the company put portfolio NAV at ¥59.7B, roughly 2.5x invested capital.[37][47][40][24] The investment subsidiary's role is no longer limited to taking over a domestic VC book. On 18 August 2026 MIXI Global Investments (MGI) opened entries for phase II of LVLZero Tokyo, an accelerator dedicated to taking Japanese indie games overseas. Entries close 6 September, the programme runs from October to December, five companies are selected, and support covers 100 days of mentoring across localization, trailer production and pitch refinement, connections to investors and publishers, and exhibition support at gamescom asia in Bangkok. MGI states that it takes neither equity nor publishing rights, describing this as a neutral stance that respects developer autonomy. Tokyo Game Dungeon is the operating partner and Active Gaming Media the knowledge partner.[120] MGI was formed in 2023 as an India-focused CVC; it now describes itself as investing globally as well as in India, and has added a non-investment form of involvement in which it holds no stake. 7. 🇯🇵 The shareholder-return policy was changed on 31 July 2026 from a target of 'a 20% consolidated payout ratio or 5% DOE' to 'a 40% consolidated payout ratio or 5% DOE'. Accordingly the FY2027 annual dividend forecast rose ¥30, from ¥125 (¥60 interim + ¥65 final) to ¥155 (¥60 + ¥95). FY2026 paid ¥120 (¥60 + ¥60), a 17th consecutive year of dividends. Buybacks are described as executed flexibly according to business conditions and outlook, with treasury stock held at around 5% of shares outstanding and the excess retired.[41][28] After the increase the yield is 5.35% against the ¥2,896 close on 31 July 2026 (4.31% under the previous forecast), and the annual dividend rises 29.1% in one year, from FY2026's ¥120 to ¥155.[67] But the revised EPS of ¥383.99 that forms the denominator of the '40% payout ratio' includes the ¥11.5B by which net-income guidance was raised on the bitbank sale, from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B. Using the pre-revision ¥13.5B forecast and the ~65.1M shares implied by ¥383.99 EPS on ¥25.0B of net income, the same ¥155 equates to roughly a 75% payout on an ex-one-off basis (calculation from disclosed figures). The high yield rests on both the policy change and the one-off gain, so its durability against a recurring earnings level will only be visible in later actuals.[42] The yield level has since moved with the share price. MIXI closed at ¥3,655 on 4 September 2026 (+¥20, +0.55%, from ¥3,635 the previous day), with the 52-week high raised to ¥3,825 against a 52-week low of ¥2,449 on 30 March, about 26% above the ¥2,896 close on 31 July, which puts the yield on the ¥155 annual dividend at 4.24%. The 5.35% quoted at the time of the increase is a 31 July price; the yield fell because the price rose by about a quarter, not because the payout changed.[122] as of 2026-09-04 · superseded by ↓
  8. 🇯🇵 Lifestyle turned profitable in Q1 FY2027 with revenue ¥4.363B (+24.5%), segment profit ¥0.261B and segment EBITDA also positive. FamilyAlbum grew through paid 'Mitene Premium', photo prints, the 'Mitene Mimamori GPS' tracker and advertising — its own revenue up 31% — while the salon-booking app minimo also reached profitability.[40][99] FamilyAlbum has 30M users worldwide, more than 40% overseas and about 20% North American, making the US its largest overseas market.[34] On 30 June 2026 MIXI launched 'Mitene Family Partner', a family-referral programme, and on 1 July signed its first contract with Rakuten Group (Rakuten Travel), delivering in-app travel campaigns timed to family milestones under a co-marketing structure.[46] MIXI targets more than ¥40B for the 'WeTime / FamilyAlbum economic sphere' by raising the subscription and advertising mix, but that is a company target with no external verification of attainment, and how durably the non-game 'connection' businesses monetize remains a matter to monitor.[33] The billing surface widened again. On 3 September 2026 FamilyAlbum added 'Kanahei's Small Animals' collaboration designs to its comment and reaction stickers and introduced a one-off purchase option at ¥380 a set for users with no monthly plan; subscribers to the ¥220-a-month sticker plan pay ¥280 for the same collaboration set.[145] The design opens a paying entry point to non-subscribers, adding one-off purchases outside the paid features that carried the segment into profit. 9. The currency tailwind has narrowed. The BOJ raised its policy rate to 1.0% on 16 June 2026 — the highest since 1995 — by 7-1, then held at 1.0% by 8-1 on 31 July (one member arguing for 1.25%), cutting its FY2026 inflation forecast to 2.5% and lifting its growth forecast to 0.6%.[92][95] USD/JPY came off the ¥161-162 range of July, passed about ¥159.33 on 27 August and firmed to about ¥156.25 on 4 September 2026 (-0.95% on the month, +6.05% on the year).[124] The policy rate is still 1.0% and the next policy meeting is 18 September 2026; markets expect a quarter-point rise that month and another in December, with a board member raising the possibility of consecutive increases and the governor saying policy should weigh upside price risks more heavily.[151] A stronger yen alongside further tightening thins the translation tailwind further: the effect of compressing PointsBet's AUD- and CAD-denominated costs is weaker than in July, and the year-on-year uplift from translating overseas revenue is fading. as of 2026-09-04 · superseded by ↓
  10. 🇦🇺 On 17 August 2026 the Australia Institute published an analysis of Australian Taxation Office records finding that the five largest online wagering companies won A$5.4B in 2023-24 but reported only A$0.4B of profit and paid A$0.1B in company tax — 2% of what they won. Three of them, Tabcorp, bet365 and PointsBet, won A$1.3B between them and paid no company tax at all, and the analysis states that bet365 and PointsBet have never paid Australian company tax across a period in which they won more than A$2B combined. It also estimates at least A$600M of advertising and promotion (six times the company tax paid), about A$720M in fees to sporting bodies and up to A$700M in state gambling taxes.[117] This is not evidence of avoidance. PointsBet on a standalone basis reported a statutory loss of A$26.6M for the nine months to March 2026,[103] so an absence of taxable profit is consistent with the losses the company itself discloses. The contraction this layer already records as an operating weakness and the zero-company-tax line used as a political argument are the same numbers read from two ledgers. Publication landed in the week Parliament passed the advertising reforms, when the accountability question carries most weight. The operator offers a different measure. At PointsBet Group's annual general meeting on 25 August 2026, chief executive Andrew Catterall said the company's tax and regulatory burden equals about 50% of revenue.[130] The Australia Institute counts company income tax; the operator counts a total burden that includes state wagering taxes, product fees and regulatory costs, so the two are not measuring the same thing, and neither figure carries shown third-party verification. 'No company tax' and 'half of revenue' are not contradictory; they count different parts of the burden. as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  11. 🇯🇵 The share price has moved sharply since the end of July. MIXI closed at ¥3,655 on 4 September 2026, up ¥20 (+0.55%) on the session, with the 52-week high raised to ¥3,825 against a 52-week low of ¥2,449 on 30 March, and is quoted at a company-forecast PER of 9.52x, a PBR of 1.27x, a 4.24% dividend yield and a market capitalization of about ¥250.5B.[122] The forecast EPS of ¥383.99 behind that multiple, however, embeds the roughly ¥12.2B extraordinary gain on the bitbank sale, which is what lifted net-income guidance from ¥13.5B to ¥25.0B.[41][42] Using the ~65.1M shares implied by ¥383.99 EPS on ¥25.0B of net income, the pre-revision ¥13.5B forecast corresponds to about ¥207 of EPS, and the same ¥3,655 price is about 17.6x (calculation from disclosed figures). One price looks cheap on the plan that includes the one-off and ordinary on the plan that does not. Gambling's social harm is the centre of this axis. Australia has the world's highest per-capita losses, and the question is now how operators discharge new duties. Over 80% of Ontario market revenue is online casino, and help-seeking among young men rose sharply. Japan's online-casino arrests hit a record and births fell for a tenth year. In India minors' gaming has become a court question. FamilyAlbum's 30M users sit apart from gambling.

FamilyAlbum 'Mitene' reached 30M cumulative users worldwide on 7 May 2026. Overseas users exceed 40% of the total and North America alone is ~20%, across 7 languages and 175 countries and regions; overseas new-family adds outpace Japan, making North America and Western Europe the growth region and the US its largest overseas market. … It won the 7th Japan Childcare Support Award 2026 on 14 July 2026 and ran a 30M-user commemorative campaign from 31 July.[34][18][58] The core use case — sharing a child's growth with family — is not region-specific. With PointsBet's US business sold to Fanatics in 2023 and Monster Strike never having taken hold in North America, MIXI's US consumer touchpoint does not overlap with its betting products. That is a separation of products, not of corporate brand: FamilyAlbum and PointsBet carry the same MIXI name, so criticism of the betting business can reach the family service through the parent. No public measure exists of how far the two are actually separated.[33]

As of this review no revenue contribution has been shown in company disclosure and monetization remains unestablished.[6][33] as of 2026-09
  3. 🇯🇵 In Japan both public opinion and enforcement frame gambling as a social harm. An NPA survey estimated ~3.37M online-casino users wagering ~$8.4B a year,[73][72] and in 2025 a record 317 people were booked across 165 cases — the highest since the series began, up 38 people year on year with case counts 2.6x the prior 62 — roughly 70% of them in 'storeless' online play.[113] Wider public awareness of illegality and more citizen reports drove the increase, keeping social sensitivity toward betting-adjacent brands high. as of 2025-12

A shrinking birth cohort is a structural drag on both new gacha players and new families, and 2025 set another record. Per MHLW vital statistics, 671,236 Japanese nationals were born in 2025 (-14,937, or -2.2%, year on year) and the total fertility rate fell to 1.14 from 1.15 — both tenth consecutive record lows.[106] The pace of decline has eased relative to the 5%-plus annual drops of 2022–2024, but the direction has not changed. … The other end of the same curve is moving too. On 20 August 2026 MIXI began offering RomiCore SDK Beta, a development framework that connects its conversational robot Romi to outside devices and services. The stated uses include linking to scales and blood-pressure monitors, voice alerts triggered by bed sensors, and municipal systems for emergency contact and local event notices, aimed at healthcare and eldercare providers, local governments, research institutions and IoT or robotics companies.[121] Romi has no disclosed users or revenue, so this is not a claim about scale. Directionally it points a long-term-memory AI companion — discussed until now mainly through attachment and dependency in minors — at older adults on the monitored side of a care relationship. The questions of consent, monitoring and dependency do not disappear; the population they apply to changes.[61]

  5. Gacha monetization itself is becoming a target of regulation and public opinion. Strike World monetizes in India through gacha alongside paid reward tracks, special offers and in-game advertising,[111] while the EU has scheduled a Digital Fairness Act proposal for Q4 2026 aimed at addictive design and dark patterns,[110] and the European Parliament has called for loot-box rules in the context of protecting minors.[81] For a Digital Entertainment business leaning harder on ARPU, social sentiment and regulatory design point the same way. as of 2026-07
  6. Developer and user sentiment toward generative AI has soured, which forms the reputational backdrop to any company-wide AI push. In the GDC 2026 survey, 52% of responding developers called generative AI harmful to the industry.[83] MIXI created a Chief AI Officer role (Tatsuma Murase) effective August 1, 2026 to own company-wide AI strategy and AI governance,[102] so its productivity claims operate in an environment where industry pushback coexists with them. as of 2026-08

Consolidating PointsBet changed the scale of the workforce discontinuously. On MIXI's non-financial data (consolidated), headcount rose from 1,717 in FY2025 to 2,116 in FY2026 — 399 people, or 23.2% — and is roughly 1.5x FY2022's 1,432 over four years. … FY2026 hiring was 207 (218 in FY2025) and turnover 7.5% (9.5% in FY2025), so most of the increase comes from a widened consolidation scope rather than recruitment. Women are 30.8% of employees (27.4% in FY2022), 18.3% of managers and above (14.1% in FY2023), and male take-up of parental leave (non-consolidated) is 52.9% (29.3% in FY2022).[105] Headcount grew more than a fifth while FY2026 operating income fell 16.3%,[37] which takes operating profit per employee from about ¥15.5M to about ¥10.5M (calculation from disclosed figures). No outcome has been disclosed to date.[25][26][38] The demand structure it entered was, however, transformed by the RMG ban: Dream11 lost about 95% of revenue, MPL cut more than 60% of its Indian workforce, and 3,000-plus jobs went sector-wide. Strike World sits in the free-to-play space that audiences moved toward once monetized rivals disappeared — but that is not the same as demand transferring intact, since the market also lost its highest-willingness-to-pay cohort by statute.[87][75] The judiciary's language is blunt. In the 27 May 2026 judgment upholding the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka bans, the Supreme Court (Justices Pardiwala and Mahadevan) said every mobile phone has in effect become a gambling house and framed addiction, depression and gambling-related suicides as a public-health crisis. In its business overview MIXI places MIXI M in the 'Other' category as an 'integrated platform for ID and payments', describing it as linking personal, payment and asset information that previously sat inside separate services.[136] The consumer-facing implementation, however, is being wound down. Per the official site, MM gift cards ended sales on 8 January 2025 (cards already bought remain usable) and premium membership stopped new registrations and auto-renewal on 1 July 2025 before closing at 23:59 on 1 August 2025. As of 27 August 2026 the site's front page carries a service-termination notice for the MIXI M app (prepaid card) and a MIXI CASH balance-refund application. The prepaid balance 'MIXI MONEY' is issued by MIXI, Inc., is usable at MIXI M member merchants, and is shown as expiring three years after the last change in balance. The termination notice page refuses external retrieval (HTTP 403), so the final closure date could not be verified here.[135] In the same month of August 2026 the Monster Strike web shop added an external direct bank payment method, 'Minna no Ginko Kantan Kessai',[62] so the centre of gravity in payments is moving from an owned wallet toward store billing and partner-bank rails. An owned prepaid instrument carries balance-management, identity-verification and refund duties, so contraction narrows the compliance perimeter and, at the same time, reduces how much cross-service payment data the group holds itself. MIXI M discloses no users, transaction volume or revenue, so the effect on results cannot be measured externally. The menu of payment routes did widen on the regulatory side: following the Mobile Software Competition Act's full entry into force on 18 December 2025, Apple permits distribution through alternative app marketplaces and payment methods outside the App Store in Japan from iOS 26.2.[139][140] Retiring an owned wallet while adding an external bank payment shows that operating a stored-value instrument and using the externally opened payment routes are separate choices. MIXI discloses neither which route it uses nor in what proportion. as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓

Five jurisdictions rewrite monetization assumptions together. Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act moved store fees, its addiction law bans online casinos, and blocking waits on a review of other measures. Australia's advertising law commences January 2027, operators must flag at-risk customers, and New South Wales adds conduct rules. In Canada PointsBet carries a proposed suspension. India's regime is before the Supreme Court, and Apple v Epic will not be argued before 2027.

  1. 🇦🇺 PointsBet holds gambling licences in Australia and Canada, so ongoing compliance and oversight underpin operations. Betr Entertainment held 19.9% at the close of the takeover and declined the offer, leaving legal questions around full integration and minority-shareholder management, and PointsBet Holdings remains ASX-listed. Betr's current holding is not verified in this review.[5][14] as of 2025-09

Age verification is no longer an Ontario-only issue. On 21 August 2026 the NSW Independent Casino Commission fined Crown Sydney A$1.75M and The Star Sydney A$500,000 — A$2.25M combined — after a 16-year-old repeatedly reached gaming floors using fraudulent identification. … The breaches ran from April to August 2025, and Crown Sydney allowed 19 entries and served the minor complimentary alcohol. Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford said effective identity verification is not only a tool for protecting minors but is also needed to detect fraud and criminal activity.[118] In the same month Ontario's AGCO fined Betty Gaming C$120,000 over age-verification failures,[65] so comparable duties were enforced against land-based and online operators, in Australia and in Canada, at the same time. PointsBet re-platformed its Canadian casino onto Bede Gaming in April 2026, so verifying age-gating and self-exclusion integration across a platform change is exactly the area this enforcement stance covers.[31]

Legal resolution of store fees has been pushed back. In December 2025 the Ninth Circuit upheld the anti-steering contempt finding against Apple while discussing scope for cost-based fees on external links,[82] and on June 30, 2026 the Supreme Court granted certiorari, agreeing to decide in the term beginning October 2026 whether civil contempt can rest on violating an injunction's spirit rather than its literal terms. … Until the ruling, Apple cannot charge commission on external payment links in the US App Store, and the permissible fee level is left to separate district-court proceedings.[107] Unit economics for F2P and gacha, including Monster Strike and Strike World, remain unsettled.

Licensed operators argue that the rules will only work if the illegal market is enforced against. At PointsBet Group's annual general meeting on 25 August 2026, chief executive Andrew Catterall asked the government to cut payment channels to illegal offshore bookmakers through banks and payment providers, to force faster removal of unlicensed gambling advertising from digital platforms — 'real-time takedown is important' — and to tighten rules on Australia-based influencers taking commissions from offshore operators, citing Canada's restrictions on data providers as a model. … He put the offshore market at about 30% of the licensed domestic wagering market and said it was growing considerably faster.[130] That 30% is the operator's own estimate with no independent verification shown, and the argument that tighter rules push volume offshore is also an argument that serves the interest of the regulated firm making it. In the same month the Australia Institute argued that licensed operators generate social cost while carrying no company tax,[117] so the same package draws opposite readings — that enforcement is too weak, and that the burden falls in the wrong place. Both readings share a shortage of verifiable public data.

  7. Canada's provincial regulated markets are expanding. Alberta opened its regulated iGaming market on 13 July 2026, conditioned on AGLC registration plus a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation; registered operators were reported at between roughly 28 and 50, of which ~22 platforms were live on day one, and PointsBet is among the AGLC-registered operators. … Tax is 20% of net gaming revenue, of which 2% goes to First Nations and 1% to responsible-gambling initiatives, with age verification, deposit and time limits, centralized self-exclusion and RG Check accreditation mandatory from launch. The regulator frames the objective as channelization — lifting the regulated share from a stated 32% toward 87% — rather than market growth.[39][54][29][30]

Reported industry exposure to back taxes runs to about ₹2.5 lakh crore, and several operators filed review petitions in July 2026.[148] The same judgment invoked a public-health crisis of addiction, depression and suicide,[147] so taxation and prohibition rest on one public-health rationale. On 4 November 2025 the Court also sought the Union government's response to a petition seeking a ban on platforms that offer gambling while presenting as social games or e-sports.[150] Registration with OGAI is an entry procedure; where the 'online social game' category ends is still before the courts. as of 2026-09 · superseded by ↓
  6. 🇯🇵 Given where MIXI's revenue sits, store-fee terms changed in Japan before they changed in the United States. The Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software (Mobile Software Competition Act, MSCA) took full effect on 18 December 2025, and on 26 March 2025 the Japan Fair Trade Commission designated Apple Inc. (mobile OS, app store, browser), iTunes K.K. (app store) and Google LLC (mobile OS, app store, browser, search engine).[137] On 27 July 2026 the JFTC published the three designated companies' compliance reports covering 18 December 2025 to 31 March 2026, stating expressly that the published content represents the companies' own views rather than the Commission's assessment; a channel for reporting suspected violations is also open.[138] Apple announced on 17 December 2025 that, for Japan from iOS 26.2, it would allow distribution through alternative app marketplaces, payment methods outside the App Store and alternative browser engines, and required developers to accept the updated licence agreement by 17 March 2026.[139] Japan's fee structure is a 21% App Store commission on digital goods and services (10% for Small Business Program participants and for auto-renewing subscriptions from year two), a separate 5% payment-processing fee only where Apple In-App Purchase is used, a 15% Store Services Fee on web purchases reached through an out-of-app link within seven days of the tap (10% for those programme participants), and a 5% Core Technology Fee for distribution through an alternative marketplace. Child-safety terms bar external purchase offers to under-13s and require a parental gate for 13- to 17-year-olds.[140] Because about 99% of Monster Strike revenue is Japanese,[11] the outcome of Apple v Epic, which the US Supreme Court hears in the term beginning October 2026, does not reach these terms.[107] MIXI does not disclose whether or how far it uses alternative marketplaces or external billing, so the actual change in fee burden cannot be verified from outside. as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓
  7. 🇦🇺 Australian regulation did not end with the federal advertising law. On 25 August 2026 the Minns government in New South Wales released a gambling reform package it describes as a key election commitment, allocating A$95.2M (US$68.1M) over four years and covering both land-based venues and online wagering. The main measures are a statewide self-exclusion register using mandatory facial recognition at gaming-room entrances, replacing the present venue-by-venue system; a third-party exclusion scheme letting family, friends, venues and police initiate an exclusion; a rise in the forfeiture rate on poker-machine entitlement transfers from one-in-three to one-in-two across the 87,000 machines in 2,100 clubs and hotels, with a sinking statewide cap; and a move toward account-based play requiring a two-year Central Monitoring System upgrade. On marketing it bans VIP programmes, bars gambling advertising on state and local-council assets, requires express consent before direct marketing by phone, email or text, imposes disclosure duties on affiliates and influencers and restricts commissions on higher-risk products. The state puts moderate-risk problem gambling at 3.1% of adults and high-risk at 0.9%. No legislative timetable was given.[129] Where the federal law sets how much advertising may run and when, the state regulates conduct — how customers are identified, excluded and solicited. For PointsBet the state requirements stack on top of the 1 January 2027 federal commencement, and the VIP ban and express-consent rule overlap in subject matter with the federal inducement provisions.[115] as of 2026-08 · superseded by ↓

MIXI discloses along TCFD lines, holds an MSCI 'AA' rating for a second year and sits in all six GPIF-adopted domestic ESG indices. Third-party assurance covers only Scope 1 and 2, about 3% of emissions; Scope 3, about 97%, grew 36.6% in FY2026 to 134,983 t-CO2e. Emissions per ¥1B of revenue rose about 22%, so scale has not diluted intensity. The power behind AI compute and always-on platforms sits largely outside direct control, and no target covers Scope 3.

As Sports scales, physical venues grow. MIXI's spectator-sports assets — FC Tokyo, Chiba Jets and LaLa arena TOKYO-BAY, run through a joint venture with Mitsui Fudosan — add venue operating energy and event waste to its ESG scope alongside the digital business, and facility-owning operations have physical and seasonal emissions drivers, and a different disclosure accountability, from a software-centric business. … The move to B.PREMIER from the 2026-27 season (26 clubs, tipping off 22 September 2026) changes the premises for fixture volume and travel, which can in turn affect footprint accounting on the spectator side.[79][10][9][57] The football calendar shift means FC Tokyo's season now opens in August, when Japanese household electricity demand peaks (the 2026-27 season began on 7 August). Alongside it MIXI, as a declared participant in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's HTT framework (reduce, generate, store electricity), is running an 'HTT shared-viewing campaign' at four HUB pubs in Tokyo from 8 August to 12 September 2026, consolidating what would be many separate household viewings into one venue to cut air-conditioning and lighting use. No quantified saving is disclosed; it is a communications-led demand-consolidation measure.[68][69]

MIXI provides climate disclosure aligned with TCFD and, after first earning an 'AA' MSCI ESG rating in September 2024, announced on 31 March 2026 that it had retained 'AA' for a second consecutive year. … It is also a constituent of the MSCI Japan ESG Select Leaders Index and the MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN). The evidence behind the disclosure has also moved a step. On 18 August 2026 MIXI announced its first third-party assurance over climate-related information, covering FY2026 (1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026) governance and risk management and GHG emissions Scope 1 and Scope 2 (market-based and location-based), for MIXI and its consolidated subsidiaries. … The announcement gives no emissions figures.[119] Index inclusion shows that practice and disclosure clear an external assessment threshold; assurance addresses the reliability of the disclosed numbers themselves. They are separate measures.

  5. On the company's own disclosures, both emissions and energy use are trending up. Per MIXI's non-financial data, Scope 1 moved from 114 t-CO2e in FY2024 to 423 t in FY2025 and 794 t in FY2026, while Scope 2 went 2,818 t → 3,850 t → 3,643 t, taking Scope 1+2 from 2,932 t to 4,272 t to 4,437 t — roughly 1.5x in two years. … Total energy consumption likewise rose about 1.5x, from 6,722 MWh in FY2024 to 10,190 MWh in FY2025 (electricity 8,137 MWh, city gas 1,579 MWh, gasoline 475 MWh); city gas appearing from FY2025 is consistent with non-office facility operations entering scope.
    as of 2026-08
  6. That process is complete: on 18 August 2026 MIXI announced its first third-party assurance, covering FY2026 governance and risk management and Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions on both market-based and location-based methods, with no figures given in the announcement.[119] The assurance covers Scope 1 and 2 only and does not extend to Scope 3. as of 2026-08
  7. Most of the climate exposure sits in Scope 3, and that number grew sharply in FY2026. The disclosure has since been updated: FY2026 Scope 3 is 134,983 t-CO2e against total emissions of 139,420 t-CO2e, about 96.8% of the total. … That is up 36.6% from FY2025's 98,793 t-CO2e (total 103,065 t-CO2e) and 29.7% above FY2024's 104,064 t-CO2e (total 106,996 t-CO2e), so the figure reversed upward after falling between FY2024 and FY2025. Category 1 (purchased goods and services) still accounts for roughly 70–80%. The assured Scope 1 and 2 total of 4,437 t-CO2e is about 3.2% of group emissions, which leaves the part that grew outside the scope of assurance.
    as of 2026-08
  8. FY2026 energy consumption is now disclosed as well, at 16,251 MWh in total (electricity 12,287 MWh, city gas 2,904 MWh, gasoline 385 MWh, diesel 222 MWh, heavy fuel oil A 182 MWh, LPG 179 MWh, kerosene 91 MWh) against 10,190 MWh in FY2025, roughly 1.6x. … The company notes that from FY2026 it widened the energy types included in the calculation and revised some previously reported electricity data, so the year-on-year gap reflects both higher consumption and a wider measurement boundary. Water use for the year was 3,119 cubic metres, waste 73.3 tonnes (51.1 tonnes recycled) and the recycling rate 69.7%.[105][119]
    as of 2026-08
  9. Because the compute load behind company-wide AI adoption, cloud procurement and always-on betting and live-ops platforms flows mainly into that category, the environmental effect of scaling AI shows up in the supply chain rather than under the company's direct control.[102] as of 2026-08

Emissions are rising in intensity as well as in absolute terms. Dividing FY2026 total emissions of 139,420 t-CO2e by the same year's consolidated revenue of ¥171.369B gives about 81.4 t-CO2e per ¥100M of revenue (about 814 t per ¥1B), up roughly 22% from about 66.6 t in FY2025 (103,065 t-CO2e on ¥154.8B). … Per employee the figure also rises, from about 60.0 t in FY2025 (103,065 over 1,717 staff) to about 65.9 t in FY2026 (139,420 over 2,116).[105][37][41] Consolidating PointsBet did not dilute emissions in proportion to revenue or headcount; it raised them per unit of revenue. The increase sits mainly in Scope 3, led by category 1, which the third-party assurance obtained on 18 August 2026 does not cover.[119] These ratios are calculated by dividing disclosed figures and are not intensity metrics the company itself computes or publishes.

  2. The always-on infrastructure of betting (PointsBet), games (Monster Strike) and the family app (FamilyAlbum), plus electricity at physical venues at home and abroad, drives the GHG footprint. As acquisitions widen the footprint overseas, expanding the measurement and disclosure scope — including Scope-3 supply-chain emissions — is a medium-term task for TCFD-aligned reporting.[9][8] Company-wide AI adoption of 99% and the full-scale use of generative AI in video production also compress production hours and related costs while adding compute consumption for inference and generation; MIXI discloses the cost saving (about ¥1B a year) but has not broken out the energy use or emissions attached to AI use.[44][45] as of 2026-07 · superseded by ↓
